Well, since he really only said the gun was 'nice' and that the guy should customize it, we'll leave it at that.  I mean, it IS a nice gun.  It's a Browning Ultra Power, stock.  Not the BEST gun or the fanciest.  But it's nice.

So a standard Judge Intentions to see that Div really has no real idea if it's a nice gun or not.

But he passes himself off as at least a hobbyist level of authority.
That's just like... your opinion, man.

Pennies does a matrix search of everything Cavilard Research Center.  Computer 5 + INT 2 + Hot SIM 2 - Local Grid 2

Matrix search: 7d6t5 1

Matrix Search 2: 6d6t5 2

Matrix Search 3: 5d6t5 2

5 hits after three periods.  She is running Browse, so the Matrix Search periods are only half as long as normal.

Alright, well lets see what Ice can dig up... surprisingly same number of dice, she'll tackle the good Dr.

Matrix Search, Mr. Gerald Watkins - Computers 3 + Intuition 4 + Hot-Sim  2 - Local Grid 2
Matrix Search: 7d6t5 3 Hits
Matrix Search 2: 6d6t5 3 Hits
Matrix Search 3: 5d6t5 1 Hit

Total of 7 hits after three periods.

Looks like we're waiting on some PC interaction here before moving forward.  No post from me tomorrow (Thanksgiving) but I'll be active over the weekend!  Happy thanksgiving all!

Looks like a conversation is going on between Pennies and Ice.  No one else has posted, don't really have a place to move the story without direction from you guys!  Gonna give it another day and see where we are at.

Pennies does hack on the fly on a camera.  Computer 5 + Hacking 6 + Hot Sim 2 - Grid 2 = 11d6

I do not have access to Orokos right now.  Can someone roll the dice for me. please?

I'm going to change that roll into a Matrix Perception roll.

MM, the first thing you'll want to do before hacking anything is get a good look at what's going on.  This is a Matrix Perception Test (which Pennies isn't particularly good at).  So I am turning that roll into a series of Matrix Perception Tests.  Intuition (2) + Computer (5) + Hot SIM (2) - Grid (2) - Noise from Distance (3) - Noise from Sprawl 2 = 2, so 5 separate tests.  Happily, you don't glitch  ::)

As you are trying to get a look at the Cameras, you'll need to access the host they are on, so that's what you are looking for.  The Host is not 'Running Silent', so you find it pretty easily.  Now you want to get an idea of how beefy the host is.  Each Net Hit on a Matrix Perception Test will give you a question to ask.

What is the Host Rating?
What is the Firewall (Data Processing/Attack/Sleaze) attribute of the Host?
What devices are slaved to the Host?
What grid is it on?

And any other questions you might think of.  Of course, this is an opposed test and, sadly, it successfully opposed all of your rolls.  The good thing is that this was just a look, so no alarms or anything are set off.  Anything that uses your Sleaze or Attack attribute on your deck (Hacking actions, mostly) will set of alarms if you fail.  This is why you want to get an idea of how strong the Host is, so you can better prepare yourself, since failing a Hack action could hose your run from the get go.

Also, to mitigate those minuses:

Hop Grids (A simple hack on the Fly action to hop the grid.  It will start your GOD score, but you'll lose the -2 there)
GET CLOSER!
Start up your Signal Scrub program (-2 to the noise)

As it stands those negatives go against any test you attempt against the host, so you'd be -5 total to hack it, too.
That's just like... your opinion, man.

Wow!  So much information to being a hacker.  This is going to be a steep learning curve, so thanks for being patient and trying to explain.  So, as I understand it, there will be a -2 for being in the city for every roll?  And additional - mods for distance.  That will indeed make it tough for someone with a low INT to do any searches.  Hmmmmm.  OK.  This will make some good RP.  Thanks.

Pennies has strong suite of programs from her deck.  The noise from being in the city is due to all of the virtual spam, ads, other signals, just all of the CRAP that is floating around out there.

The Signal Scrub program mitigates 2 points of Noise.  Think of it as your spam blocker.  'Signal Scrub' being the metaname for the program, but could definitely be branded or whatever.

Also, different parts of the city might have more or less noise.  Downtown is particularly bad.  Your present location in a motel in Bellevue is moderate.  As you get to the edge of the more popular regions, it could drop a bit.

The main idea in Edition 4 and 5 was they wanted Hackers to get down and dirty with the team, so the distance noise modifiers encourage that, instead of doing all the hacking from a safe distance every time.

LOL! (Beta knows what I'm talking about...)

ANYWAY:

So, MM, the programs are listed under her device, which is a Renraku Tsurugi.  These programs are named by function, so you are free to brand and name them whatever you want in the narrative.

So, the Renraku Tsurugi has a Device Rating of 3 and an 'Array' of 6 5 5 3 .  Finally it can run up to 3 programs simultaneously.  So all of the programs are on the deck, but only 3 can be active. Sort of like how you have a bunch of programs on your computer but if you try to run too many of them it bogs your machine down and eventually crashes it.

The programs are found on page 245 of the Core Book.  They basically give you little mini-bonuses here and there.

The Array are the scores you can assign to your ASDF or Attack, Sleaze, Data Processing, and Firewall.  Basically Offense, Sneakiness, Miscellaneous, and Defense.

For a free action, you can swap two of those scores or swap one program for another.
That's just like... your opinion, man.

OK.  I have been cramming on hacker rules.  I have some questions:

Would the cameras just be devices or a host?  I am not sure I understand why they would be a host or why I would need to get the host ratings?

The attributes of my deck essentially are limits, right?  So programs that increase the attributes only really increase the limit.  Except that the firewall attribute is actually a dice pool modifier when attacked.

There is a mention that my starting grid is determined by my lifestyle, but that upgrades can be purchased.  What is the cost to upgrade to the local grid?

Virtual Machine would allow me to run 5 programs or 4, with the VM software taking up one of the original slots?

The cameras are devices that would be on a Host to store (and possibly analyze) recorded data. Any device that is linked to a Host uses the Host's attributes to defend against Wireless hacking attempts. If you can manage a direct connection, you can circumvent this.

This is more or less correct. However, Sleeze is also used to defend against your persona and icons being spotted while Running Silent, also Data Processing is used to determined VR Initiative.

That's something covered by Advanced Lifestyle rules in Run Faster (P222)... so I'll leave that for our GM to sort out.

Virtual Machine allows for one extra program, it does take up a program slot on your cyberdeck.
