Is there an updated timeline for 5e? I can only find the third edition timeline, so my group is missing 15 years...

Sixth World Almanac from 4th ed has the timeline up to 2072 or so, IIRC. Not all the way to present, but close.
Greataxe - Apply directly to source of problem, repeat as needed.

Best guess?
Page count. The CRB is already a pretty thick book. To throw in an update of all the 'wacky' that had happened, even just from '72 to '75 would have added another 5 to 8 pages.

And that would also cut into the next almenac book as well.
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Remember: You can't fix Stupid. But you can beat on it with a 2x4 until it smartens up! Or dies.

The 5e core seems to assume that anyone reading it has played SR before and understands the setting history. This is evident by what I and many others consider to be a pretty awful setting and history chapter that doesn't do near enough to give new players insight as to how the world is the way it is. I think this is one of the biggest mistakes a game can make, assuming most or all consumers have existing knowledge. It can alienate a lot of people, and it's never good business practice for newcomers to need to buy basically useless books from a dead edition just to grok the setting.

I cannot think of a valid reason for the important and detailed history of Shadowrun to have been presented this way for a brand new edition, or needing to seek out a corollary product like Storm Front to understand the narrative changes between the default setting times of 4th and 5th (which was, what, about 5 years difference)?

TL;DR: they didn't put one in the core book because 5e is plagued with bad decisions
Playability > verisimilitude.

Condensed timeline of significant campaign events, for easy reference:

1999: FastJack born.
2009: The Lone Eagle Incident. Terrorists in the Sovereign American Indian Movement (SAIM) capture a missile silo and launch a nuclear missile at Russia, trying to provoke a retaliatory strike against the United States. The attempt fails, but the incident sparks massive anti-Amerindian sentiment, followed by reactionary legislation. Amerindians are gathered into concentration camps.
2010: VITAS. A lethal pandemic kills off 25% of the world population. Segregated Amerindian populations are mostly spared, ironically.
2011: The Awakening. The end of the Fifth World and the beginning of the Sixth. Magic returns. One baby in ten is born elf or dwarf.
2011 to 2017: The Indian War. Armed with increasingly powerful magic, American Indians fight a guerilla war against the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
2017 Aug 17: Great Ghost Dance. Daniel Howling Coyote leads the Great Ghost Dance, trigging volcanic eruptions across the Pacific Northwest and forcing the U.S. and Canadian governments to the negotiating table.
2018 Apr: The Treaty of Denver. The formation of the Native American Nations (NAN) in western North America.
2020 Nov 16: Emerald City. Formation of the Seattle Metroplex.
2021 Apr 30: Goblinization Day. 10% of the world population spontaneously transform into orks and trolls.
2024: Imago Dei. Pope John XXV defends the Awakened.
2029: The Crash. A computer virus destroys the worldwide information infrastructure, destroying whole economies.
2030 Oct 15: Union Day. The formation of the United Canadian and American States (UCAS).
2034 Nov 10: Secession Day. The Confederation of American States (CAS) leaves the UCAS.
2039 Feb 27: The Night of Rage. Worldwide anti-metahuman riots.
2055 Aug 22: Bug City. Insect spirits infest downtown Chicago; the UCAS Army surrounds the city and establishes the Chicago Containment Zone. The quarantine lasts two-and-a-half years, and leaves Chicago a feral city.
2057 Aug: President Dunkelzahn. A great dragon is elected president of the UCAS, but is (apparently) assassinated hours after his inauguration.
2058 Jan 01: Mob War. The "New Year's Hit" on Don James O'Malley triggers a mob war in the Seattle underworld.
2058 Feb 22: Operation Extermination. Ares Macrotechnology successfully cleans up Bug City using a bioweapon (FAB Strain III) that attacks astral forms. The Chicago quarantine is lifted.
2059 Dec 19: Shutdown. A rogue artificial intelligence (Deus) takes over the Renraku Arcology in Seattle. The arcology remains sealed for over a year.
2061: The Year of the Comet. Halley's Comet triggers magical phenomena worldwide.
2061: SURGE. People spontaneously express Awakened traits.
2061: Ghostwalker. A new great dragon appears and takes control of Denver.
2063 May 01: NEEC. The New European Economic Community (NEEC) is officially inaugurated.
2064 Nov 02: Crash 2.0. An apocalyptic terrorist organization (Winternight) causes a worldwide Matrix failure.
2069 Mar 08: The Twins. Two simultaneous earthquakes on the San Andreas fault and San Pedro shelf, centered around Los Angeles, reshape the California coast.
2070 Aug 08: Artificial Intelligence. An AI named Sojourner takes control of Aztechnology's Tlaloc space station and threatens to drop bioweapons on Earth if imprisoned AIs and technomancers aren't released. Another AI, Pulsar, negotiates a compromise.
2074 Oct 03: Aztlan vs. Sirrurg. Aztlan Special Forces engage the Great Dragon Sirrurg near Roswell. Sirrurg is nearly killed, but manages to escape.
2074 Nov 04: Proposition 23 Passes. The Ork Underground becoms an official district of the Seattle Metroplex.
2074 Nov 06: Alamais vs. Lofwyr. The Great Dragon Alamais is killed in GeMiTo by Lofwyr, allied with Lung and Arleesh.
2076 Jun 05: Boston Lockdown. A massive outbreak of cognitive fragmentation disorder (CFD) places the city of Boston under quarantine.
2077 Mar 15: Megacorporate Revision. The Corporate Court announces a five-year review of AA extraterritoriality.

Apparently I missed some books in 5th edition. I've only got a timeline I know down to 2075, not 76 or 77.
