"Yeah, I was meaning to find a reliable mage - really lucky for me to run into you. You see, I came recently into possession of a very interesting focus." Isaint pulled a thin metal cord from around his neck. At it's end dangled a blue feather encased in some kind of yellowish crystal.
"It's a spellfocus for adepts like me. It allows me to levitate stuff - myself included. I was able to emulate the necessary skill through another of my talents, but that is only a temporary solution.
I need you to show me how to manipulate mana precise enough on my own. I mean, you are the best telekinet I know.

Oh, by the way, how is Cora? I thought you had to promise her after last time not to go into the Dark again."

Just as he had spoken the last sentence Isaint realized that he must have put his foot down to the ankle in his mouth.
"Rick, I..."

Robyn directs Halfpint to the alleyway behind the store that leads to the loading bay door and sends a text to have someone open the door for them.  The door slide up on its rails as the van pulls up and Robyn guides the rigger into the shop.  He sees bookshelves full of real, bound books and people wandering and some even sitting in some of the overstuffed leather chairs scattered about.  A woman is waiting to meet her and is introduced as the shop manager, Sarah.  Sarah welcomes Halfpint and scolds Al fro not keeping his mistress dry.  The Hell Hound looks at her and dips his head as if to say he is sorry.  Robyn points off and makes some strange clicking noises and Al walks over to a huge throw pillow near a glassed in room.  She then leads the way through the shop where the smell of leather combines with cigar smoke and quiet customers look through the shelves.  She walks past a wrought iron circular stairway leading up and down to a lift, Sarah walking with her and talking numbers.  Robyn tells her that she will be gone for a few days and the woman nods as she pushes the button for the lift and bids both of them farewell.

Once in the lift, Robyn says, "This should not take long.  I have already messaged Stephanie and some things should already be packed and ready."

The lift door opens to a short hallway that leads to a door that is already open and waiting.  As the two enter the room beyond the door, a woman approaches.  Robyn shrugs out of the long-tailed jacket and hands it to the woman who she introduces as Stephanie.  Stephanie places the jacket over a chair as Robyn walks through to her bedroom chattering the entire time with her maid about what is packed to go.  Before she disappears into the room, she turns to the halfer.  "Please make yourself at home, Halfpint."  The maid soon returns carrying the wet clothes and asks Halfpint if she can get him anything to drink.  A few minutes later Robyn appears, dressed in a set of cargo pants and a shirt. She nods to Halfpint and says, "Almost done.  Just have to pack a few things and I will be ready to go.  Thank you for waiting."  She disappears again, returning in a minute with a suitcase and a cello case.

At the door to the apartment, Robyn turns and gives cheek busses to the other woman before saying something in French, to which Stephanie responds with a slight blush and a smile.  Turning back to the door, Robyn leads Halfpint back to the lift and down, heading through the shop to the loading bay, collecting Al along the way.  Two young men have moved a large Mule drone into position at the bay and are just about finished loading several cases onto it.  Robyn stops and talks to the men by name, introducing them to her companion.  She turns to Halfpint, saying, "Halfpint, meet Igor.  He is my longtime friend and companion.  And here are the marks you need to control him."  A non-verbal command is given and Igor rises and steps into the waiting van, causing it to settle just a bit.  The young men assist Halfpint in loading Robyn's last cases and watch as the rigger maneuvers the drone to just where he wants it.  Robyn turns to Sarah, who has made a quiet appearance.  The two talk shop for a minute then Sarah turns to kneel close to Al so as to bring her eyes to his level.  "And you make sure she comes back, or no more of these for you."  She holds out a hand and offers the dog a large Meaty Stick, which Al ignores while looking up at Robyn.  She laughs and gives Al permission to take the snack, "You are spoiling him.  I need a fierce guardian, not a puppy."

"Yeah, as if that will happen."  The two stand and embrace before Robyn turns to Halfpint and walks over to climb into the van with Al as the bay door slides down.

Relieved to see that Robyn got a ride after all, real-Al pulled the sports sedan deftly into the West End traffic flow. He didn't know this person Rory or the man's workshops, but his mapsoft did and in an instant the route was displayed faintly across his windshield.

"So I'll be honest, mi betusked amigo, was a little surprised ta see ya tonight. Ya din't seem too pleased with this line o' work when last we spoke. I'll confess it took ol' Al some gittin' accustomed to as well, but it has been growin' on me. Leaves me lots of leisure time ta practice my magic, watch anime, an' work on cars. Plus I noticed early on the just about ever' single one o' the women in this here biz is smokin' hot. Case in point this job here. And the last one - though all either went missin' or crazy. So whatcha been up to the past month?"

Jackhammer sat in the car and frowned silently. Al seemed to think that the family was still alive. It was an odd thought. But then, Al could be crazy or lying. Evidence seemed to favor that pretty heavily. But if it was true, that probably meant they were safe. He'd have to ask Isaint about that later, but only when they were sure to be alone. And with things being the way they were, that would have to be a very special set of circumstances.

Before he could think of anything to really say, or decide if he wanted to talk at all, Al continued on. When he mentioned women, Jackhammer chuckled slightly. "Heh, yeah. We had some of that in the fashion industry, but not that I really got to work closely with. Well... he trailed off as he thought of some of the interesting arrangements that had come from his old job. Then he remembered that he didn't have that job anymore. Things were pretty heavy lately, it seemed. It was hard to believe he was officially unemployed, but then again, he was never exactly "officially" employed either, given the circumstance.

He tried to focus on the here & now, and continued his response. "Money's good. This stuff is going to happen with or without me, so I figure I might as well get in on it." He lied. He didn't really want anyone to know that he wasn't sold on the whole bit except for keeping Robyn out of trouble. Maybe he had a soft spot for blind girls or something, or maybe she reminded him of an old crush, or maybe he just needed an excuse to go back below and finish unfinished business, but whatever the case, he felt the need to watch this girl's back. And given the circumstances, he didn't feel like sharing all that with Al.

Deckard's jaws clenched at the mention of his wife. It had been two month since she passed away, but it still hurt to talk about her. He gave ISaint a forced smile, the man couldn't have know, and it was genuine and nice of him to ask. Maybe that was what friends were.

He continued ISaint's sentence: ... couldn't have known. But I praise your intuition on this matter.  She... she got very sick. Some sort of virus, I don't even know exactly what it was. She passed away two months ago. Deckard paused for a second, trying to get a hold of his bursting emotions.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you what is it to lose loved ones. You've had your own share, right?
He took a deep breath.
All the hospitalization care put me in a tight financial spot, had to borrow some money to some shady individuals. So I couldn't refuse high paid job like this one. Plus, you know me, I kind of like the thrill of danger. Wasn't expected you to see you at the meet. But I'm glad. It's good to have people you already trust when forming a new team.

He brought the attention and discussion back to less personal matter as he held carefully the medallion hanging on ISaint's neck.
Nice stuff you got there. Though after seeing Iris' wand, it makes us look like amateur magician. He too reached under his cozy turtle neck and pulled out what first appeared as dogtags that most military personal wore. Upon closer inspection though, the tags were engraved with some strange runes themselves covered by some glossy blue liquids that seemed to move through the runes as the necklace was moved. That's my Focus.  Helps channeling the Mana around.
SpellFocus for adept... that's new, pretty weird.... unexpectable... I like it.
So how exactly can I help? You want me to teach you how to be a magician? you know my views on Magic are rather chaotic.... yeah, teaching spellcasting to an physical adept, sounds pretty chaotic to me...

Don't know how this will span out, but I want to try binding a elemental for our little trip down Below, it may be quite useful. That's gonna tell me quite a while. What do you think?

"Cryin' out loud, amigo, don't know if that's pragmatic, existential, or jist plain nihilistic."

They drove in silence through the rain, then, until the cluster of storage spaces hove into view, and then they pulled into the workspace Isaint had directed them to as a rally point. It looked like they were the first one's there. Al used the code they'd been given, sent the door up, and parked inside. As the two runners emerged from the car, Al spoke as though their conversation had never paused. "Fashion industry, huh? You some kinda male model or somethin'?"

Isaint grimly nodded at Rick's words: "Yes I do. You do have my sincerest condolences. It's always the blow you didn't see coming."
Recognizing the topic change, he continued: "Mana levels are rising steadily or so I am told. We haven't nearly reached the limit of what is possible.
And I agree: Having someone at your back you can trust will make this a lot easier. On that account I'll vouch for Al Guthrie. He might seem a bit funny, but he is a genuine good guy. Expect him to surprise you.

About that summoning: If you can do it within 16 hours it's a good idea. You can use the storage unit until the others arrive.
As for magic: All I need are some pointers - just the basics how to form mana, collect and release it. I'm sure it won't take longer than a few hours with a teacher like you."

Deckard just needs one hit on an instruction test to reduce Isaints learning time from 1 day to 0 days
A simple CHA -1 test will do.

Jackhammer actually laughed out loud, genuinely, for the first time since he'd jogged over to the math building to provide ranged support. It was a strange feeling, foreign, like somebody else using his voice. He rested his arm on the car, shifting it on its shocks slightly, and let go a heavy sigh. "No, not--" He waved his hand dismissively. "I'm not a model. I'm a bodyguard." He cocked his head slightly as he began to step away from the vehicle. "Was a bodyguard. I worked for Madezyne, an exotic armored clothing designer. One of her lines was picked up by a big corp a few years back, and she's been riding that train ever since. She doesn't get much actual business anymore, but her runway productions always draw enough of a crowd. I think she's crazy, but she paid well enough. At least she used to, back before she switched most of her security to elves." Jackhammer spat.

Robyn rides comfortably with the rigger for the trip to the meet.  Her left hand idly scratches the head of the huge hound lying near the center console.  Her thoughts are mostly on how she is going to slip the band's info into the London clubs, but a part is on Al Guthrie.  Shaking her head, she pushes that issue to a new folder in her compartmentalized brain that she labels "Talk To Al Soon" and concentrates on the mission requirements.  Before too long, Halfpint has the van pulling up to the building and he is entering the code to raise the large garage door.  Robyn sees that they are not the first to arrive and recognizes Al's auto.

The two jump out of the van, followed by the Hell Hound, and go open the rear doors.  Robyn watches as the halfer expertly maneuvers Igor out of the van and over to one side before going in and getting her cello case and suitcase.  Stepping out, she follows Halfpint and Igor  and stows her cases when the drone stops.  Her sensors have already determined where Al and Jackhammer are standing and watching and she goes over to them, snagging a chair and leaning back in it.  "Hey.  Glad to see we're not last.  I had a short comm from Iris.  She is making connections for us Below and will be with us in a few hours if all goes well. I told her to have her pipes warmed up as she is now Star Blazer, our lead singer.  Any changes in the plan yet?  I have us playing a number of grunge clubs between Berlin and here over the past few months.  I will set up a post for everyone detailing where we've played and some of the people we have met.  Of course, with a band like ours, any lapses can be explained by drugs or booze."

Robyn pulls a pack of Lucky Strikes and a Zippo from a pocket of her gear and removes a cigarette, lighting it and taking a few drags.  She slides the pack to the others and motions to it.  "Help yourself if you smoke."

Al? you're not talking about blind girl's HellHound, right? Just joking. Yeah, the old man looks like he's been through a lot. And that means experience, which is key for survival in our field. I'll head home for a bit, that's where my lodge is, I'll need it to make the initial bonding. I'll rest a bit then will come to that storage place and we'll see about that Spellcasting thing.
So you want me to teach you how channel the Mana to cast a spell that has its formulae held inside your focus... interesting... I can show you, kind of like my apprentice...
A big grin showed on his face... you're gonna have to call me Master.

Deckard kept his big smile, pleased with his opportunist thinking.

When the Bulldog pulled in Al was just finishing on his commlink, finalizing express deliveries for various resins and liquid polymers he'd need to chemically seal any compartments he might be making. Between what he'd brought and what he'd seen around the space they were in, everything else they'd need was here.

He took a cigarette shyly when offered one, holding it out for a light. Waited a polite minute or so, then stood. "Alrighty, I need you fer a tick," he said, indicating Alyce with a pointed finger. "Excuse us, gentlemen. Jist be a few minutes."

Then he strode over to his car, not looking back until he'd opened up the passenger door. "He can stay out here," he said regarding her beast as he helped her in. He slammed her door then walked around and dropped himself into the driver's seat.

He spoke to the windshield. "Well ya done had yer say, an' I reckon I heard it. I ain't got no skill fer that kinda talk, an' if I did there'd be a helluva lot ta spit out. Been thinkin' of all the things I wanna say fer the last hour, an' some of it fer the past eight years. Hunnerds o' things ta say. But when I put it all together an' boil 'er down, it comes ta this."

He turned and addressed her directly. There was a surety in the voice that had always been full of indecision back when she'd known him. "Reckon the only way we know each other was a few off the deep-end weeks in one o' the darkest backwaters o' Southeast Asia. Eight years ago. That ain't no normal way ta git ta know someone. But seems to've left an impression on ya. It sure as hell did on me. But that's a lotta time an' space an' change ta jist pick up where we left off." He licked his lips, confidence now shifting to nervousness. "So I'm wonderin' what yer doin' fer dinner the first night after we do this job. We's workin' now, but I reckon I'd like ta take ya out after. Dinner, show, all o' that. Not old friends catchin' up. A date. Like two people do - or used ta do - when they's innerested in each other an' wanna find out more. Reckon I'd like ta come callin' on ya, Alyce Krait. Like ta court ya proper. If you're amenable ta that, we can settle it right now an' git our minds back on stayin' alive. Cuz I don't need ta tell ya things git awful nasty down where we's goin', House o' Grayskull face tat or not."

Robyn lets Al take her arm and escort her to the car.  She makes a motion with her hand when the Hell Hound raise its head in interest and the huge beast goes back to a resting position.  Robyn climbs into the car and waits for Al to get in and start talking.  Halfway through his words, she puts her head against the back of the seat and starts crying.  She makes no move to wipe the tears away as she listens to him.  When he is finished she keeps her face pointed at the windshield.  "I would like that, Al.  A lot."  She reaches out a hand to touch his arm.  "I would like to know one thing, though.  Why?  Why did you not call me?  Ever.  Eight years, Al.  I have no idea how long you have been in London, but still you did not call.  I do not understand."

Isaint showed him a loopsided grin. "I'll call you master, allright. Master-Blaster and Lord oft the noisy Winds shall be your official title..."

It took Isaint only an hour and a half to really learn the trick. Deckard wasn't a trained teacher, but he was patient and concentrated in bis attempt, so it worked out in the end.

When Isaint arrived at the storage, he cassually carried a large box full oft instruments with one hand, albeit quite slowly.

"Geez Louise, woman, ya think that might be one o' the hunnerd things we don't have time ta git into right now? They ain't no simple answer ta that." But his bluster masked a deep regret slicing through his heart. He'd always missed her, but he'd assumed that she'd eventually just forget about him. The thought of her missing him the way he had her for eight long years, and that it was on him...there it was, just one more reason this would never work.

"Listen, whatever the what for, I'm sorry. That ain't much, but ain't none o' my reasons good enough to make it okay, so fer now that's what I got. I reckon it's a helluva lot ta fergive, an' never o' thought ya would, 'cept fer the things ya said earlier."

She didn't move, and he sensed her dissatisfaction with his non-answer.

"I ain't the same guy ya knew back then. Some things, maybe ain't no atonin' for."

Alyce keeps her face straight ahead and talks softly, tears flowing unchecked down her cheeks.  "We are professionals, Al.  We can keep a lid on this for the expedition, just like we did in Cambodia.  And, Al, we all change.  Neither of is the same person we were eight years ago.  But there is part of me that has never changed and will never change.  I have never stopped loving you.  It is like I said back in Cambodia; I told you then that I had already made up my mind that I wanted to live the rest of our lives together.  I was only waiting for you to get to that point, too.  It is still that way.  I loved you then.  I still love you.  I will always love you, no matter what you do or how far you run from me.  And if you do not stay when this is done, then at least you can have that bit of knowledge to keep you warm at night.  There is a person in this world that loves you more than life itself.  I hope that you at least remember that, wherever you are."
