Evening Chummers,

After reading Data Trails, i decided to see if it would be possible to create a "deck" using the modification rules, I'm not unhappy.
To qualify, a deck must 1. Be able to gain unauthorized access to systems.  2.) Be able to fight against enemy Deckers.

The concept:
1.) Buy a Fairlight Caliburn w/ hotsim <8350 nuyen>
2.) Mod: Add Sleeze (14 parts, buy 15) <3,000 nyuen>
3.) Upgrade Sleeze x5 (40 parts) < 8000 nyuen> // Hitboxes go from 11->1
4) Mod: add Hardening Moduel<1500 nyuen.>  // gives 5 boxes because its a lot better than 1.

Stats: "Fairlight Avalon"
ASDF : 0/6/7/7 [Locked]
HItboxes: 6 [5 from Hardening]
Cost: 20,850 Nyuen.

If you have to take something down? Mark. Format. Reboot
It certainly has its flaws, but the cost/benefit seems to be enough to make it vialbe to me.
Thoughts?

Page 66 of Data Trails Unless otherwise noted, a device can only have one modification.

so Add a Matrix Attribute does state The Increase a Matrix Attribute modification can later be added to this modification

but you cant Add a Module on top of that

The lack of an attack attribute means it's gimped as soon as it comes accross an ecrypted file or folder.

'Increase a matrix attribute' is listed as something you can take alongside 'add a matrix attribute', but doesn't state you can take it 5 times.

IIRC you can increase twice?  AFB so I'm not able to confirm.

And as stated, you can't add a second mod.

There are lots of configurations available for Commlinks that can make a crappy hacking tool on a budget.  The one that starts with a decent Sleaze rating can do well too.  Throw on an Attack stat dongle and a Program Carrier Mod with Smoke and Mirrors, *poof* you're a hacker.  But the low end 50k and 100k decks are also viable for most deckers.

Add a Matrix Attribute: ... The Increase a Matrix Attribute modification can later be added to this modification.
Neither Add nor Increase necessarily state that it can only be increased once. So (as with all their products lately) it's up to GM's interpretation.

However, Add / Increase Attribute is a Modification, and Add a Module is a completely separate Modification. And even if the Add / Increase say they can be stacked,  you cannot Add a Module in addition, so no Hardening. Which means your Sleaze 6 Commlink has 1 box of Matrix damage before it's bricked. Gud jorb L33T haxor, if anyone looks in your direction, you're toast. =)
The Matrix is everywhere. It is all around us. Even now, in this very room. You can see it when you look out your window or when you turn on your television. You can feel it when you go to work…when you go to church…when you pay your taxes.

The increasing part is definitely up to GM interpretation not that its been pointed out. Doesn't say either way.  a Gm could easily just say you can only do it once.

Pg 64 Cyberdeck Modules : Prefabricated hardware you may install to add capability.
Pg 65 Odd Mods: Device modifications: Altering your baseline hardware with spare parts, to change its capability.
Nothing i've found, aside from the name, actually indicates these are mutually exclusive or related.

The limitation "Only one device modification" is listed in a section named, Device Modifications, implying that it only applies to items from its own section.

If you named them "Cyberdeck Dongles" there would be nothing linking the two.

The link between them is that Hardening isn't a Commlink dongle, it's a Cyberdeck module. And the only way to add that onto a Commlink is with another Modification. And aside from the Add / Increase, you can't have additional Modifications to the same device. Which means either you Add / Increase Sleaze, OR you plug in Hardening. Can't do both.

Data Trails P 66
"Increase a Matrix Attribute: You can increase a single Matrix attribute by one point..."

So, once.  I was thinking 2, because net you can go from 0 to 2.  My bad.

See also, Evotech Himitsu with an Attack Dongle a Program Carrier Mod (Smoke and Mirrors, and ?Toolbox?) and a small mountain of Edge.  Good to go.
