I observe the second reminder carefully, turning it over in my mind. I don't want to do it, it seems a waste of time pretending to have power rather then actually acquiring it, but the fact that I already have an in on a niche market will prove useful, especially if I can train Li Sheng or some of her girls to take over the Dom business. It's within the realm of their experience, and perhaps can even provide an outlet of empowerment.

The other note is more important. I must make a good and lasting impression with Tanya, thus creating wiggle room with Ni Ni. If Tanya likes me she will encourage her partner to keep me in favor, and if a true friendship occurs I might even sway Tanya into holding the leash of the women who holds mine. A perfect circle of mutually assured destruction.

"I will have to give my image more thought. 'The women with a scarf over her face' hardly strikes awe into the hearts of mortals. But back to the larger targets, I understand that Ping and Sing are very small fish, but who are the large ones, Triad and independent? Of course I don't need to know all of them now, but having knowledge of those I might see around seems more then prudent."

"Yes, small fish.  There are bigger ones, of course, but none in this small part of the Barrens.  Soon, you will be the porn queen of the neighborhood.  At this time, my advice is to stay small and expand slowly.  Too much too fast will garner notice from the bigger and then the even bigger fish before you want it.  Just my thinking, mind you.  Right now, you will have people wondering who you are and that is a good thing.  Expose as little as you can, but enough to keep them wondering.  A criminal empire is not built in a day."

The two Orks come back down the stairs and emerge, one carrying the body of Ping over a shoulder.  The lead one nods at Sian as they pass, but neither says a word to anyone as they disappear into the darkness.  Sian looks at you.  "Well, that takes care of poor Ping.  Not sure if a man of his caliber will rest in peace.  So do you wish to head to the club?  We can set your man up where he can best help you then wait."

"Indeed, lets go. I'm interested to see this place, and have some other work I can take care of while we wait." and we set off towards the club.

The work I'm planning is fairly extensive, and once the building is clear I'll find a control room or office and go astral to scout the surrounding area. I want to know the mana of the neighborhood, where are the laylines, where are the pools of misery and the splinters of hope and the forests of conflict. Are there any accented areas, toxic or corrupt, that I should be aware of?

The walk to the derelict club does not take long.  It was never a fine place, but it is now completely abandoned, except for squatters who find a bit of shelter in its ruined rooms and the occasional street prostitute who uses it as a place to conduct her business.  As you enter the building, you spy a young teenaged girl on her knees in front of an older man, her head bobbing back and forth.  They pay no attention as the three of you move past them and head into the interior of the building.  Sian tells you that the girl will finish soon and should be no danger.  You do roust three squatters who are using the main room of the old bar as a place to sleep.  Sylvia slips off into the darkness at your command and takes up a position where she can observe the approach and the main room.

Sian watches your bodyguard leave and says, "Your guard is a strange man.  He seems competent and is a man of few words, but is he trustworthy?"

Your search of the astral in this area is depressing.  There is much misery and little hope.  Some of the pools of misery are deep and dark, indeed.  Coincidentally, there is a lay line that runs right under the club, but it is corrupted and soiled.  You do not see any signs of anything toxic, which might be a bit of a surprise, given the location.

I return to my body and shake off the discomfort. I look out over the dance floor from the deralict stage and somewhere in my heart I decide to renovate this building. For the time being I drop my scarf and glasses on the remnants of a plastic chair, the cleanest one I can find, and begin stepping slowing through Tai Chi Kata's, calming the turbulant sensations of being astral in such a place.

As I turn in a mock block I address Sians question "I trust my allies, and my bodygaurd knows enough about me to be considered far more then an employee. Unfortunetly, for the sake of all our security, the two off you are unlikely to become well acquainted outside of this violent business." A step and counter-punch lets me see Sian clearly "Trust that when bullets and blood begin to mix, my companions will exceed expectations. Beyond that, their business, as yours, is independent but united. Much like this country in the olden days, or so I've read."

Sian nods.  "Will you want me to be present for this meeting?  People have already seen us together, but I might be nothing more than an escort you have hired to take me through the Barrens.  If I remain, there will be a link that is hard to deny.  Do you wish to preserve an illusion of being separate or is it time to show we are allied?"

"Be on hand for the time, in the wings as it were, if you see something we don't, step in and do what you do."

I head to the control room overlooking the stage and send for Sylvia to join me, then begin constructing an illusion of Mr Ping, as well as modifying the illusion of myself to include a localized shimmer and glowing eyes giving my 'double' an otherworldly appearance. Once I have both illusions conjured with enough strangth to fool most, I'll relax and talk to Sylvia. This may be a small fish, but that no excuse to be lazy.

Sian nods and leaves, taking her hounds with her.  Your bodyguard arrives after a couple of minutes and watches as you create your illusion.  She nods at the finished product.  "Well done partner.  You certainly have skills.  Would you like me to be Ping?  I could do it without the need for an illusion, even talk with his voice.  If Sing has someone awakened on his team, might he not notice something odd about your illusion of the man?"

She walks to the shattered window overlooking the stage and main room.  "I have had a nice time.  Very different from my normal evening's entertainment.  Your rather strange ally is certainly something, isn't she?  Not sure what to make of her yet, but she is far too mature in her thinking to be only fifteen, so I would think some magic is at work.  She carries herself like she knows things and seems very comfortable in her skin, which implies to me that she is confident and dangerous.  I urge you to be careful with her."

"Your concern flatters me sir, and I shall do business with her as carefully as anyone. As the the illusion, I have a few theories and would like your input. First, I present the two illusions on stage to draw out Mr Sing, this opening him to attack from behind by you and I. The second is that you play the part of Mr Ping, defeat sing in single combat, this winning his company, and give it all to Li Sheng, a bloodless transition of power. In either case, my unorthodox ally is in the wings should things spiral out of control. And you've seen a fraction of my power, the rest might well be displayed. Which do you like more?"

As I talk I write a message on my link and show it to her, suspicious that Sian might be listening in. Even if she were to astrally project and spy on us she would be unable to examine the message reading 'get to know Sian, learn all you can, pretend you are going behind my back'

Sylvia considers the choices you have presented and shakes her head.  "I think that the better of the two plans is for me to be Ping and then kill Sing and some of his followers.  I rather doubt that Sing will be honorable enough to engage in single combat, but will have a number of men with him.  If we leave some of them alive and get them to swear to Ping and then Li Shang, it will help your cause.  Besides, I had thought that part of the purpose was to make it bloody enough to convince any other supporters of Sing to not want to step forward.  Did I misunderstand that?"

"That would have an effect, naturally, and one the gangers Sing will bring along are families with. T Hat's why I want to change things up. If you, as Ping, defeat Sing and his thugs, with my subtle help, then claim you gained the strength to do so from a new alliance, which has given you the wisdom to see your own flaws, then the gangers will join us, not only out of fear, but out of the knowledge that they might become stronger and wiser then they believed possible. This plan hinges on a decent lights show, my concealment, and you being able to defeat a few gangers in nothing short of spectacular style. Do you think you can put on that sort of show for me?"

If I can get these gangers looking up, thinking they can become more, then I develop not a criminal business, but a following. Those who believe they are fighting for something  powerful will fight much harder then those just on to make a few Nuyen.

"In this plan, when do I stop being Ping?  You will want them loyal to Li Shang, not Ping.  She will soon have a rep for killing Ping, but how will you work that in?"

"Ping will disappear shortly after taking control of Sing's organization. The claim will be that he found spiritual enlightenment and has gone off the grid. If played correctly he would become a symbol of redemption to the people and-" I stop and look at Sylvia.

I am reminded of two important facts. One, that I do not have any of the power I did before I was arrested, if my  plans fail not a soul on earth will try to save me. Ni Ni would lose her partner in theft, but she replaced me once. Sylvia would lose future evenings of pleasure, but that cant be hard to come by for an international assassin. Sian would lose a potential cash source, but she hardly seems on the brink of poverty.

The second, and this one sits me down for a moment of consideration, is that I'm talking and thinking just like I did writing my thesis. Lay lines were a barely explored phenomenon and the few 'experts' held little clout since the power of lay lines seemed to be simply another freakish thing among thousands of others since the awakening. I hadn't known where the field was headed, or where I would end up in it, but I'd known that Laylines felt comfortable, the mobile mana giving strength. I had also been rash, impetuous and entirely too ambitious when I set out. Creating the Spire had proved a necessary step, proving my theories before anyone would invest iin them.

And here I was again, trying to jump straight to the end without building anything to start with.

"Forget it, I''m getting ahead of myself. The illusions will do, I'll have my version of Ping vanish before their eyes and later it will be said he ascended. For now, see about fixing these lights, then get in place for a fight. I'm sure you can find a gun somewhere around here, or somebody to take it from, since that's the kind of people I employ now."

I lean back against the wall close close my eyes, resolving to meditate and later draw up plans for the formation of a religious organization. Belief and hope will be the keys to purifying this desolate place. I can save them.

There is a moment of silence then Sylvia crouches down next to you and reaches out a hand to touch your arm.  It may be a man's hand, but it is still Sylvia and there is a bit of something extra, a jolt, in her touch.  "Are you alright?  Have I said something wrong?  I hope you know that you are not in this alone.  I am deeply interested in you and would see you succeed, but you have to talk.  Keeping everything bottled up is not good.  My question to you right now is how many of these people with Sing do you want to have survive this?

I look at her hard. I want to trust her, but I know any agent masters the art of using that desire to deceive and manipulate. What i realize I don't know for sure is that she won't let me read her mind, but this is no time to ask so much, so trust cannot be confirmed.

I can't feel sorry for myself. I don't have that luxury in the presence of killers. I need to be decisive.

My tone is even and Professional "Once we have them on the dance floor the Illusions will offer a deal. They will respond with insults, we will respond with threats, they will respond with violence. Once they've fired at the illusions, you kill Sing and any others I miss, while I will subdue the crowds. Perfect  result, Sing dies alone, likely result, three to eight casualties. Will you need a weapon?"
