Doesn't matter so much for the usual "here until sundown" summons but bound spirits can be around for months, allied spirits for decades.

But spirits are not metahumans or critters, and may not have the same requirements.  Anythingin the books over the years?  (I don't think there was anything on this in first or fifth, but I skipped over everything in-between, and haven't read novels)

I've read recently the spirit section of Street Grimoire, and I can not recall anything about that. Also I can not really recall a piece of fluff or a novel that would implie so.

Spirit are not creature of the flesh, so i would not except them to require sleep or rest, but one could argue that they need "rest time in Astral place" for instance. So if a player ask a bound spirit to patrol 7 days a week his safehouse, as a GM you could ask for 2 bound spirits rotating for instance...

Also, the nature of the spirit could play a part here - like a mankind spirit may actually need to sleep (as it is an anthropomorphic reprsentation of mankind who does sleep a lot). Or a fire spirt my need to fuel itself , so maybe it could stay on forever, but your player needs to have a bonfire nearby...

That is just idea, spirits are still (intentionly I think) rather vague in Shadowrun.

If you are looking to try and sneak past a bound spirit who is set to guard a doorway/hallway/etc by catching them napping I think you will be out of luck.

But it is a good question about what spririts do in their downtime, but SR does not really address it.
Do you believe in a greater WIRELESS, an Invisible(WiFi) All Seeing(detecting those connected- at least if within 100'), All Knowing(all online data) Presence that we can draw upon for Wisdom(downloads & updates), Strength (wifi boni) and Comfort (porn) or do you turn your back on it  (Go Offline)?

This is just a fluff question for us (so far).  Shaman in my game has an allied spirit, and so far the running gag is that when the Shaman goes to sleep, his ally borrows the racing bike and goes cruising the expressways (the ally goes by the handle 'Burning Rubber' and as you may guess from that, he likes going fast -- he was an engineer on the fastest road-train in the fleet, in a meta-plane inspired by the Fistful of Karma setting in Harlequin's Back, for those of you familiar with that -- and is always wanting to ride "the good bike").  Then the other day the player paused to ask "Wait, does Burning Rubber need to sleep?", and I looked blankly and made incoherent noises and finally said "I'll ask on the forums"

I love spirits. Just because we know so little about them.

Do they have a shared memory? Or just really big gossip hounds?
And they Self-Aware? Or is that just human projection?
Do they eat, sleep, produce waste? Or are they pure energy?

So many questions, so many counter arguments, so little proof :D
●●●●●

I can not recall a single story with a sleeping spirit. The closest we have is a ally spirit being on the metaplanes until called on by its mage. So was it sleeping on the metaplane? Or just involved in a card game?

Here's an other one for you, What do spirits eat??? (Aside from Karma and the faces of impudent mages that botch their summoning)
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Remember: You can't fix Stupid. But you can beat on it with a 2x4 until it smartens up! Or dies.

I'd say as a general rule, spirits don't need to sleep. Individual spirits might be capable of sleeping, and some might enjoy doing it, but I don't think they need to do it. It seems weird to expect a sapient ball of fire to feel tired or need to sleep.

At the end of the day I'd just go with whatever explanation you like best because as a wiseman once said, "It's Magic, I ain't got to explain shit."

That is very true MM.... on the physical plane, they don't comform to life as we know it.

But what about on the meta-planes where they are from?
I mean, we are not talking just empty space here, many have ecologies of their own. (Even if vastly different from what we are used to...)   how do spirits fit into these metaplanes ecologically?

Don't really expect an answer :P cause the only things that know for sure, aren't talking :D

This is true, we hear a lot of references to this......However we hear just as many references to spirits finding Things painful or unpleasant....etc, so if they can apparently feel pain, which is stated several times in the various book, then i guess they must have some sort of nervous system anyways or?

I know this is wordsplitting to a certain extent, but i do find it interesting that apprarently spirits can feel certain Things but not others.

Emotional pain is still pain, and does not require a nervous system.

Bound spirits do not - cannot - take time off.  Ally spirits should be allowed time to be off-duty.  Or else, you know, they think of your ally binding as being increasingly annoying, and may well start to not play nice with you any more.
