" Looking towards Wilco "You got anything heavy hitting items that might push the balance in our favor?". Wilco returns a shrewd grin "We'll I got the Doberman in back of the van"  it should be able to make a little it of noise.

Back to Ess Ess.

You left HammerJack near his appartment and headed back. His will broken. There should be no problem about the ransom by now.

On the route to the Sioux Sector you weren't checked. When you arrived at the border, the checkpoint was burning. A docwagon squad was tending one of the cops. Rest of them was busy putting out the fire. Whoever was alive on the both side of the border and got some tricky stuff to smuggle, was right now making a run for it, before the order will be restored.

You've squized your van among other cars, and without further hickup arrived at the park and near the Cats safehouse.

Located at the eastern end of E 112th Ave, DIY Storage and Lodging is one part coffin motel, one part self-storage and five parts rundown. The three story building has an obvious lean to the southern side where pre-fab walls have given way and begun to crumble.

At the front desk is a weasel-faced elf, literally, down to the prolonged nose and sharp teeth. The cred reader and hand pad look to be the newest items in here, both purchased second hand. Behind the counter is a late 20th century cash register with drawer and mounted crookedly on the wall is a deliboard listing of services and prices.

If you're interested all rooms come standard with air from the streets outside. If you want water, power, or access to the archaic network it’ll be extra. No room service, no house keeping.

If it wasn’t for the weasel behind the counter, you might think the claim, boasting “Great rates for dead rigger storage” was simply a joke.

Stryker scanned the site astrally. While Wico launched his drones to make a visual recon. As you have most probably expected. there is not a living soul nearby except the clerc. If the Cats ever were here with the package, they're long gone, along with their magical and mundane defences.

DIY is on the outskirts of town in a static zone. This makes reception difficult and imposes a +4 threshold for all matrix activities including communications.

The time now is 2:30 am.
Sorry for a small delay ;)

"Okay. Hardpan then. I'll talk to the bartender, and ask her grt me in touch with the Cats." Stryker sighed heavily. "I think that should be enough, and judging by the looks of it, the bar is still lively at this hour."

Mata looks at Stryker from behind his dark glasses "Good luck with that one Stryker-san." The duffel bag hangs at Mata's shoulder, he'll pull some nuyen in for the team even if the rest of the mission failed. "And before you go, we really need to talk about our'united front', it needs work."

By 2:20 am you drive back before the Hardpan. The lights are on, music is playing, seems like the club is back on line.

Wilco, responds what's the plan? Ask Stryker if he minds concealing one of the fly drones on him so we could have visual of what's going on? Wilco suggest that it will improve the teams response time, if needed.

Stryker just shook his head. "No. We don't need that. We're not going against the Cats. And as for the 'united front', we'll get one, when you start acting like it. For now, it's every man for himself. And I'm not a leader type, so it's not my job to organize the team. I'm going in, you guys can do what you want, as long as you don't insult or attack the other team... Oh, and Cursor, please look after my things. I'd like to keep them, but I can't make a good impression this way."
Stryker exits the van, and enters the club, looking for Sandy...

"Never said anything about being 'united'. I don't know you, besides that one run, and this few hours. Hell, it's like I've just met you all... I can work with you guys just fine - well, with some better that the others - but we're not a team yet. We just did one job together. One. And it almost blew in our face..." Stryker shakes his head, walking towards the club. "Maybe, if we have enough mileage together... We'll be a team. But now? We're just working on the same job. That doesn't mean I'm going to ignore you. It's just... Think about it. Whom will they trust?"

Sandy was busy, lots of clients she had no time for non-Lacota speaking fellows, but eventually Stryker got to her, and persuaded her to make another contact. This time she forwarded Stryker's commlink code, with a message that you're waiting for contact. According to Sandy it is unlikely they will contact you before their mission will be ended though. All you could do now is to wait...

By the 3:00 am, several seconds after the beeper woke Cursor up, but before he was really conscious, his Sleuth sprite returned, claiming mission accomplished. The original call with ransom note was coming from the Union Station mall - public matrix access point.

Ares node

From the outside it looks like the metallic ball (the comparative size of the ball if you have 2 meters is about 100 meters radius. The datatrails are coming to it like electric sparks discharging at the surface. From time to time users come in touch the surface, which then opens up a small hole that's used by them to enter. A multitude of anonymous icons are also using the public nodes slaved to the main one (scultped as small balls orbiting around the main one) those are chat nodes, recruitment boards, matrix shops, PR information etc.

The external perimeter of the node is consisting of patrolling ICs. There is couple of them. They are scanning the icons at random. registering their access_ids and running traces to find suspicious behaving icons. Generally accepted definition of suspicious are icons using stealth programs or having loaded exploit, armor or attack programs.

It seems there is a reason to believe that hacking a triple A corporation isn't a task to be attempted on the fly.
Having came close enough Cursor quickly assessed his chances ... and log off

The long and ardorous wait

And so you waited, from time to time one of you went to Hardpan to bring some soyburgers or beers or something as hour passed after hour.

About 8:00 am the text message arrive at Stryker's commlink. Stating: "Nothing is happening. Nobody is going to get hurt. Lena.".
Cursor immediately traced the call. It was 15 minutes away from you. Wilco sped to the location, where you found a disposable commlink standing on the trash bin. It was laying on the leather wrapped feather. The cats were nowhere to be found.

At 8:45 am Falcone called asking for the results. All you could say was that everything is going to be fine and cross your fingers.

The 9:00 am passed, then 9:15 then 9:30 and still nothing. at 10:00 another message from Lena "Stay cool. Nothing is happening. Lena."

This time you weren't even speeding. You knew they won't be at the place of the call. You even tried to calculate based on their position on where they could move but in vain.

Falcone in his next was calmed visibly after no ransom notes were relesed.

About 10:00 pm you got another message to pickup the package at the park. Same spot as for the previously setup meeting. No demands, just be there for the pickup.

So you did - you went there and they were waiting there. With their black van, and one of them on the bike. Cool, professional. The van doors had slided open. The suit from the picture came out. Behind him a large women was sitting with an assult rifle in her hands.
The suit went to you and as soon as he was 10 meters from the van the Cats drove away. A single spirit (albeit powerful one) remained at the distance. It was following you until you reached the ranch.

You pickup Belenkiy, drove him off to the ranch. He was there immediatelly taken under custody of the Knight Errants squad (led by the person Stryker has met at the night meeting with Falcone). Very soon he was medically and astrally scanned for injuries. None were found except the general tiredness.

All in all it ended well. Although I'd prefer you choose less stressful solution. Was all the remark you got from the Falcone.

With that you got your payment as agreed, plus bonus for Hammerjack's details plus additional bonus (5k) for dealing with this problem permanently plus Falcone bought off the equipment you stole from HJ (10k). He wasn't interested in it's origin, but his eyes shone at the tools that allowed messing up with someones brain. This man really love restricted toys.

After all that commotion the mage-kid sat down in the back of the van, and took the feather he bargained from Willco out of his pocket and smiled, sending a pic of it to Lena with a note saying "Someone really needs to explain her how Symphathetic Magic works. I understand the style, but that's a really nasty habit, if you work in the Awakened circles often. Thank you for your cooperation. Best wishes, and may our paths always cross on the same side."

The ride back was mostly silent, Mata, the package and the rest of the crew were strung out after such a long day. "Oh..." Mata says as he pulls out the Corps fragrant cigarettes "Thought you'd like these when we found you." Mata pulls out one of his and lights it, then offers the flame to Belinkiy "By the way, you might want to get a better class of friends. That halfer.... was more interested in his bottom line than saving your hoop omae."
