I got a chargen-level technomancer in my game that wants to access a secured, non-wireless network. I told him to get a datajack, save karma for skinlink echo, or use his comlink to plug in with the knowledge that a secured, non-wireless network would have security issues with wireless devices being connected to it. (alerts go off, spiders come, mayhem commences) I probably won't change that ruling, and honestly that's not that bad. He can probably connect, get the info he needs, and disconnect before he gets fried, then the team would need to get the hell outta dodge. Sounds like a fun run to me!

I got one problem though, non-wireless networks are kinda abandoned as far as rules go in SR4. Datajacks are the only thing that explicitly say "can connect to any non-wireless device," but I couldn't find any rules that say comlinks can connect to non-wireless devices or networks. Am I missing something obvious? Is it just understood comlinks can connect through some kind of "USB" type connection or something? If I were to follow the strict book rules, then I'd be forced to rule that the only way he can connect is via datajack or skinlink echo. Is that too harsh?

Just have him plug in the wireless adapter from Unwired into the port where the jack would normally go, and cut the device rating to a Signal of 1.
All it does is broadcast the signal over radio waves the same way it would through a cable, and it only broadcasts it a meter, so the TM shouldn't have to worry too much about Signal detectors that he can't see and disable.

Ehm the easiest source is often hidden before your eyes:
Quote from: Unwired, p. 199
Fiberoptic Cable
This cable is used to establish a wired connection between two devices.
If you wanna connect your Comm with the device. ;)

Or the Wireless Adapter if you wanna give the device the WiFi ability.
Quote from: Unwired, p. 200
Wireless Adapter
This device is a radio transceiver that plugs into the terminus of an optical cable or the optical jack of another device, allowing it to act as a wireless device with a Signal rating of 3.
