I only own the corebook so didn't know if the following existed.

I want to make a Thrower adept,
Former baseball pitcher, drummed out of the league for other reasons, turned to the shadows.
I want his primary weapons to be steel/lead balls.
A 3 inch lead ball weighs around 5 pounds, a 3 inch steel ball is closer to 2 pounds.

It would be aerodynamic and skillfully thrown with high strength.
Do hurling balls exist as a weapon in a sourcebook or would it be considered an improvised thrown weapon that only did base (S)p damage with missile mastery?

Run & Gun has a table of improvised melee weapons but I don't know of any tables of improvised thrown weapons.

Because it will likely be of interest to you, Hard Targets has the Precision Throwing power that adds range to thrown weapons. 0.25PP (max of 3 ranks) gets you +2 Strength for purposes of determining range, but not damage.

I think you're firmly in house rule territory here. The objects you're listing weigh considerably more than a baseball, but the question is how fast could they reasonably be thrown.

What I'd probably do is take throwing knives/shuriken as a baseline and then modify it. As a GM, I'd probably be okay with making the damage code better but the AP worse to counterbalance it. Say STR+2, AP+2, using the Physical Limit. There are other considerations that might potentially offset each other. For example, 3-inch steel balls might be suspicious but not strictly illegal, but at the same time it might be harder to carry a large supply of them, so ammo might be limited.

Why not carry real baseballs?
Apples or oranges?

Improvised weapons, yes, but not very suspicious

Still need to work with your GM on the damage code

If you have herolab, it is easier to hunt down all the adept powers for throwing

I feel like a 2-5 lb weight is going to have a VERY short range.

Maybe keep the background & use Shurikens instead.

Clearly your thrower should take up Petanque (french game somewhat similar to Bocce.  The balls are bit smaller than what you want, at ~3" diameter and up to 800g wieght (a bit under 2 pounds) and are made of hollow steel.  Of course this is better cover in Europe than in Seattle or neo-Tokyo :P

Well professional baseball has a flat ban on magic.  Being an adept that got found out and drummed out of the sport for his "cheating magic" is a background that partially writes itself.
RPG mechanics exist to give structure and consistency to the game world, true, but at the end of the day, you’re fighting dragons with algebra and random number generators.

I can imagine your character was part of an experimental adepts only baseball league that never took off.
Too many ways for pitchers and catchers to catch a ball in the air, limiting hitting the ball to grounders or whatever they're called.

Oh, I had read on another thread that Magic was banned but there were a few adepts.
But if they're banned as well then yes, background writes itself.  I was going to have him get drummed out for beating the hell out of an umpire but breaking a magic ban works as well and gives him a better reputation for his "Fame" trait.

I think one of the adept powers actually gives (S)p for any improvised thrown weapon.  I'd suspect that's about right for an actual baseball.
As for not suspicious, I could give him a rank in whatever I can specialize in Juggling with.  Have him walk around juggling so always having 3 balls at the ready, lol.

Thought just came to me, it would be more conspicuous, but what if I made him a grenadier?  Give him an array of grenades that he can trick shot around corners and such.

Um... how people have died from a baseball? The number is a fraction of the player base, as many of them died from being hit in the head by the ball (which admittedly would be fatal.)
But most people hit by a "bean ball" (the term for when a player is hit by a pitch) just "walk it off".... to first base... this is NOT physical damage :D

At 6p... that is 50 to 70% of the health total of most people! That means broken bones, crushed organs, ruptured muscle and connective tissues....

Throw Anything (the adept power) makes basic items (like a baseball) into deadly thrown items! (Just what you want!)...

So don't sell the power short! - a Troll adept can throw that baseball THROUGH your chest! (Damage is MORE then a heavy pistol!)
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Remember: You can't fix Stupid. But you can beat on it with a 2x4 until it smartens up! Or dies.

Just think of the ammo as sling bullets, thrown instead of slung. Now do a reasonable stat out, and there you go.
Spooky, what do you do this pass? Shoot him with my thunderstruck gauss rifle. (Rolls)  8 hits. Does that blow his head off?

Missile Mastery, page 172 of Street Grimoire, is what Chalkarts is talking about and that you are thinking of. It also gives a bonus to non-improvised thrown weapons. Throw Anything may have been the name in an older edition. Ah. The days of beaning people with dikoted coffee mugs....

Edit: I don't think this power has changed between editions. I think Throw Anything is from another game.

The main change is accuracy added to the game.  And instead of acting like every other thrown weapon improvised is accuracy 3. Basically making the improvised part worthless. Random wage slaves will dodge that frequently. It’s still worth 1pp as it basically combines improved skill and critical strike for non improvised thrown weapons. Just pointless for the bullseye gimmick people want. Also str vs 1/2 str for base dog and there isn’t a power to increase the damage. Cool power in 1e-4e with varying levels of usefulness, useful but not cool in 5e.

Perhaps look at bola weapon damage for a base? And tweak it...

Actually, in most Shadowrun games, they typically have a Lifestyle so they're either Murder Hobos (Street/Squatter Level) or Murder Renters (Low+ level)

That's a good idea.
I was looking at other potential ball bearing type things and got my hands on a pinball.
That seemed the perfect size, perhaps a different alloy for a little heft.  I suspect a Dwarf with adept level strength and accuracy could do some damage at ok ranges with a pinball.
