So I love Stargate SG-1, and the more I read about astral rifts, the more I think it could be an interesting cross-over idea.  In this case, the astral rift would be in control of a major corporation-which I could see going more the direction of Avatar, with the corp wanting resources and a native population defending it.  IDK, on one hand, I think hiring shadowrunners to investigate what lies on the other side of a permanent gate could be a great idea-what are your thoughts?

Hmmm, I'm a massive Stargate fan, but I don't think 'Stargate Shadowrun' is a great idea.

A) it involves off-world travel: Which is something that Shadowrun has never needed to spell adventure.
B) it would take fantastic resources to setup and utilise, so your investigation point is very valid: Why the hell would a corp trust Shadowrunners to do this?

C) Another option is here: Why not just a Free Spirit with the Atstral Gateway power? This can take shadowrunners into the Astral (where there are many unexplored locales) and is much easier to setup, Also, as it's the Astral, the GM has many more inherent flexibilities in defining/re-defining the adventure on the fly, as the Astral does NOT have to obey physical, logical or rational rules.

But an actual, physical, Stargate-like portal? Nope, I don't think this is a good idea... sorry, champ.

Well, there's one in DC, and at least a couple leading to the Hive...is it just me, or does that sound like a level from Nethack?

Well, yeah wasn't thinking an actual stargate .  Either a permanent fixed astral rift or a free spirit with the astral gateway power as you said.

I was toying with the idea to when reading about the artifacts from dawn of the artifacts, how they are suppose to lead to caches of magic hidden from the fourth world.

What if the caches are really on other metaplanes, and the artifacts open phyiscal gates that even a mundane can take to these metaplanes?

Now that, I have no problem with. It's the thought of Physically going to other Physical worlds in Shadowrun that I don't actually like (Suddenly, Shadowrun becomes Rifts™ and everybody becomes slaves to the Splugorth  :-[...)

But going to metaplanes, sure. Makes perfect sense, and has even been done in canon modules (damn you, Harlequin!)

If you're competent, obsequious, and completely amoral the Slugorth offer a very competitive benefits package.

The idea seems perfectly valid, however.. just one note..

So I love Stargate SG-1

Make sure your players do as well :)

Thats one of the hardest things as a GM, sometimes your idea of fun, is not shared with the players - and without players, no GM :)

Personally I could see a few metaplanes scenarios being fun, but I wouldn't base my entire campaign around it, I think it would get rather repetitative, watching all the SG-1 episodes is a bit like that, its the same over and over and you won't have funny one-liners to make up for it unless one of your players have a comedy talent :)

Of course it would also have a huge impact on your shadowrun world if this was a regular occurance, access to new resources/information would put a corp wayyy ahead of others, which might lead to balance issues, or the Corporate court getting antsy, which could lead to fun runs against that corp, so as a background story and a few runs, sure, and then let rest of the campaign focus on the fall-out from a corporation dealing with such.

I fully endorse this idea. There are all sorts of weird astral things in the game. The Watergate Rift is deadly or at least horribly unknown for people to enter. But there is a lot of untapped potential as can be seen in the
Metaplanar gazetteer sidebars in Street Magic. Who knows what kind of rifts exist in LA's deep lacuna or the Outback or other locations. It's really no different than running in UV hosts.

BTW, where did you read that about the artifacts?
