The term 'Defense Boost' and 'Armor Rating' are listed on Combat chapter, but they are nowhere to be find elsewhere.

I assume 'Armor Rating' is the "Defense Rating" listed on the Armor table, but is it? How about 'Defense Boost'? What are they about?

I don't mean to be snarky, but it would help if you include page numbers (or better still, quotes of the problematic text itself).

Without knowing exactly which instances you're referring to.. I can tell you that yes Armor adds to Defense Rating.  However, off the top of my head, I have no idea what instance you're asking about with regards to Defense Boost.
RPG mechanics exist to give structure and consistency to the game world, true, but at the end of the day, you’re fighting dragons with algebra and random number generators.

My bad, it's on p. 108.

Defense Boost
This quality is on Armor and bumps up the Defense Rating of a character. Most Defense Boosts from pieces of armor are not cumulative, though qualities, augmentations, and supplemental armor like helmets, shields, and pads can provide a little bump here and there.

Defense Rating
This reflects how tough that tin can or spider-silk kevlar blend you’re wearing is. This is a combination of Armor Rating and Body, and it might be affected by qualities and gear. It is compared to the Attack Rating to see if you have enough of an advantage to earn some Edge.

The section on Defense Boost is just a section saying you add the Armor's Rating to your Defensive Rating.  Given that the section on Defense Rating repeats that you add them, the Defense Boost is almost pointlessly redundant.  It does go into a bit more detail about gear that the Defense Rating rule references, and also clarifies that you don't get Defense Boosts from multiple pieces of armor, if you layer it :D

That helps~ (and I just can't help but feels like there are room for even shorter core book...

Armor Rating shouldn't exist. It should always be Defense Boost. Otherwise you have Armor Rating and Attack Rating.

DR = B + DB.
How am I not part of the forum?? O_O I am both active and angry!

Time for errata  ;)
(Not only this one, but every bit of 'Defense Rating' in the Gear Chapter perhaps.

While the text might seem to be a bit more complex than necessarily (this is something that Shadowrun is quite (in)famous for) it is technically not at all wrong or subject for an errata.

This is how it works:

Each piece of armor have a Defense Boost. Sometimes they stack (like a jacket and a helmet). Sometimes they don't (like armored clothing under a coat).

Then you calculate the Armor Rating of the target. The Armor Rating is the sum of all individual Defense Boosts that do stack plus the Dermal Deposits quality, the innate Mystic Armor power, the innate critter Armor power (but not the Armor spell or Combat sense spell), the Orthoskin augmentation (but not Bone Lacing or Dermal Plating). This distinction is important because of armor related mechanics like Hardened armor, Touch based attacks, Cold based attacks, Chemical based attacks and the Petrified status.

Next step is to calculate your Defense Rating. The Defense Rating is generally calculated as your Armor Rating from above plus your Body Rating plus Armor Spell, Combat Sense spell (but not Combat Sense power), Mystic Armor adept power, Bone Lacing augmentation, Dermal Plating augmentation, Cover status effect and Stilled status effect.

For most intents and purposes you only ever just worry about the Defense Rating and in most cases it will be a very static value. Just write it down once and then don't worry about anything I wrote above. But since the question about errata came up I just wanted to set the facts straight.

For future supplements the above distinction also open up advanced optional rules like APDS affecting the Armor Rating of a target directly (and with that the Hardened Armor rating).

The rating itself is just a static number though right? When you soak damage your are only is the body attribute with no modification, correct? Armor doesn’t seem to count into the soak so in the end it only contributes to the overall defense rating if I’m reading this correctly.

You are replying to a rather old thread and the question was about 'defense boost' and 'armor rating' and if it is subject for errata or not :)

There are situations and actions that influence your defense rating (the Take Cover action for example), but yes, the defense rating is mostly static. Just mark it on your character sheet.

You soak damage with your body attribute, correct.

Armor doesn’t seem to count into the soak so in the end it only contributes to the overall defense rating if I’m reading this correctly.
In previous edition damage values were much higher but you also reduced damage values with armor (together with body).

But since you and and pretty much all your opponents will probably always have some sort of armored clothing it seem as if they decided that rather than calculating a modified armor value that reduced incoming damage they just reduced the base damage values directly and cut armor out of the damage soak formula.

Armor is still factored into Defense Rating and Defense Rating is used to prevent attackers from gaining a tactical advantage while attacking you and in some cases you can even gain a tactical advantage over your enemies if they decide to attack you.

Sorry, reading through it seemed to apply and I didn’t want to start a whole new thread. Pulled this one up using search. Thank you for the response.
