Hi guys

Just a quick one:

I'd like one of my NPCs to have a bound spirit. Is the spirit roaming around ? Can it be asked a long term assignment ? :) Can he be bound to an item and be summoned back ?

Thanks

I assume this is a edition with bound spirits.

Unless ordered to roam they are on hold a complex action away. My memory sucks but not the astral but their meta plane I think.

Yes it can be assigned to a long term assignment. I think up to a year and a day. It’s generally considered a jerk move in the spirit world.

Bound to items. Normally no. At least not if I’m understanding your question. It could be a quirk of a “free” spirit I guess. Some kind of story point about items from A lost age. Once you learn the spirts true name you control it etc. players could be tasked with freeing it from the item, releasing the genie.

6we didn't necessarily get rid of Binding.

It just isn't letting PCs bind them.  NPCs? Still no reason they can't have bound spirits in 6we.

But other than that quibble: Yeah, what Shinobi Killfist said.

RPG mechanics exist to give structure and consistency to the game world, true, but at the end of the day, you’re fighting dragons with algebra and random number generators.

Older editions (1-3) note: nature spirits only lasted until the next sunrise or sunset, so for them the answer would be no.  There isn't a set time I can find for elementals, but based on my answer for #2 I'd say there should probably be a pretty limited time period (maybe days=force would be fair?).  It's also worth noting that an elemental that was more than a certain distance from the summoner would go free after completing it's current service.

There aren't rules for this that I'm aware of.  However, there are rules for binding elementals to guard a certain site.  It cost karma equal to the force of the elemental and lasted for a year and a day.  I'd say it's a sufficiently similar situation, personally.

All that said, if it's an NPC, just do what you like.  The idea is not distinctly un-Shadowrun, and there's no rule that PCs should be able to do or even understand everything an NPC can do.
