I read the /rating part to mean the rating of the program you are adding it to. So being that you are adding it to a rating 6 program it adds 4,500 to the total cost, but I will look at it more. I just looked at it quickly to try and figure out what would be possible

Naw, it's just the rating of the option that counts toward price.  There are unrated and rated options though.  Stuff like optimization is rated, while something like ergonomic is unrated.  Psychotropic or Biofeedback are a couple of heavy options that are rated.

I take it you're not using the software piracy rules though.
For blackmarket software, pirated gear is de rigueur.

Finding a pirated copy of a program is detailed on p 94 of Unwired.

Here's the highlights,
Quote
However, with a little work a hacker can gain access to the
peer-to-peer file sharing networks of the Cracker Underground
(see Virtual Private Networks, below), where she can find and
download programs for a nominal fee.
Finding and getting access to an appropriate network requires
an Extended Data Search + Browse (8, 1 day) Test.

Once a character has made contact with the
Cracker Underground, he can start looking for some-
thing to download. To find a specific program on the
file sharing network, make an Extended Data Search +
Browse (Availability + Desired rating, 1 Combat Turn)
Test. Downloading the program to your commlink or
terminal costs 10 percent of the street price of the pro-
gram (see Program Costs and Availability, p. 228, SR4).
A glitch on the Search Test indicates the program is
not on the network, and the hacker must find another
network and try again; a critical glitch indicates the
character has downloaded a bogus program infected
with one or more viruses.

So, without an existing contact in the cracker underground, it should take a couple days of searching to find a hookup.
Once you've got access to cracked programs, finding the one described should be Data Search + Browse (22) test, which isn't out of the question.

We can use the piracy rules, but we are still talking a day or more to get the program.

While I still do want the new exploit with mute, I'll wait and get it after the run. I'll try something else to follow Vincent.

Personally, I think the piracy rules could use some work, especially on the end of getting access to a VPN.  If all it takes is a browse check, it's really not underground at all.  There ought to be some vetting process, something technical and social, to make sure that you belong there..

Sounds reasonable and good to me. I'm open to suggestions. I also am afraid that as it is piracy makes programs too accessible and cheap and has the possibility to unbalance the game.

Well, really the existing problem is that a hacker needs basically every program out there at high levels just to operate (well, not EVERY program,) but each one costs as much as a standard drone.  Though piracy and degredation along with malware, bugs and so forth make stuff really complicated.

Yeah the piracy rules are a bit too free with the access to full programs, maybe up the price a bit. As to access, I figure that could be gotten from a contact or possibly as one. I kinda thought hacker house was like those pirate sites, just didn't want to come off as a complainer.

The program degradation is a concern to me due to the intervals on program coding tests. No way you can upkeep a pile of decent programs without trading upgrades with other hackers.

Can we hear the conversation between Dizzy and the gangers? 'Cause hammer and nails is so deserving a joke about their orientations

It depends on if Dizzy is broadcasting the conversation. If she is then you heard everything if not then you don't.

Which reminds me that I never stated that my sensory data is currently being fed to the VPN. It is, not that seeing Kage do matrix stuff is that useful.

I would say not.  Not really her style.  Besides, she has a logic of 2 and no computer skill.  I doubt she knows how to set preferences.

While we wait, or even while Vincent drives, Kage will run a data search in gridlink for the Johnson's vehicle using his travel times/places from the traffic cameras. As it is an in system search it's just a complex action per roll, I'm shooting for the hidden/obscure threshold of 12 as I figure it's better to roll to many times than bog things down by needing more :)
roll 1 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957918/ 4 hits
roll 2 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957919/ 6 hits
roll 3 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957920/ 3 hits

After that a search of said ID's movements(if applicable)
roll 1 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957923/ 3 hits
roll 2 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957925/ 5 hits
roll 3 http://invisiblecastle.com/roller/view/2957926/ 6 hits

He'll then copy any/all relevant data to his comm and delete records of his search.

The watcher should just follow Rat for now.  It'll be used it to communicate with the team from the astral once that starts, which should be as soon as she's safely in the autocab.  I want to try and visit his haunts and see if one of them has his lodge in it.

You'll only have time to go to one before he leaves so let me know which one if you go physically. Since it wounds like you are doing astral recon you will get to all of them. Which one will you start with?

Also Kontact you asked earlier if critical successes refreshed a point of edge and I think I forgot to reply. So I will now and the answer is yes
