My former SR group consisted of 2 femmes (one the GM) and 3-4 guys (including me).  The femme player's character was a teenage girl Bat shaman who came across as a wannabe vampire.  underneath the dye job she was very much a Blonde.

Which made her semi-continuous shots at my character for being blonde somewhat weird . . . but hey, teenage Blonde goth with rampaging hormones and the whole "i'm omniscient, omnipotent and immortal" made her usually fun to bounce off.

Y'know, I just realized that four of the last six PC's I've ran in various games have been female (including Mercedes over in Road to Redmond). Does this mean I'm more in touch with my feminine side?

Not especially.  I've noticed many male players wanting to play female PC's for the image their mind generates, and possibly some in game bonuses (women tend to have a pronounced effect on males).  Very, very few actually play to a more female mindset (and yes, there is a difference).
There is no overkill.

Only "Open fire" and "I need to reload."

Heh... never got any in game bonuses*, but it was definitely more of how I viewed the character. One of my favorites was for a Forgotten Realms game. I started off with the idea of a Samurai from Kara-tur. To make it so the PC was in Baldur's Gate, I had to come up with the backstory of why an imperial Samurai would have traveled the distance. That turned into a story that the emperor had sent his eight best samurai on a quest for a stolen artifact (sent one in each of the cardinal and ordinal points of the compass). That then became the backstory of how an seventeen-year-old would have been one of the best samurai in the empire; which turned into a prodigy child (and this is where the female *DING* idea hit) that had been recruited from her village for her exceptional skill and wound up pushing herself hard to repay the honor of her being chosen. The "ironic" part of the story is that her attitude was very much like Rukia Kuchiki of Bleach, but I hadn't even seen the anime until years after the game.

*In fact, it wasn't until the second game that I realized I was playing a Asian teenage girl in an RPG and the DM was a BIG fan of hentai -- and he introduced my nemesis as a ronin samurai that was constantly flirting with me. :o

I play about 50/50 both genders.

Most of the time my characters originate from a sketch or drawing I'm noodling with, so they tend to get their gender established that way.

80-90% of my characters in any setting ever are male. I hate playing/writing women. I don't know why. And even then, one of my female characters is still incredibly masculine. XD

I normally do not like playing with a guy trying to play a female character.  Either they say she is female and keep playing like a guy, or they play them as what ever their stereotype of choice is.  And I have never seen a man play a woman well.  But those are just my experiences.  As for women playing male characters.  I have never personally seen that done.  So I couldn't comment on it.  I personally prefer for people to stay with their own sex.  But that is because my poor brain has a really hard time looking at a guy and calling them a her and vice versa.

Meh... I usually just get into the character's head and play them that way. The gender of the character just usually doesn't factor in that much. I know I don't use stereotypes (or I hope I don't), but I also don't try to 'act' like a girl either... Then again, when I'm playing a guy, I don't act like a guy either.

Mostly, it comes down to how I picture the character and how they'd react to certain situations. When developing a character, I establish a "Logic Path" for that character and sometimes the gender affects that, sometimes it doesn't. I'm really just in it to tell their version of the story. *shrug*

My groups also didn't harp too much on the calling me "her" while playing, unless it was in character. And I guess I played her well enough that slip-ups like that were rare.

Sounds like you are just you when you play no matter what gender.  And that is a good thing.
