So, the face in my campaign is going to prove... interesting, at the very least.

He's a mystic adept, but that's nothing new. He's got interpersonal adept powers and positive qualities. Old hat.

Here's the weird part: He's got both the Mistaken Identity and Escaped Clone qualities, along with low-grade Amnesia and Flashbacks. So he's a copy of someone, looks a lot like someone who's at least moderately well-known, and doesn't know it. He gets hints once in a while (though I haven't yet had one trigger). Topping it off, he's got someone gunning for him (an Enemy) as a result of this.

What I need is a name: Who's face/retinas/fingerprints has he copied? Who's after him?

I've got a couple ideas, but I'm not sure how well these will work out.
  • He's the clone of Renraku's main PR guy, the one they trot out whenever they need to make a public announcement. He's not aware of the cloning, so it's the tech-heads that performed the Xeroxing who want him back. (These guys may or may not be affiliated with RC.) They didn't expect the copy to Awaken, which is why he got away.
  • Same PR guy, but he's the one who ordered the copying. Again, sprouting adept powers wasn't part of the package, and he wants his copy back. The idea was to use personality sims on him until he literally became the original, then send him off to some nefarious purpose.
I can run this either way -- since he has Amnesia, I can play my cards close to the table. With Flashbacks, I get license to drop the occasional vague hint as to what was really going on. And with an Enemy, I can use this to draw everyone into some weird conspiracy.

I don't have either the new Seattle sourcebook, or the world atlas, but I'd like to make sure I'm not totally wrecking some canon details in fleshing this out. The main things I'd need are a name to attach to the face ("Hey, aren't you so-and-so?"), as well as something suitable for a Flashback trigger. Maybe something like seeing a Red Samurai, though I don't know how often they appear on the trid.

Ideas?

A Japanese Mascot shown on The Simpsons.  Google will give you the full details.

And probably an epileptic seizure as there's a Japanese Commercial involved.   :P

Keep in mind that teaching full body clones produces functional morons with the best facility training and imprinting available.
Quote from: Augmentation p52, 53
Under enforced growth conditions, the brain is not able to keep up with the rest of the body, yielding an underdeveloped brain that cannot keep the body alive on its own. Even slow-growth clones exhibit mental disabilities and only an animal-level intelligence at best ...
I went down a similar route a few months back with Shiawase and fudged over the fact that the last 30 years haven't advanced wimp brain enhancement and training techniques one iota.

Not exactly answering anything, but you might have missed that bit. (or there might be something I've missed, which would be great to find out)

The most important question: Does he remember getting amnesia?

Corporate Guide lists one Ineko Kawami as a Renraku spokesperson in Chiba. Nothing with a specific name in Seattle '72. I'm sure I can find the names of some Renraku people from Shutdown, Brainscan and System Failure if you want something Seattle specific, but there is no guarantee those folks would still be there after the hullabaloo.

So, OP is basically playing Ewan McGregor from 'The Island'?

Most of my players play Ewan McGregor from Trainspotting.

I appreciate you checking on these; if it turns out they don't mention any names, I'm more than happy to make something up. Just wanted to see if they already had someone filling this role first.

As for the "brain can't keep up" part, this might be a case of a black-box experiment to get around that limitation.

I've been thinking on this, and got another idea, expanding a little on one of the originals: Said PR rep is aging/has AIPS/contracted HMHVV, and isn't expected to live much longer. Renraku wants to maintain a "unified front", and rather than put up a new spokesman, they got the bright idea of cloning the existing one, using full-blast personality simsense to burn this guy's knowledge and personality into the copy -- not exactly a pleasant experience (thus the flashbacks).

The amnesia would be a result of all this simsense trying to override the default memories (short as they are), along with some sort of trauma tied to the escape itself.

His turning out to be Awakened wasn't part of the plan. Given that one of his adept powers is Iron Will, this explains how he could've kept his wits during their attempts to brainwash him. I'm thinking that they tried something really invasive, which triggered his escape attempt. This whatever-they-did might be the cause of both the flashbacks and the amnesia.

So, yeah, we're getting something like a cross between The Island, Jason Bourne, and The Prisoner. Good stuff.

Shutdown and Brainscan just say "Renraku spokesperson", though I did just give it a cursory glance. If you want to use Kawami I'm sure that's fine, but if you want to make up a rep on Seattle I'm sure there's no problem with that either.
I like to use official characters and stay on cannon as much as possible, but sometimes the writers just don't give you much to go on(I'm looking at you whoever wrote the Realm Beyond in Emergence!) and you have to be creative on your own, which it sounds like you have covered.
Sounds like a neat game. If it works out, write it up for us.

Wilco. This guy's set-up started feeding me ideas as soon as it started. We've kept his list of Qualities hidden from the other players, so they're in for a surprise when it's revealed exactly why he looks an awful lot like this guy.

I picked the PR guy, 'cause I was imagining something like how we've got certain ad campaigns where they always use the same person -- like those insurance ads with the guy getting all sorts of beat up. "I'm a hot babe." "I'm your favorite team's flag."

So, this runner not only looks a lot like Renraku's current ad-man -- at least enough where people can't describe the former without actually describing the latter -- but he even has the same biometrics as the guy. It hasn't really come up yet (we've only had two sessions), but when it starts to rear its head, the others are going to start wondering why, and that's about the point that I'm going to have the hunting party appear.

And woe to this character when the trid movie Saiko vs. the Red Samurai hits theaters.

That guys name is Dean Winters and he has rocked some of the best television in history. 30 Rock, Homicide, OZ, Rescue Me and, most importantly, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
Anyone on Terminator gets a pass from me. Sure he made some annoying commercials, but Charley Dixon saved John Connor!
What have you done for John Connor lately?

Hah! Yeah, thanks for the name, that'll help me get the modern-day references so the players know what I'm talkin' 'bout. +1 to you.

I forget, outside of Cyborgs, do they have brain transplants?  Might get around the brainless clones.  As would one of those full body genetic alterations.  Pushes it more towards Bourne Identity, as he was presumably someone before getting tanked up.
EDIT: Actually, does he have to worry about the Copyright Cops coming after him?  (Kopyright Kops?)
