To apply First Aid, a character needs the right tools for the job, in this case a first aid kit. Any test made without a kit suffers a –2 dice pool modifier, and no Edge can be spent on the test.

I think for most tables, medkits will be what they use for first aid tests... simply because it's too much bookkeeping to have a different piece of gear for each test.  However, RAW, medkits are for medkit tests.  You can't use a medkit for first aid, the way I read it, because:

It takes one minute to hook up the patient, get the medkit to spit out a diagnosis, and begin treatment.

...which right away puts treatment outside the magic first minute in which you can apply First Aid.

The first aid kit that the book mentions is just a regular old toolkit for the Biotech skill.  pg 273

First aid kit is a miss in the rules.

German rules have added a special "First Aid Kit" for 50 Nuyen, availability 1.

Yes a medkit and a first aid kit is effectively the same thing.

First Aid typically require that you have some basic Biotech knowledge and access to some bandages (such as plasters, gauze dressings and/or crêpe rolled bandages) and basic tools (such as safety pins, tweezers, sticky tape and scissors). A First Aid kit does not count as a Medkit.

Note that a First Aid healing test can also be performed with improvised tools or without proper tools and supplies at all, just that you get a negative dice pool modifier of 2 dice and can't spend Edge on the test.

 

A Medkit also count as a First Aid kit, but is far more than just a First Aid kit. In addition to bandages and tools etc (mentioned above) it also comes with various drugs and antidotes, a biomonitor, an expert system and possible also a defibrillator system. To take a Medkit healing test you must have access to a Medkit and you typically first need to hook up the Medkit to the subject (which take a minute) so the talk-active expert system can correctly make a diagnose, administer antidotes and advice on proper procedure (Medkit rating can substitute lack of Biotech skill).
