Recently, I've had the desire to make a reaction-based character. I don't just want to make a street samurai, I'd like to be good at something other than just killing. But still, I'm planning on having my reaction at the augmented 9, perhaps by starting with 5, getting level 2 Wired Reflexes, and level 2 reflex enhancers. The idea of being unnecessarily fast appeals to me, and I actually have one question: The book described wired reflexes as everything being slowed down, but to what extent? Can I see a bullet whizzing by my head, and catch the shrapnel from a grenade? I need to know the limits of high reflexes.

However, I am a little flustered as to what else I could do. Maybe make my character information-based, or specialize in intimidation and torture. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I'd like to have a fun character fleshed out by this weekend.

As for the personality, my idea for the character was a rich girl who was pampered her entire life. After she learned that her father was planning on making her the next heir to the business, she ran away with some of his money and got some of the most expensive cyberware she could have thought of. With this, she quickly got into shadowrunning and eventually learned...something. Still not sure what skills she picked up, as I'm still not sure where I'm going to take the skills.

nobody can actually dodge bullets. Dodge in SR terms means being fast enough to evade being targeted by rifle barrels. The slowing down thing is just a feeling that you get, it's not fun.
The limits are what RAW tells you. you are exactly three times faster than a normal being.

if you just want reaction speed, you could also go Adept. use magic to improve your reflexes to 6, and then grab improved reflexes 3. that would use 4.5 of your 5 magic, and give you 4IP with a reflexes of 9.

aside from piloting skills, fast reflexes are also great for AR hackers.

I also recommend looking into the Move-by-Wire system from Augmentation (with Restricted Gear so that you can get the 18-availability rating 2 MbW). It adds +2 to Reaction, +1 to Dodge skill, +1 IP per level, AND acts as skillwires.

As a rule of thumb, to see what an attribute is good for, the easiest thing to do is read through the Active Skills and see what skills are linked to that attribute. REA is good for dodging and piloting, in addition to increasing your Initiative score.

Incidentally, my main SRM character is a street racer/rigger with a modified REA of 10, Pilot Ground Craft 6 (+2 Wheeled), and a sports car (+2 Handling), so his normal dice pool for driving tests is 20. He has R2 MbW. Let me tell you, those skillwires are handy (especially in Missions, where you may be called on to perform odd tasks because no one else has the requisite skills.)

If I recall correctly (I don't have the books here at the moment) you can't combine two different reaction enhancers.  so wired reflexes and reflex enhancers don't add.

wired reflexes and reaction enhancers are the exception
and MBW and Reaction Enhancers (I think Synaptic Booster and Reaction Enhancers too)

If you really want to max reaction, Move-by-wire is a good option.

I generally prefer bioware but my current character for example have genetic optimisation and metagenetic improvement (and neoteny) with mbw 2. With that you can reach 12 reaction at creation if you really want to max it.

My character start with 7(11) reaction and 6(9) dodge and 16 init, not really interesting since dodge 4(6) is enough imo but it was part of character spirit :).

Reaction is not the most effective attribute to max this way but it can be fun.

Difference between 5(9) and 7(11) reaction is not big during game compared to the cost.

For a "clean" character, synaptic booster 3 or adept is much better but it's really expensive to max it at creation. And you won't get much points to spend elsewhere.

A suggestion for a character can be stealth group with pilot (normal skills + skillsofts) and good smuggling skills. Social skills and mechanics to complete it would be great.

Synaptic booster can't be combined with other init enhancers (but I consider Suprathyroid Gland works with synaptic booster at my tables)

As to what the character can focus in other than combat-  vehicle skills run off of reaction.  You could be an old fashioned meatspace drive/pilot/smuggler who still used a steering wheel rather than a rigger adaptation.  Or get some more gear imlpated and go vehicle rigger, maybe with a minor in drones.

Hey, you don't have to be limited to nothing but Reaction-based skills.  Getting a 5(9) Reaction takes 40 build points for the Attribute, and either 84,000 Nuyen (for wired reflexes: 2 and reaction enhancer: 2), or 85,000 Nuyen and the restricted gear quality (for move-by-wire: 2).  You have plenty of points and resources left for other things.

I ended up finishing the character a little while ago, and completely forgot about this threads. So I suppose this is sort of an update.

I got my reaction up to 10 and my IP at 3 (I didn't want it at 4, that's just ridiculous) using the Move-by-Wire system not only because it was better, but because the idea behind it is so awesome and unique.

The direction I went was hyper-perceptive and reaction. My thought was "What good is reaction if I don't see it coming?" So I got the best Perception skill I could with augmentation (19 dice pool), and then toned it down to 15 as per our group's rules (we cap all pools at 15). I had a run with the character, and it went pretty well. I could fire 30 bullets into an enemy before he could get 1 into me.

It was a fun character, and the character build I find interesting. She was a rich girl who was taught to be refined for her entire life (she has a 1 in every basic academic skill), but she never took to it well and ran away when she was 16 with as muh of her father's money as she could take. Had a rough patch in her life for about 4 years until she got married and became a runner. The man she's married to thinks she is a reporter and thinks her name is what's attached to her fake SIN. She is a compulsive shopper with a 5 in fashion and is half girly-girl half as-kicking street samurai.

I like it. I had thoughts, but it's too late! :P

So I read this because I saw wired reflexes, and I'm looking at WR for my character, Jose Sandoval. How much does WR cost?

Not very much, standard wired reflexes are cheap in nuyen but very expensive in essence. Level 3 takes up 5 essence.

If you want to save essence, go with synaptic boosters. It's only .5 essence per level, but 80k nuyen per level as well.

Can I see a bullet whizzing by my head, and catch the shrapnel from a grenade? I need to know the limits of high reflexes.

With Wired Flexes you aren't actually "sped up" but your perception of time changed and your REACTIONS to situations are sped up.  Everyone around you just seems to do things soooo slowly because of the "thought time" involved in moving.

Best "currently world" example I've heard was given by a GM back in college.  A person with wired reflexes feels, all the time, like you do when you're in a hirry at the store and you end up behind some 80-year-old "little old lady" who's buying $20 worth of stuff with pennies...  And she's counting them out one at a time.  1... 2... 3....

Wired Reflexes do not effect your speed, they eliminate the natural lag time between noticing something, processing what you've seen, deciding on a course of action, then informing your muscles what to do.  By way of example:

You, Luther, Frank and I are playing two synched Wack-A-Mole games.  You have Wired Reflexes 3, Luther Has Flexes 2, Frank Has Flexes 1 and I'm purely natural.  Before you guys had the modifications we were pretty much the same and on average we'd tie in a series of games.  Now, however, there's a marked difference.

1. We'd all 4 SEE the mole pop up at the same time.
2. Our brains would all identify the mole at the same time and formulate a "plan of attack" on the mole at the same time.
3. Our brains would SEND the signal to our arms on what to do to hit the mole.
4.  Here's where it would get diferent:
a.  The signal from your brain to your arm would travel faster that all of us, so your arm would move first
b. a split second later, Luther's arm would move since his signals were faster than the signals for Frank and me
c. Frank's arm would move a split second after Luther, because his signals are faster than me
d. I would finally move my arm because my signals were moving the slowest.
However, every part of the movements would be going at the same speed.  You swing your arm at the same speed I do, you just swing first.
5. And here's where the biggest advantage of Wired Reflexes shows. You smack your mole first, and your muscles report back the task is complete and they're ready to go again.  The return signal is just as fast as the sent one, so you "reset" for another hit faster than the other three of us as well (followed by Luther, then Frank, then me), meaning you now have the time to identify, plan and execute another attack before we can reset from the first hit.

All the hits and movements are the same speed, it's just that the time required to inform the muscles how to make the hit as well as the "returned information" on the hit is seriously reduced.
