So, I am currently in a new place with a new group of players.  I don't believe that many of them have ever really played through Shadowrun except for one player.  What I am contemplating doing is starting them off around 2035/40 and then trying to take them all the way through to 3074.

I don't think that all the PCs would be able to survive roughly 40 years in the shadows.  That's a hugely tall order considering what occurs over that time frame.  I think I will begin with the group and run it for as long as the majority of the original PCs survive (or the group wants to keep going).  Once that happens, fast forward a few years and start a new group with their old PCs and potential contacts/foils/general-purpose-GM-tools.

How does this sound to the GMs here?  Any tips or ideas are appreciated.
It's not the man with the gun that gets you.  It's the three bullets he fired that tore through you vital organs that's killed you.

That sounds like a tall order to me, but more power to you if you can pull it off.

I read a "study" WotC did a couple years ago that said most gaming groups play about twice a month and only stay coherent for 11 months before something in the RW instigates a collapse.

Oh, I have no doubt that I'll see a good bit of group...splintering.  I am hoping that I can get others to fill in the gaps.  There are 2 or 3 people that should be constants over the next couple of years.  I'll keep my fingers crossed just in case though.

My first game was actually set in the 2040s.  Cyber wasn't very common yet, and it had a very hardboiled
roaring twenties feel to it, but that was a lot of GM interpretation.

As far as taking them all the way through SR, it is a tall order, but can be done. I did that to a group in 3rd
from 2050 - 2063(which was much easier to transfer stats to) and they loved it. None of the characters
were the same throughout the story (Some retired, several died, and a few became mindless infected/spirit fodder),
but their main Fixer was always the same.

The WOTC study if I remember it correctly, compared all age groups as the same, so if you're an adult playing
with a group of adults, you can usually expect quite a bit longer than 11 months. The main factor in the 11 month
time frame was that WOTC games that they studied (D20 D&D for the most part) have a much larger presence
of youths and young adults playing that are still tied to college and high school.  It is very common for such groups
to filter out quickly, because every year someone graduates/drops out/goes to jail. I've found 2 years to be much closer
to average in my time gaming, but then again maybe I'm at the good side of the bell curve (and I don't feel like getting
D20 Cancer).

Typo, I assume? Anyway, all of the PCs don't have to survive, and realistically they probably wouldn't all survive; don't softball them.

All I can really think upon reading this is how much I wish I had players with enough free time to sit them down and run them through every published SR adventure/campaign that I like, in sequence. That would be awesome. I have trouble even getting together to play SR once every month nowadays.

Yes, indeed, 3074 is a typo and should read 2074.

My goal is lofty and could be Extremely unattainable.  However, I have often believed that our reach should be greater than our grasp so I sally forth to see just how close I can get.

My gaming group has hung together for the past 4 years.  The one before that, before I moved, lasted 4 to 5 years as well.  Mostly adults in my groups, although a few younger ones (teens/young adults) were there as well.
There is no overkill.

Only "Open fire" and "I need to reload."

Oh god. I'm laughing so hard right now. I'm so glad he made that typo so that I could learn of the existence of BattleRun

Wow I feel really lucky.  The group I game with have majority wise been gaming since high school(they are mid 30's).  I've been playing with them for about 8-9 years as they are all friends of my wife's.

We play weekly and now are actually running SR 1 nite and have another nite that will cycle games every few months.  But that nite has been going strong for years.

I mean it's not old days in college when we would skip classes to game, but it's better than nothing :)
