He may mean he's running third edition, or he may mean he's using earlier fourth edition books (pre-Anniversary).  The twentieth anniversary (often called SR4A) was an update to fourth edition, and is the current rules-set being used.

Ok well he must mean 3rd edition. Thank you very much

I will say this: while I loved 3rd edition and have GMed it since high school (going on 12 years now) I would definitely recommend 4th edition.  3rd edition rules are alot clunkier and nowhere near as streamlined.  Rigging is a pain in the ass, and using the Matrix means you just about have to run two separate games in one session.  More power to him if he wants to try for it, but I think 4th edition is miles better.

Agreed. And if he's running a previous edition due to the timeline, it's actually pretty easy to convert stuff back to earlier timelines.

Yeah, i'm doing that now. just ran the first half of mercurial, REST OF THIS POST IS SLIGHTLY SPOILERIFIC* and somehow our dwarf capoeira street samurai from Latin America with the braggart quality and hydraulic jacks ended up *riding the dragon that shows up at the warehouse/condo scene  and threatened to eat it's children while it flew around trying to throw him. If it weren't for him leaping off and landing on the warehouse roof and then descending into the building, he'd be Kilika Fried Chocobo by now. 'Course, the dragon just wanted to leave. */SPOILER*

The good ol' days of SR2 and SR3 where the calculator and a love for mathematics was your best friend.  :'( Give me a moment, I think I have something in my eye...
