Goal: A former Doc Wagon HRT mage healer that's gone off her little rocker.  Dice pool of 10 to 15 in primary skill is normal for the group.  Not intended to be used in Missions with PCs with a bunch of Karma, so no need to have pools in the 20's.  However, if there are skills that I'm overlooking that a Doc Wagon ambulance mage would or should know, or perhaps wouldn't know at all, I'm listening.  The would be player asked me to just build her a "crazy street doc type that uses magic and wants to add in bonus features to folks who she operates on". So, yeah, here's my first jab at that concept.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Eric

Name: Emma Brown
Street Name: Doc Shorty
Dwarf female Age 28
Height 1.2 meters Weight 50kg

== Description ==
Former Doc Wagon HRT Magical Medical Support forced to retire due to “disability”.

== Background ==
Former Doc Wagon HRT Magical Medical Support forced to retire due to disability. Her partner died during a high threat response when an overzealous guard fired on their ambulance, causing it to crash.  Currently putting in 20 hours a week at a shadow clinic, but has started running in an attempt to save up the money to open her own clinic.  Doc Wagon has her records on file.

== Concept ==
Magical Support and Healing. Fairly delusional – sees it as her job to give patients “the bonus plan” by adding additional unasked for cybernetic enhancements when they go under her knife. Always wears a dirty, blood stained white doctor’s jacket over her other clothes. The Doc Wagon patches have “Wagon” somewhat crossed out with a marker and “Shorty” written above it.
Short, grumpy, delusional, whack-a-doodle magical medic.

Armor is of questionable use, since it makes you glow on the physical plane which is bad.

Detox is a very useful spell and fits your theme, and you should consider having it.

Increase Reflexes is really, really good and is a Health spell.

You appear to have no armor?

Your commlink doesn't work; System is capped by Response and your program ratings are capped by System.

Horse seems thematically like a really odd match for this character. Why did you pick it? There's a bunch of other mentor spirits that give Health and seem like a better fit.

Well the comlink works, in that while the programs will operate at a lower level they should run (at 3) and armor is included (Urban Explorer jumpsuit, ect.)

Maybe replace Distinct Style with Poor Self Control (Compulsive) at 10 points, to reflect her urge to give people the gold package upgrades when they are under the knife.

If you have the money, some extra, uninstalled cybergear could be a fun additions.. things to put into patients. Cheap eyes and a few secondhand datajacks would only run 500y each or so.

For survivability in a combat zone I would try to get more body and I would increase Counterspelling (protect your patient and your partner). Maybe dropping Enchanting 1 and some of the other skills you have at a very low dicepool. And I would take Dodge.
As a knowledge skill I would go for a few skills related to her former line of work (pharmaceuticals etc.).
I think armor is an ok spell. It is not sneaky but armor for a DocWagon member doesn't have to be. But yes get Detox.
Oh, and Edge is always good to have :-)

@Umaro
Never noticed that the Armor spell made you glow.  Seems like that should be the first custom spell researched - stealth armor without the glow.  Maybe physical barrier and toss up a magic wall between the agressor and the person the PC is attempting to get to to heal? or even the dome over the both of them version of phys barrier?

Physical armor are the Urban Jumpsuit and the Industrial Coveralls w/chem prot. 5. Both would have old doc wagon patches.

I can drop the commlink to a 3 system and the suite to basic + to keep everything at 3 or less and save 850 nuyen.

Mentor Spirits
Well, Horse = Freedom.  Seemed least controversial.
Bear and the berserker rage seemed wrong. Crocodile's need to charge for everything doesn't make for a good team player. "Sure Mr. Street Samurai, I'll heal you. 500 nuyen first though."
Dark Goddess might work, but I'm not sure if the player in question would go for the disadvantage since we're not a completely pink mohawk campaign.
Great Mother might fit, but I'm not sure the player would be into the whole fertility thing.
Phoenix and Sun would both fit, but originally I was going with moderate pyrophobia (10pt) as one of the drawbacks, but never re-evaluated the mentor spirit after changing that.

@Joush
I thought about the compulsive as a drawback, but I'm not sure it'd happen enough in game to make it worth the 10 points.  Healing and surgery is often done during down time between runs.
Not a lot of cash left over, but cyber can be stolen from medical facilities and/or harvested from slain foes if need be. Not sure if the player will realize that second part at first, or if she'll decide to be that ghoulish.

@Mason
Starting PC in a starting campaign of new to SR players, some of which I'm going to have to have movie night with so they get the genre.  (Now how the kid that's into Anime has never seen Ghost in the Shell, I don't know.)

@Rasmus
I was thinking of some diversity in skills just so the new to the SR system player knows the skills are available to learn, but yeah, more counterspelling might be a good idea.  There is a street shaman (rat totem) in the group who has the sorcery group at rank 3.
Already have chemistry (pharmaceuticals), biology (anatomy), and Doc Wagon Procedures as knowledge skills.  I think I will swap out Security Design (Corp) for Medical Care as a knowledge skill.
Athletics group give Gymnastics, plus climbing and running and swimming which often come into play as a runner.

@Whomever,
Should I squeeze in 1 rank of Etiquette for a small amount of bedside manner, or not worry about it?

== Notes ==
Dark Goddess
In ancient times, the creative power of fertility was often as frightening as it was awesome. The power of creation
was linked with the power of destruction in a necessary cycle that forever fed itself. Early goddess-figures of the earth and fertility were therefore also tied to the destruction of war and death, as two sides of the same coin. Ishtar, the primordial Mesopotamian goddess of fertility and war, is an example of a Dark Goddess figure. As is Kali, the Hindu source of rebirth and death, and Morrigan, the Celtic queen of war and doom, whose origins trace back to the dark and rich soil of the earth. Lilith, the cursed first woman of Hebrew myth, also has a large following among female magicians of the Sixth World.

Advantages: +2 dice for Combat and Health spells.

Disadvantages: Ruled by extremes of both creation and destruction, followers of the Dark Goddess often relish in confrontation. They must make a Willpower + Charisma (3) Test to avoid escalating a conflict, no matter how small, into a major clash, whether physical, mental, or social.  //This should be fun for me as the DM, so screw it, a bit more pink mohawk.

//Also, yes, I realize that Pilot Groundcraft (Wheeled) should be (bike) if I want the bonus with the current vehicle, but I am hoping that eventually the PC might want their own ambulance, or find an opportunity to steal one.

A few thoughts:

You could summon task spirits and give them first aid and other biotech skills. They make excellent medics and their very high proficiency in assessing saves money that would have to fund diagnostic tests!

Has anyone told you about cerebral boosters yet? If you are willing to bump magic to 6, you can afford the essence hit and get some outstanding 'ware. Cerebral boosters in particular will up your logic by 2 points (they are cheap and pretty soon after chargen you'll be able to afford the rating 3 version). A high logic is really important since it helps resist drain and powers a lot of the skills you seem to care about. Plus you get more free knowledge skills. You can also pick up PuSHeD, a transgenic protein exchange that will give you another +1 to all your logic-linked skill tests.

You also might want to buy some Psyche. It's a legal drug that has no negative side affects and boosts your logic and intuition by 1. It costs 200 a pop, so don't squander it. Oh, it also makes sustaining spells easier.

I have no idea what the hell the diagnose spell is good for. Just have a spirit assess the patient.

Have you thought about the Resist Pain spell? It's pretty decent, and your patients will love you for it, especially if they are in need of long term care. You could save a clinic a fortune on pain killers, IMO.

You might want stunball over stunbolt. There's lots of ways to knock someone out. But there's not a lot of good ways to knock a bunch of people out at the same time.

Analyze Truth might be good for the data collection aspect of the job. Ever watch HOUSE? Patients lie about all kinds of stuff that you'd need to know to properly treat them - and patients in need of a street doc have more to hide than most. Their lies could come back and bite you. You can protect yourself, your patients, and your clinic by using this spell to sort out the lies.

I'm going to file away the task spirits for the next time I play a mage myself.  Mostly because I don't want to hit a new to the system player with the added level of complexity of possession traditions.  But it'd be damn hilarious to have a crash test dummy in a nurses uniform as the vessel for a task spirit.  Wish it wasn't just four possession traditions that offered access to Task spirits.

I know about cerebral boosters, but since that sort of starts you down the path of the burnout, I'm not sure that's what this girl is looking for.  In a cybered up herself street doc, yeah, ceregbral boosters and that positive quality that'd let you take pushed as a permanent trait would be all that.

Psyche, I'll have to put on the shopping list.

Diagnose:  This spell gives the subject information on the target’s general health and any illnesses, injuries, or other medical problems the target might have. The net hits determine the information provided, as noted on the Detection Spell Results table, p. 198, SR4. The caster must touch the subject of the spell.

So, four hits, and bam, I know what ails ya, even if you lie about your symptoms.  :)  However, Analyze Truth and Resist Pain will be on the short list of new spells to learn as they have some pretty good uses outside of medicine.

Stunball instead of Stunbolt is a darn fine idea, especially since this will be the second mage in the party, and the other doesn't have an area spell either.  Ok, sold on this too.

Thanks.

Her last name is Brown, and she's a Doctor.

I will be sorely disappointed in my species if at least one of your players doesn't see what you did there.

You give me too much credit.  I opened an old Pittsburgh phone book to a random page and listing, which just happened to be Brown, Emma.  And until you mentioned it, the Dr. Emmit Brown thing didn't really click with me.  On the other hand, my players don't need to know that. ;)

I did the whole "Doc Brown" thing years ago.  Then switched it to a lightning mage called Dr. Thunder after a generic bottle of Dr. Pepper exploded on a friend of mine during chargen of Mage: The Assencsion Characters.
