This was the result of a simple experiment in seeing what kind of wacky and interesting characters one can create by abusing the SURGE rules in Runners Companion. This is really more of an NPC character that would be pretty fun to have an unsuspecting group of runners encounter, but he's built to 400 BP, so unless I misread a rule somewhere in his build, he's technically a valid PC character.

Background:

John Trent was your typical troll in the sprawl, using his might to hire himself out as muscle to the highest bidder, which was only made all the easier after he Awakened and his fists started packing some magical punch. Not interested in the chump change he could make as a bouncer, he used his unique skill set and his legitimate ID to get a cushy gig as the personal bodyguard to some hot shit exec for a local chemical company. Now, John wasn't exactly what you'd call 'ecofriendly,' even before it became part of his job description to punch any wise ass ecoterrorists who got too close to Mr. Bossman in their tree-hugging teeth. So when the Comet came around and SURGE decided he was well suited to be a walking, talking Honey Locust tree, Trent was understandably pissed at the universal concept of Karma. Forced to leave his cushy gigs for reasons that should be obvious, Trent has recently been devoting his time to becoming one with nature, somewhat literally, and not entirely of his own volition. He has taken to claiming a three kilometer radius around Lake Forest Park as his home turf, and has made it his personal mission to clean up the area, both literally and figuratively.

Not quite finished, as you can see, but you can already figure out the basic concept from here. It's a troll that is basically a walking tree. With his 9 Strength, +3 DV from being a changeling, +4 for Critical Strike, and +1 DV from Martial Arts, Thorntree has a base 13 DV unarmed, which is doubled against barriers and structures to 26 with Smashing Blow. He also stands at +2 B/I from Natural armor, +2 B/I from Mystic Armor, and +2 Impact from Bark skin, for 4/6 armor while naked, which stacks with anything he might wear. Of course, any armor he wears is more expensive, as it has to accommodate for his Thorns and Bone Spikes.

EDIT: Edited to add skills. He now has 10 BP free to spent on gear.

Harold and Bob/Herbert?

Huh, I never considered that connection. I just stumbled upon Tree Man from the combo of various SURGE traits and thought it was a spiffy idea.

Thats a fun concept  ;D

Give him some skills both to reflect his former life as a bodyguard (Perception, Pistol, Infiltration, Shadowing etc.) and some skills based on his new life as nature guy. And use a few points to by some basic gear and armor.

I added some skills that I think would fit both his past as hired muscle and his current life as a nature boy. I also dropped his edge a point, leaving 10 BP left over to figure out his (admittedly sparse) gear.

there's an adept power called Rooting. How could you miss that???

Oh shit, how did I miss that? I guess that'll have to wait for after initiation. I can't really make room for it now.

I would drop infiltration as a group. I dont see him using palming or disquise ("I swear I saw a strange living tree running this way but now I can only see this strange troll with a fedora and a big blue beard").
That should free up a couple of extra points.
What about Knowledge Skill: Recycling for those?

Disguise can be used for camouflage as well, so its not so much Thorntree disguising himself as a normal troll as it would be disguising himself as a normal Tree. Then the Lumberjack who gets a little too close never knows what hit him.

You've got a point on Palming, but at that point its cheaper just to have the group.

I cannot remember 100%, but i think bark skin is incompatible with every other skin-modification like e.g. dermal alteration. He still has his natural dermal armor, but additional one? I donīt think so. Also drop the thorns, you are a troll with already low agility, you cannot afford -1 die on all physical actions. Also i donīt think that +2 of bone spikes and +1 of thorns add. Either-or, not both of them. Shock gloves and Unarmed attack also donīt add.

Bark Skin is a subset of Dermal Alteration, which specifies that it is incompatible with any other natural or artificial skin alteration. To me, this sounds like complete modification, like Sharkskin, Smooth Skin, Dermal Plating, Orthoskin, etc. Troll Natural armor doesn't sound like it should fall under that, as if it did, he should lose his +1, not just being unable to take extra. It's either both or neither. That sounds like something that should be referred to explicitly in the text if its an issue.

Thorns does not take -1 die to all physical tests, it adds +1 to the threshold, or that's what it seems to do. Perhaps they errata'd that +1 to a -1, but even so, Thorns is a negative trait that fits the theme. Its supposed to have a drawback.

Thorns and Bone Spikes both say "Add +(num) to the Damage Value of any unarmed attacks." If they didn't stack, it would explicitly say that it doesn't stack with other bonuses. Shock Gloves are not the same thing, as they are listed with a unique damage code, not a modifier.
