No, the sprite rolls it's rating in an opposed test.  Thus you're rolling your compiling pool vs. their rating and any net hits are the number of services owed.

I.e. you roll 15 dice, get 5 hits.  The sprite (rating 5) rolls 2 hits.  Thus the 3 net hits means the rating 5 sprite owes you 3 tasks.

Tasks for sprites can be very broad since unlike agents they are smart entities, and unlike spirits are devoted to your service whereas spirits are merely forced to comply.

So a command such as 'search for any information on purchase and sale of data disks' may take several hours, it's still a single command and only takes a single service.  But you must also be aware that unbound sprites only last 8 hours.

Just like spirits, which is why it's almost always a good idea to bind your spirits and register your sprites.

Even with a good registering dice pool, it become exponentially harder to register higher rating sprites, since they resist with rating x 2.  So even with a 12 dice pool you're rolling on luck to successfully register a rating 4 sprite.  If I would give a recommendation I would say keep it to a few (say 3) rating 3 sprites if you must, but compiling a single rating 6 on the fly is typically a better tactic.

And a question I have for theKernel is why did you say threading everytime you compile?  You only roll resonance(attribute)+compiling(skill) to compile sprites, no programs are used in that roll so what do you have to thread?

@cabo

I never got my own matrix search results, is it assumed I find zilch or the same details arknok found?

Horse Trading? Mind clarifying what that is?

And when you say client, do you mean the Johnson, the Johnson's client, or the person sending out the emails?
@cabo_setek
well first you find a horse.... :)

Just kidding I have skills in weapon and vehicle modding and mid level tools.  I was wondering if I could trade work for the hive i need before the nanoware fades away.

I was looking for the man behind the Johnson if there is one.  This feels like a setup to him

@Pyro, oh ya, sorry about that.  Well, I don't doubt you would've hit the threshold on the search, but arnkok pretty much found all the useful intel, at least mission-wise.

@arknok
Well, I'll see about coming up with an equitable trade or service.  As for searching for the client behind Johnson, I'd say that's near impossible at this point.  Not only do you not know anything about the client, you don't even know who the Johnson himself really is.  Without any leads, you don't have a jumping-off point.

I have a suggestion on that for ya, cabo_setek. He could ask him to help him by making a new IC for his computer system.

Hmm.  Well, that could be one thing he could do.  But that seems too little for a 30,000 nuyen implant.  Maybe as a down payment.  ;D

Depends on the rating. Though a high rating IC will take a long arse time to code. For instance a rating 6 IC would be threshold 18 with an interval of 3 months, and that isn't including any programs it loads, if those are coded specially for it. So maybe a bad idea.

Well, nanoware degrades at a rate of 1 point per week.  So the next booster shot you would need depends on the rating of your nanoware.  Nanoware can also degrade by 1 every 3 boxes on your Physical track.  So when you do need a booster shot, the cost will by however much it was at creation.

well then you've got 3 weeks, assuming you don't take any injuries.  How much did it cost, btw?

Went ahead and looked up the cost of the Neocortical nanites for you, cabo_setrek. They're Rating x 5000 nuyen.

Well, 5000 isn't that bad then.  And we'll let it go on that one.  First run and all.  Everyone gets a mulligan.
