Replenishes on good roleplay, critical successes (hard ones) and whenever I say :)
It's the hand of the Gods, a pact with the Devil, an angel on the shoulder. If you use it as a dice booster because you want a few hundred extra nuyen from the Johnson, Lady Luck will get mad at you :)

And someone can point out the section for me, where it is mentioned that you can reroll failures but keep the hits if you spend an edge?

I've seen and continually seeing players around the globe describing it as "rerolling misses" and if they score 2 hits from 14 dice, spend an edge and roll 12 dice again! Players, GM-s, veterans, noobs, they all do this. And I thought there was something wrong with me...

I understand this as poor writing (since you can interpret it in two hugely different ways), and well, you're the GM so you may choose to rule it as you wish, but my interpretation is quite different.
You can read it as "on a single test that did not score a hit", meaning that if the test in question does not score any single hit, only then you may use edge to reroll the entire test.
Or you can read as "all of the dice on a single test that did not score a hit", meaning that any and all of the dice that didn't score a hit on the test could be rerroled.

And really, there's nothing to say that one or the other is the right one... it's just poor writing. The thing with me is that I found really odd that you can only reroll tests using edge if you have achieved no hits on a single test... which usually means you could only use this on some really improbable situations. I don't think this is RAI, but as I said, it's GM's call.

poor interpretation wise
but i second the re-roll misses theory more then the other, meaning that if on a crucial place in the game you have to make a dodge scoring two hits, and you just score one you are disallowed to reroll the dice, seems like mindboggling. even if the roll was made with 18 dice. it still could turn out only 1 hit, so there would be no chance to even re-roll all of the dices by your interpretation, witch is counter to the -2 to re-roll rule, this way the edge loses it's point, it is even more difficult to get the result needed then the other way.

And, for what's sake, why wouldn't they just write up something on the lines of: "You may reroll a single test in which no die achieved a hit." if they meant it? It's clearer and simpler to write and read.

Oh, damn. That is difficult. We would need a linguist here. Every time I read it, it changes meaning. The trick is, where you place the emphasis.
But I'm going to use the "scored no hit" interpretation. Because:
1, If you look here http://forums.shadowrun4.com/index.php?topic=5942.195 Xzylvador tells us that rerolling misses is better in almost every situation then spending edge before the test. And this way, of course, you can spend Edge after you've seen the results.

2, I think this interpretation is the intended one, because we have the "Spend Edge after the test" option, which punishes you, by adding a few dice to your pool and only using the rule of six on those. Now who would use this to get 2-3 extra dice if they can just reroll any die which did not score a hit?

So the "rerolling misses" is better then spending Edge before and definitely better then spending Edge after + you don't have to risk anything, just roll and if it's not good, you do not roll the whole pool again, just the unsuccessful ones. Seems too good to me, much better then the other options.

So in this game, it's only a life-jacket (and I strongly believe they intended it this way) if Invicastle was cruel and you managed to don't even score a single hit on the test, you can reroll it by spending an Edge.

This forces you to think ahead, spend an Edge before and get good results or if you've got bad results by being careful with your Edge, then pay for it because you get only a few more die and need luck to achieve your goal.

This brings back the thrill of the Edge, where you must fret over it, use-don't use, pro-contra, back and forth not just roll and if bad just reroll :)

if you take away the scored no hits parts away then i am ok with it,

had some edge rolls with 1 hit, from dice pool of 15, if it is a for example swimming roll where you need 2 or 3 hits not to drown
reaction not to be thorn in pieces by a LMG
scoring one hit would mean you could not re-roll, even if you are having as large dice-pool as you could almost buy them.

== Description ==
A good looking woman, she normally has long hair done up in current fashions. On runs normally in a simple pony tail. On runs, she often wears loose fitting clothes, a hat, goggles and a respirator to hide herself (together with a spell and some mundane disguise equipment).

== Background ==
Maria was born in East Los Angeles, as daughter of two poor factory workers. While it wasn’t El Fierno and they managed to get by, live in East LA was far removed from the glamour and glitter of Hollywood. Live started to get interesting when she was 13. She was on the bus when she witnessed a stabbing incident. As there were PCC cops close by, the attacker ran away quickly, but not after stabbing his victim in the chest. She had just had some CPR classes at school, she went over the see if she could help. As she tried to stop the blood coming out of the man’s chest, suddenly the wound closed.

It didn’t take long for the arriving medics to figure out what had happened and when they had calmed the young girl down, the police brought her home. Her parents were worried at first when they saw her arriving with the police, but they were quickly reassured. As mages were something every company needed, they quickly saw that this would be the way for their daughter out of the slums. As it was determined after testing that she followed a hermetic tradition, so she was put in a special program at school.

She didn’t find a corporate job, but she did find something else, and that was the trid industry. When she was 15, Melissa Firebird, a mage friend of hers from school brought her in contact with her father who worked for a subsidiary of horizon. At first she only worked there during breaks and week-ends and off-screen, mostly turning people invisible and also healing stunt people when something went wrong. It was a life she really liked and when she was 16, she got her first chance. A mage had fallen ill and they quickly needed a double. As she had about the same physical built, she was asked to stand in. She did so, although under a fake name and this was the start of a career that would last for 5 years. She liked acting and at the end of the year she even got a small role in one of the episodes of Neill the Orc Barbarian.

When in 2069 the earthquakes shook LA, she was out of town to film on location in the PCC. It was a trying time as they couldn’t go back and they didn’t know anything about family left in LA. When they finally were allowed to go back, it took Maria quite some time to find out what had become of her family. Of the seven people (herself included) only two others survived, one brother and one sister. She took them with her and tried to get more acting jobs to make ends meet.

She became known for researching quite a lot for the movies she acted in, even going so far as to learn to fight with a sword and things like that. While she still liked to do some work off-screen, she got her chance in a big production when she was 19. It was a classic fantasy movie with magic and swordfights and even a dragon, and she managed to do very well. She was even nominated for an Oscar for best actress and even though she didn’t win, it was an amazing time for her as Horizon CEO Gary Cline made an appearance at the ceremony.

The next movie she was going to star in was set in Alaska. While they didn’t go there, they did go to the Saskatoon in the Algonkian-Manitou council. While filming she stood too close to an explosion and she had to go to hospital as she couldn’t hear anything and she had vertigo. There they did tests and found she had a punctured eardrum and some inner ear damage as well. The eardrum closed up, but she had a permanent reduction of her hearing. While she could get cyber ears to solve the issue, she decided not to as it would interfere with her magic.

A second blow came a couple of weeks later when she got the news that her sister had gone missing. She went back to LA to search but she couldn’t find her. She was about to give up when she heard from James Dermott, a Seattleite talismonger and friend of her old magic teacher, that her sister had been spotted in Seattle. Immediately she moved there, but by the time she arrived the trail had grown cold again. She decided not to go back to LA and stay in Seattle to search for her sister. Her brother stayed with her and now he was accepted at college on a sports scholarship. While she still looks out for him and he lives with her, he’s mostly independent. She has been in Seattle for a bit over a year now and turned to running the shadows as a means to earn money and also to get information on her sister.

James Dermott: A 45-year old talismonger living near Lake Serene in Everett, he is a friend of Sammy’s old teacher back in LA. He has a small shop and while he makes some things himself, he buys quite a lot from corporations. He knows a lot about magic in all of its forms and he also knows quite a lot of people in the magical scene of Everett and occasionally he gets mages in contact with fixers.

Melissa Firebird: A 21 year old human female, she’s currently at UCLA (currently in her final year of a Bachelor of Magic), while working as a mage off screen in the week-ends and holidays. Her father is VP in a movie studio (a subsidiary of Horizon). She and Sammy were good friends during high school in LA and they still keep regular contact. She knows a lot about the trid and glitterati scene.


lifestyle:
She rents a 100 square metre, 2-bedroom top floor apartment in an old building on 172nd street SW, not far from the junction with 36th avenue W in Everett. It was not in the best of neighbourhoods, but due to the proximity of the Alderwood mall (only 10 minutes on foot) there was some security, as KE patrolled the area around the mall to some extent. She has also spent a bit more on good locks and a decent firewall for the home node. Inside it was cozy with cheap but good furniture and some good AR paint. As she has to pay things for her brother, despite his scholarship, she doesn’t spent that much on going out and stuff, except what’s needed to blend in. She had magic for things like hairdressing and general body care, so she didn’t need to pay for that, which helped a lot.

== Description ==
Gentleman John's appearance is somewhat iconic; you'll never see him without one of his tailor-made suits. There's too much formality in his attire to imply he is a wageslave, he seems more as an executive or a Mafia consigliere - a real Mafia man would be in doubt if Gentleman John is copying them out of respect or in order to mock their style. In fact, both options are wrong; The Gentleman just has an attuned, even if somewhat limited, sense of aesthetics.
Aside from his outfits (which usually are the things that show up the most), The Gentleman is a somewhat "handsome" ork, as much as that is possible. His facial features are strong and sharp, almost violent, but not disproportionate (someone with medical knowledge would probably perceive that he has some corrective cosmetic surgery done). Still, he has touched nothing that would put his orkish heritage in doubt: his pointed lower canines are as visible as ever.

== Background ==
The ork know in the shadows as Gentleman John probably do not remember that well the road that took him to where he is now - and he seem to not care that much about it. Anyway, the fact is that he does not talk about the past, for good or for worse.
Born from human parents (on February 7, 2050, exactly eleven years after the Night of Rage - the stories he heard about the incident left a deep mark on his childhood) and goblinized at an earlier age, the young Mike always thought that his ork characteristics were the reason that maintained his parents stranded. In fact, that was not the case - they were simply too busy and concerned with their work, so much that they even managed to forget family relationships. In order to be praised by them, Mike tried hard to distance himself the most he could from the Ork stereotype. He became skilled in talking to people and understanding what they wanted; he knew how to make they feel good and wanted, even if he needed to lie - without knowing the young work was becoming a little manipulative, since this was the only way he managed to be liked.
Here's the thing: when the story reaches this point, it forks. All information anyone managed to search on him points to to different and imcompatible records, and Gentleman John is not talking about which one, if any, is the true one.
Version A) One day, he never really understanded why, a group of hitman's entered the building where he lived with his father to collect a debt which "had been postponed so much it was REALLY REALLY due time to be paid". The young boy watched as his parents died begging for the debt to be forgiven (which as today he never knew exactly what it was). The killers saw that the boy was not afraid of them, but they couldn't exactly tell what was it that convinced them to take him as a new member of the team and teach them how to be a killer; perhaps it was the way the boy coldly told them that they had no need to make them humilliate themselves if they were kill them anyway, without showing any emotion; they valued cold enough people, they made the most efficient hitmen. From here, the story goes like this: the ork grew up among the guys who killed his fathers (the three hitman went by the handles Huey, Dewey, and Louie), learning from them the art of killing, and eventually becoming better than them in some of it's skills. When he thought he had spend enough time to learn and earn their trust, he killed them all, one by one, with the same coldness that he showed when he saw his parents being murdered. It was his first and last free killing; from them on, he acquire a reputation as a cold and efficient killer.
Version B) Huey, Dewey and Louie really broke into the condo where Mike family lived, but they were not after his parents; they were just collateral damage while they searched for another guy: a Mafia hitman named Just Steve. The thing is that they targeted the wrong man and killed his father, and then his mother since she went screaming. But then Just Steve, who was expecting them, killed the three and found the boy. At first, he found the little ork was shocked by watching his parents dying, and something in what still was left of the hitman soul ring (some say his story as an assassin also started when he watched his parents die in front of him). Motivated God knows from what, he took the boy under his wing, and during the time in which he raised the kid, he taught him how to shot and move without being seen. That is, until the day he just dissapeared, and the boy, now a mature ork, was on his own. As his teacher before him, he never worked for free, and showed up to be almost as skilled as Just Steve (which he believes to be probably deceased).

Regardless of what story is the real one (if any), the truth is that Mike is not so cold as he build his "bussiness name front character", the Gentleman, to be, but that he is afraid of losing control of everything if he let his emotions get into his way; his is hurt enough to be an adversary of the whole world, since this way he cannot be hurt anymore. The only times in which he let the emotions flow freely is when he is under the influence of drugs (which happens quite frequently; they serve as his escape-valves, since he can blame them for his behavior, and not an hypothetical weakness) or when he is savouring music. That's one of his quirks - good music (specially blues) transport him, and he is capable of letting a negotiation go south just because he choose not to pay attention on the Mr. Johnson than on the music.

An ork with a fine aesthetic sense, a cold and calculist hitman, who may serve as the group gunslinger/face/B&E specialist.

About the Appartment:
Mike lives into a cheap appartment on Cascadian Way, next to the junction with Meadow road. The place is not the best in town, but the price is right for what it has to offer; technically, the landlord (a dwarf called Roger Stills) is not the owner of the place, but he has set here for so much time, and people seem to respect his authority. The appartment is clean and confortable, even though a little small. The sound system that Mike putted on seems a little out of place with the rather poor place, but it's his only diversion besides going out to the night-life (which sometimes is just not possible, when it's needed to let the dust settle after a job).

About the Contacts:
Colds (Fixer) - Colds is the man who usually get work orders for The Gentleman. They don't get along that well, but the relationship is profitable for both of them, so they leave it as it is. Colds is a night man if a severe problem with drugs, and he just don't understand someone who can be so sober and bland as The Gentleman being suddenly all the social-guy when in front of a Johnson - so he trust his professionalism and skills, but not the person. Mike feels almost the same about him, since he can't point out what kind of relations Colds have to make the work orders coming...

One-Eyed (Arms and Drugs dealer) - An arms dealer who brags about being able to make any type of boomstick reaches the hands of his buyers with the propper time, even military weaponry (which is a debatable point). Really, an arms dealer who brags about almost everything - his weapons are better, his ammunition is failure-proof, etc. Some guys even say that listening to his bullshit is part of the payment they must endure to buy from him. But when he takes your money, he delivers, and that's enough to Mike. Also, One-Eyed (he has this handle since he choose to not replace a missing eye with a cloned part or with cybernectics - no one can say why, but Mike suspects his body does not accept implants well) sometimes passes along drugs.

Physical Description: Not so tall for an ork, just something about 7 feets, Nina looks almost innocent. She is wearing her tribal tatoos and colours proudly, but without arrogance. The history teaches that pride will have a fall...and Nina doesnt want anything like that happen to her people. The history teaches those who listen. Those who dont...those are condemned to repeat it.
Well there are many of those seconds...and Nina never planned to be an easy prey.

== Background ==
She was always living close to the borders. Watching the sprawling Emerald City down to the coast...dawns, when the Sun first disappeared from the view in poluted clouds above the city...and transforms itself in thousands and millions sparkling lights throught nights. When she was a child, she thought that the Sun fell from the sky at the evening and break itself like a fragile ball to myriads of shining shards...but the sun keep waking again and again on the other side of the mountains...
The same with the people living there. Her grandfather was wise and respected warrior of the tribe, who danced the dance of war with Thunder Tyee. He told her, that not too many city dwellers are honest, brave and clever enought to be allowed to pass throught the tribal woods. Her parents tought her a lot about them...how to track them, how to hunt them down...or how to stay hidden once there is too many of them.
Mother and father...They were both mighty warriors, protecting their people, patrolling the borders, because times were crazy back then and not the month passed without large group of smugglers, desperate squatters or gangers or some hate militias tried to cross the borders and take, what doesnt belong to them. Not that it ever changed.
Once on the patrol they run across the Dead...and the Dead take them. It was the year of the new star...year of the Commet.
When the new star ffades away, a new life began for Nina. Practicing, traiining every single day, she tried to become strong enought to make her ancestors proud. Her grandfather teaches her a lot of things, and under his wise lead she began to learn a lot not just about how to hurt people, but also how to help them. She signed for molitias when she was 14, and after she broke some arms, noses and egos, she became part of regullar border units as a field medic. Investing every fortune into improving herself, she tried to keep the track with gifted warriors...and slowly loosing herself and her bond to the land. With every new augmentation she travels to the Emerald city...and with every piece of ware, returning back to woods was more and more difficult.
Her Grand father was an Elder now, and since she was the only relative to him, she didnt wan`t to cut her ties to him.
When Carnation-Seattle ranch was founded, she saw the oportunity. Talking her way to the right people, she managed to become the part of NAN unit moved to the Carnation and settle down to maintain the tribal order in the tribal land, protecting both the NAN borders and the fragile cultural balance in Carnation territory.
Well things moved forward, and Ninas contract expired. Her grandfather became too old, and she rather have him located here than back in the wilderness, because this was a land of piece for now, and he deserved peace at the end of his life. Yet, for the continuing residence she need to pay. She quickly realizes that her reserves wont last forever, and she tried to find the place when she can use her skills. It wasnt easy search. She began with helping charity shelters, working as a doctor most of the time. She saw it all. Crash zone, Glow City, even plastic jungles at the north. She worked in Supermall for a short time, but this place is no longer the option for her. Finally, she found the place at Everett Naval Hospital. Working there for a small amount of money, rest of her time spent outthere in the urban wilderness, providing help to those who need it, she made more contacts, both Ork underground and Metroplex representatives.
Grandfather was living in safety now, speaking most of time with his old frins and spirits, he is slowly fading out...but he still have his beautifull smile, the sense of humour, wise advice and the trust in his eyes the she is doing well.
Neverthless, resources began to dry, and with only a few months of rent paid, Nina needs to find more lucrative, and maybe also more dangerous work to cover their expenses.
Hopefully, some of her friends would have the right idea..


== Concept ==
"Ive heard the call and Im currious about the rest of it. Im experienced field medic...well I have extensive Salish millitary training and history, so Im capable also of some different tasks. Good with the long shots, capable in the hand to hand combat. Ive paid my price for those capabilities...well it doesnt affected my physical or mental balance, just my relationship to the nature..in the spiritual meaning. There are some weaknesses you should be aware also...Im better with moleculas then with electrons...possibly every teenager would be able to hack my comlink...which is now offline because I got spammed too much on my way here.
As Im trained Salish warrior, it is a question of my personal honour not to take action against civilian population. Corporate targets are the option, only in the case there is strong lead that they are abusing their power to commit the crime. Criminal syndicates, gangs, mercs...those are possible targets of oportunity, if assigned, I prefere to use clear, precise hit, minimizing possibility of collateral damage.
Generally, you could say that I have no problem withu hurting people who hurts people ."

Sometimes some of his mates need a care, sometimes suspects need higher motivation to speak...and that is where her knowledge of chemistry comes handy. Everybody remains silent about those things, well he is not a bad guy, for a cop, and maybe he could pay her back some favours:

First personal IC is up, others are on the way. Feel free to respond, you can do whatever you see fit, handle the NPC reactions as well, just don't do anything serious. Just an average day in your character's life...

Oh, and describe what items you have with you! Keep in mind what is restricted on (or in) you and whether or not you have  license for it. If you want to buy a license, you can do it off-game from your starting money - because the KE presence is started 4 weeks ago, you had time to get one or two.
