Physical Description: Physicaly there is little about Steam to be said that he differs from average dwarf. He is average tall, average built, average looking dwarf. Only his face gives away that his eyes saw more than average Citizen Joe. And that whatever he lived through, part of it sticks with him, affecting his every step from then. Well...at least this is what some romantics would say. Reality is much worse.
And Steam, walking his way down to Aurora every evening, dressed in the long coat that hides most of his body, certainly wont tell more. Untill you ask for something more personal. For example how he got his cyberarm. Then he tell you, that he gets it to make it easier to crack nutshells in the bar...and balls of those with stupid questions.
Personality/backgroundAndreas was born in later thirties, and his childhood in Renton streets was nothing special. As a dwarf, he become target of other children attacks from time to time, wel, again, being the dwarf, he was quite sturdy and he learned how to return punches. During some time, he developed kind of strange habit, protecting those little and weak, and often without the use of physical violence. He knew right people around, and learned quite well not just how tro stay out of trouble, well also how to keep others out of it. Good part of this "education" were also stories told him by his parents about iime he barely remember, about Night of Rage and about some fair cops, who provided safety and protection for a few metahuman families who grew up in the neighborhood. As a kid he had no idea where this stories will eventualy take him.
It wasnt too strange, that at the first legal oportunity he enlisted for the Star. After academy he began his career as a street cop, spent most time in the patrol car with his partner, cruising the streets of Renton, and from time to time even behind the borders of district. The same as before, he managed to stay out of troubles do his job and get some healthy ambitions. He knew the drill on the streets and he managed to keep his shifts calm, always aware of current state of event, who-is-who homework ready when on duty, as he understand the power of matrix and become quite agile when looking for clues. He was quite proud he only had to use his gun as a threat, but almost never for killing. As his informations from streets were accurate and reliable, and helped to solve some significant cases, he applied for detective.
First attempt was just for a test, and as he expected, his appliance was denied. Next time he was much better prepared...and again and again, stubborn and determined, he tried and tried and finaly he succeded. In may 2068 Andreas Boil became detective.
He manages to fulfill assigned goals, cooperating with partners and using his streetwise nature, searching matrix, tried to be a fair cop, not some kind of avenger, despites on what others say about it...as he learned how to put some press on people to find truth. Meanwhile he survived a lot during his career. Crash, insect whitchhunts, cleaning of local UB chapter and so on. He realizes that the nature of the man is just like that. Give him a reason to fear, give him defenseless target, and man would tear it apart, no matter if innocent, no matter if little child, no matter if solid people and respected neghbors before. And such thing happened again. Something was about to happen even before events in 2070 took place. Strange stories, more urban legends, about Otaku, ghosts in the machine and such. Andreas learned to work with facts, but he trusted his instincts and when the shit hit the fun, he was ready. He picked a few families and individuals, who he believe were one of those "Emerged" or technomancers, as the word quickly find its way to the streets after HongKong events. When another witchhunt began, Andreas was quite prepared, having established contact with those involved. And as crowds began to hunt the streets, he was able to arrange transfer of those people to some previously picked safehouses. Andreas promised to stay with those most vulnerable, two families with emerged person...one mother of family, one children in another. With their partners they prepared for worse, and planned to wait until the worst is over. From what Andreas heard about the Night of Rage, he sure didnt want to let something like that happen to those he protected. Well, not only humans were hunting those days. Chaos, anarchy and the stench of blood abd fire...those things always lured creatures from darkness. The safehouse was prepared for attacks of small, random groups of hattred activists, being almost at the Redmont borders, where nobody goes voluntarily. What they werent prepared for was group of ghouls and infected looking for fresh meat. Andreas has only a few memories from that night. gunfire, nightmares all around low ammo count and dead corpses. When it comes fo close combat, there were still some of those beasts alive. And from the point he was biten, he recalls only a darkness. No. Wait. Not just darkness. Something much, much worse.
When he woke up he finds himself on the bed. Small private medical praxis where those who helped to save took him. His right hand was gone, not the pain. Even if immobile and quite unaware of last few days, he knew something is very wrong with him.
And then the Doc came and told him. Told him that he will never ever be the same man again. Told him that despites his effors, amputing the arm didnt stopped the infection. That he is lucky even with that, because it seems that dwarven organism is somehow more sturdy and cannot be affected by this strain. But that it is not sure that the virus will not evolve, mutate into something worse for Andreas. Told him, that he did well, even when taking those people to that place. That one of those man, technomancer`s husband, was taken away, but after Andreas was took down the rest of them managed to kill remaining two infected...including that LoupGarou that bite Andreas. That kid and the woman managed to remove every trace of him from LS system, because he wont be allowed to walk around in his current condition...Lobotomy and laboratories would be the best he can expect from his former employer. Also, before they left for Denver, they managed to get quite impressive sum, so doctor would gladly take care of him, offering a few things for solution, like new appearance etc.
One month later, when Andreas left doctors clinic, he was almost ready to begin again. He moved to Auburn, where nobody knew him, find a few places to stay in touch with current state of events, and began practicing. Housing in Auburn Junction was good, nobody pays special attention to him so he had blended perfectly. His new hand needed a lot of training, and also he needed to get used to the feeling he got kind of silent partner following him on his every step...Death. Once he dodged reapers scythe, well maybe it is only a matter of time when he strike again. Biomonitor, staying on guard for every secondof the rest of his life. And the bomb linked to it.
Almost hear it ticking from time to time. In such moments, he walks the street down to Aurora, took his place in the corner, and tries to silence this tick-tack sound with enought beer. Sometimes it even helps. But maybe it is time to move forward...sitting in the pub, drinking and contemplating about inevitable won`t lead anywhere.
