== Background ==
Viktor Vedel (Vik for friends and family) was born in 2027, a dwarf child to a human family living in Gdanzk, Poland.
Other than his 'race' there was little -no pun intended- remarkable about Viktor. He was a bright child who paid attention to school, listened to his parents and teachers and didn’t get into any real trouble. In a world with rapidly evolving technology he quickly developed an interest in computers, mechanics and electronics. Luckily it appeared he had some talent in this field, building and programming toy robots and cars almost became an obsession. Vik managed to get a scholarship for a technical school specializing in software and technology and even before his graduation he was approached by Gdansk Engineering Works, Armaments & Technology, a company specializing in corporate security and defense contracts. Thrilled by the chance to turn his hobby into a career, he immediately signed the contract which committed him to its service for years to come.
Almost two decades passed. The company had grown larger and larger through partnerships with several other companies and takeovers of those that refused to cooperate.
The larger the company grew, the less Viktor felt at ease there. At first it had been fun. He had all the toys he could dream of and had the freedom to experiment and come up with new and exiting things to play with.
Viktor got his nickname - Wagner - years ago because of the classical music constantly being blown through the speakers in his workplace and because of the reenactment of an old movie scene involving a small army of rotordrones and a couple of gallons of napalm he did while goofing around during the spare time he so often spent with his 'toys' at work.
But each time the company grew, the freedom of its employees shrunk. There wasn't any time for experimenting, goofing around was punished with pay cuts and increased restrictions, everything revolved around budgets and deadlines. Every dull day at work Wagner's one-time passion felt more and more like a burden and after twenty years he was just another zombie working 12 hour shifts, 6 days a week, in a life without fun or meaning.
And then the accident happened. Who or what caused it matters little. What matters is that an ammo stockpile near Wagners garage exploded and caught him in the blast. Suffering from several fractures, internal bleeding, damage to his spine and heavy burns all over his body, Wagner was sent to intensive care for weeks and hospitalized for months.
During that time, Gdansk Engineering Works, Armaments & Technology, whose rapid expansion had put it on the radar of the really big players, was taken over by the humongous European AAA corporation Saeder-Krupp. After a quick review of their newest acquisition the new management considered Technical Assistant-Chief Electronics Viktor Vedel -who had been hospitalized on the company’s costs for a while now and would need to remain there longer- ‘insufficiently productive’, ‘lacking future potential’ and fired Wagner while he was still in recovery. Consequently, Wagner's former corporation was no longer required to pay for the health care bills of his long-term hospitalization.
Out of a job and never having saved any money -everything he'd ever earned was spent on computers and software- Wagner had no choice but to find another way to pay for the health care he still desperately needed. Considering his skills, the solution wasn't hard to find. The first real criminal fact Wagner committed in his life was hacking the hospital's billing system to make sure he got the medical attention he needed for his rehabilitation.
When he was finally fit enough to leave the hospital, Wagner knew his life would never be the same. He realized that, working for the big companies, he he'd been litte more than just another drone to be used as long as it served a purpose and discarded when they were tired of it. He returned to his home, collected anything worth taking -his home had been a second workplace to him and was littered with spare parts of various weapons and drones he'd taken home to work on during his free time, but they'd been just few of the many details that got lost in the S-K's reorganisation after taking over business- and set out to explore a life free of corporate control.
Spoofing a new life was easy and Wagner enjoyed a little bit of luxury for a while, but in the city the sunlight of freedom was always blocked by concrete and corporate logos. He started dreaming of a totally different life, away from the dull grayness that was life in the city.
What better place to look for it than the sunny island called Hawaii?
