An eyebrow raises when Snakebite hears about casualties. Gosh, he even said some casualties during last run. Even though the shadows are relentless and working on them shorten one's life expectancy, that's not the best way of selling a job offer. The guy was blunt as a punch.

Maybe that was for the better. Snakebite couldn't say his last runs went out all right either. Maybe a new team with some bad past would be enough to ensure that everybody would be at least a little bit careful.

The way Snakebite looked at the girl let it clear that he was looking at a girl. Yet, in the shadows, nothing is as it seems, and he was almost sure she was an elf, and in being so, would probably be quite older than he was. Her attitude could mean anything, and he would not drop his guard in the presence of this two strange denizens of the underworld.

"Unfortunately, it turns out you appear to have a level of social skills normally reserved only for rabid, flatulent skunks, so I'm guessing we better not hold our breaths waiting for any kind of politeness or attempt to make a good impression."
She raised her hand to interfere anyone from talking and continued.

"Even more unfortunate is your apparent lack of comprehension of this situation. Even ignoring my own presence -which you appear to have no problems with- you and your negotiating partner here seem to have what we call a difference of mind; which is prerequisite for a contract such as the one you're looking to forge."
She smiled but immediately shushed any attempts to interrupt.
"Luckily, I have a little bit of experience in these things, so why not allow me to demonstrate my own competence by seeing if I can help the two of you reach an arrangement?", she continued, her hands opened in a re-conciliating gesture.

She turned to Snakebite. "You see, John, what you need to understand is that Omar here blames the failure and resulting deaths of a large part of his former team members on everyone but himself. He feels he stands before you as a veteran who's earned his stripes and his right to command in battle, and who's now charged with the responsibility of creating a new, better group with members that have proven to be up to his high standards."

Turning to Omar, she continued her monologue. "What you fail to understand however, Omar, is that from an outsiders point of view, you're not the leader of a 'runner team in search for a new member. In fact, you don't even have a team at all. To Snakebite, you might be considered as both being equals, looking for a partnership.
Only the 'equals' part here is slightly problematic. Because while perhaps Snakebite hasn't showed much to 'prove his competence', he has seen plenty of evidence to doubt yours.
He may be a blank slate, so to speak... But yours is one splattered with pieces of brain and bone and saturated with the blood of your former associates."

She let the image sink on for a second, then finished her short speech. "So first, in order to reach some kind of agreement, you will need to establish some sort of neutral ground on which you can build the foundations of your new partnership. In short, it all boils down to one simple question which John was polite enough not to ask immediately after your rude introduction:
