One of my friends started getting into the rigger books, something none of out group has looked at in quite some time. I personally don't care for the classic rigger archetype of building all kinds of insect, rover, and hover drones and controlling a bunch of them as support for the other runners, but another idea came to me.

How about a combat droid builder and pilot?

I know the Shadowrun world isn't quite to the point of having fully robotized military forces, but I mean there ARE fully functioning human (and humanoid) droids out there. I played around with one before that the GM let me use as essentially an NPC that I commanded to switch active/skillsofts and told what to do, and he cost a fortune but only because I outfitted him with 5 different fully loaded skill groups.

The idea I have here is to make a character whose only purpose is to build, outfit, and then personally control these types of combat droids. Stronger and faster than a human normally would be and able to be loaded to the gills with plenty of equipment. It may be expensive later on, but the benefit is I can start building bigger and better droids than I would be able to upgrade my character physically if I was a weapons specialist, for example.

It's just a concept now, but what say you? All comments welcome!

It basically boils down to "humanoid drones are good, but also really expensive." Aside from the crippled Manservant (which is, in fairness, not actually a bad drone in its niche), the cheapest is 150,000Y, and even if you build it yourself that's not cheap.

If your GM gives loads of cash, this is better, although restricting yourself arbitrarily to one particular type of drone is of course always a bad move.

Your idea sounds like a great prime runner for you team to be working for/fighting against as the centerpiece of a campaign but as starting character you would be talking 30 bp out of the 50 for gear.  Just for the drone and that doesnt include programs you would need to defend against other riggers/hackers.
Whenever I am at a loss for I should do, I ask myself what would Michael Weston do?
