Physical Description: A troll. Wears typical clothing for someone who likes to stay out at night and hang in biker bars - leather jacket, jeans, t-shirts. Wears sunglasses during the day when outside, and never wears them at night. Prefers hiking boots, and will go barefoot before wearing anything else. Always has at least 1 of his pistols holstered on him - more than likely the one under the left arm so he can reach and draw with his right.
Personality/Background: Derek always knew he wanted to be a professional bodyguard, but he never knew he'd be running in the shadows to do it. From an early age, from his first memory of watching the flicks on the vid, he emulated all the old martial arts masters, kicking and chopping at everything within his reach, breaking more things than his foster parents could afford.
When he got older, he began to read everything about security concepts and hostage situations that he could get his hands on. He also fell in love with the look and style of the orient, and he spent many months teaching himself how to read, write, and speak Mandarin Chinese. He began to hang out in seedy pool halls, dirty nightclubs, strip joints, and anywhere else he thought he could learn something about being a bodyguard.
When he turned 21, he heard through a friend of a cousin of a next-door neighbor that a Johnson at a local Chicago bar on the south side was looking for new runners. Needing money and dying for his opportunity, he went and met the guy. Mr. Johnson's client had a simple job - raid an apartment complex and extract a local rat who was supposed to testify against the Chicago mafia and then dump him on the doorstep of local law enforcement. Simple job, or so it seemed. As it turned out, the job was drek from the word go.
Derek made his way into the apartment complex easily enough, but the target was high on some new drug and could barely roll over to take a leak let alone get dressed. Derek wasted far too much time getting this slot-face's clothing on, and the Chicago mafia came in guns blazing just as Derek slung the poor guy over his shoulder. Bastard never saw the bullet that took the left side of his face off coming. Derek, not wanting to be next, ran for the fire escape and jumped - 6 floors into a trash bin. Hurt like hell, but he crawled out and ran.
12 hours later he got a call from Mr. Johnson, telling him how he was fragged. Seemed the rat wasn't a rat after all - he was the kid of a lieutenant in a rival organization, and his death was not happy news. The Chicago mafia was after Derek for being at the scene, and the rival organization wanted Derek for fragging the gig. Derek had to leave, and quickly.
He decided to run to the only place he could think of: Hong Kong. With his ability to speak Chinese, and (hopefully) having learned his lesson, he has somehow been able to stay off the grid and get some jobs. Now he just has to figure out what to do if either - or both - organizations find him.
