Close Combat and Firearms are redundant. Just get Blades & Automatics (also covers machine pistols), and use the 48BP saved for Wired Reflexes 2, a monofilament sword, softcapped Agility and Reaction, and bettee armor.

Lower Strength 1 and get 1 more body. You do the same damage (but loose 1 RC from strength if you use that optional rule) and get 1 more condition monitor and the option of donning more armor.
Do you need Charisma 5? Why not softcap Agility? That is your most import attribute together with body as a samurai.

I would get some more positive qualities. Maybe martial arts and biocompatibility.

I agree that you should drop the two combat skill groups and just go with blades and automatics.
Drop First Aid – You have 3 dices with 2 in logic. Just go with a R6 Medkit.
Lower Skills to 1 or raise them to 4 for better karma efficiency.
I would drop Perception and negotiation to 4 and get either Automatics or Blades at 6 (depending on what you want to be your main combat focus).
I don’t know if you also try to be a secondary face? Maybe you could just get the Influence Group at 1 and then get Tailored Pheromones?
Wait with your specialization until after play. It is only 2 karma, and I think you can use 2 BP better.

Muscle Replacement is kind of expensive on your Essence. Consider Muscle Augmentation and Muscle Toner instead. Generally you should get more cyberware and bioware. I agree Wired Reflexes should be on that list. Maybe also Reaction Enhancers. Synthacardium is real cheap for a +3 to Athletics. Reflex Recorders. A single Cyberarm is cheap and can really boost your abilities (customized and optimized and then a gyromount and some armor om it).

You really need better armor. With a form fitting body armor and maybe a softweaved armor you should be able to triple your armor ratings (with Body 5).

You should modify your weapons to give you better recoil compensation.
Drop the Preador and get a small concealable SMG instead.

You could get better sensory boost by also wearing contacts and some earbuds.
Maybe get either a fast bike or a heavy combat bike – if he is a ganger that would be in character and with a high reaction your can easily drive it around town.

You don’t have any contacts?

For some reason the contacts did not export out.  He actualy has a number of contacts (A fixer, street doc, beat cop, ganger, and a Prostitute/stripper)

Yes I intended him to be a bit of a face as well, a "street guide" is how I explained it to the GM, basicaly he knows a lot of people at the street level, but should not be useful in high society.

I'm not familiar with those qualities, I only have the main book and companion, so might have overlloked them, or might not have the book for them.

I'm thinking I will change the firearm skill, but maybe just drop it to 1, as I feel he should have SOME skill with most guns...Can you "buy up" a skill from a group?

Close combat I think is at least a bit integral to his background however...

Perception can definatly be reduced, that is just habit for me to buy up from other games...

Buy the group to 1 if that fits your concept, then break the group to buy Automatics higher. Some GMs allow it, some dont.

It's actually a rule so GM's should be allowing it no matter what.

If you raise a skill in a group up individually the group is broken and you will have pistols, longarms at 1 and automatics at 2.

SR4A page 270 under "Improving Existing Skills"
Quote
Skill Groups: If a character improves any skill in a skill group
individually instead of improving the group, the remaining skills are
treated as individual skills with individual levels from that point—in
other words, the skill group no longer exists.

Some GMs dont allow it during CharGen because the core book isnt clear on if it has to be done with Karma or not.

Ahh I see what your saying now.  I thought you meant after CharGen not during.

I would have to say no at CharGen.

Ah, my mistake. I assumed access to both Arsenal and Augmentation also.
Lots of great stuff there  ;)

I would also say that you can't break a skill group at chargen. So with the group at one, that would be al your combat skills at one. That is bad.
And it really isn't worth it to take firearms and close combat as skill groups. You want to be good at 1 or 2 types of hurting people instead of being mediocre at huring people in a lot of different ways.

Without Arsenal and Augmentation, I would probably get a cyberarm with a gyromount because that is a really good way to get som recoil compensation. And wirred reflexes plus maybe reaction enhancers. And then get muscle toner and muscle augmentation (Maybe get muscle toner R4 with Restrictead Gear). It is always best to combine cyberware and bioware because you only suffer half essence loss from one of then (often bioware because it is cheaper in essence loss). Is Tailored Pheromones in SR4A then I would get that and lower influence skills.

I don't excactly remember the precise stats for the alpha, but get Gas Vent 3 if not already on it.

And I stand by my attribute shuffle with Body 5 and agility 6 as must have stats  8)

And get the best armor money can buy. If memory serves me well this morning that would be an armored jacket with a helmet for 8/8 (a full body armor is maybe a little over the top for a ganger).

Oh and if you have money to spare get some grenades. You know, when in doubt just throw a nade  ;D

Kind of why I was thinking the main gun I gave him, has recoil compensation at 2, a smart link, and a grenade launcher

It's on my laptop right now, but I am playing around with it ALOT, I did kind of go Specialist crazy on the last build (alot of Urban) to help with the guide aspect, I did get rid of interpersonal but added Persuasion (bargaining) and ettiquerte (street), reduced his firearms down, I really do feel the close combat grouping is a need on him (He should be good with all three)

I am really torn on his cybering up, I did see it as something he would do in time, but at the same time I think by concept as he is starting out it should be low/none.  I should mention my GM tends to be overly generous with how much we get paid for stuff...

How does cyber recoil comps work when the gun already has it?

If you're referring to the cyberarm gyromount on p.344 SR4A, the rules text describes it as a R3 gyro-stabilization system. Assuming you have no negative movement modifiers, that counts as 3 extra points of recoil compensation.

PS: Gyromount recoil compensation does not stack with auto-adjusting weights, bipods, foregrips, slings, tripods, or underbarrel weights. (Arsenal p.148)

Current version, made him more the street guide/street face, with good ganger skills.  I could not bring myself to do cyberwear on him as part of the idea is that he will pick it up as he "becomes" a street Samurai.  I did give him some cybereyes however and a datajack
