>>>>>[Well.  I thought we were past this.  (So did the cashier at the StufferShack too.)  Our run went smoothly, until it was time to get paid.  "Mizz Johnson" shows up late, with three men.  Carat scouts their links and hits their P1.0 profile, wanna-be-shadowrunners.  I'm more professional than these chumps, and you all know how much experience I have under my belt.  I figure that she's brought some security because we're unknowns.  No, no she didn't.  When she saw the target, and they verified that we didn't open the case, she signaled for them to attack.  The Cashier called for the Horizon Hotline to get camera drones out there, but her hired thugs were  out of operation way before they got there.
[Her rigger escaped.  She didn't.  That's a lie, she did, but not from us.  I couldn't leave her to die, I wasn't expecting her to have any real support, so I used a little magical mojo to keep her and her thug that was lucky enough to not be dead when I got to him.  Carat got a "cookie", whatever that is, on the rigger, then wiped the StufferShack's vids of us.  I called the cop who's stuck in my neighborhood, he's a decent enough guy - just need to pay him off on occasion, and he came in for the arrests before the cameras got there.  He gets the credit, we get out alive, and maybe foster some good will between the two of us.
[Blah blah blah, somehow she was able to avoid being booked.  Someone at the station screwed my cop over.  The rigger called her boss, told her that the mission failed, and an hour later, he was dead.  The other guy who was arrested, dead too.  "Mizz Johnson" obviously has a wider network than I had anticipated, and has no issue killing off her employees.
[Now, I'm mad.  Try to kill me, fine, that's part of the game.  But kill the guys that you hired to kill me?  Fuck you, Mizz Johnson.  Dragonslayer and I can agree on this, when I figure out how find you again, you're going down.  If I have to show up at every one of your payment meets to save the lives of the other wanna-be's to save their lives, I will.
[Best part of all this?  Didn't get paid and rent is due the 15th.]<<<<<

>>>>>[All right, getting screwed by a Johnson is part of the biz when you're new. And trust me, you're not past it until you're at the point where you are big enough that people know that screwing with you will bring down the wrath of legends like Kane or Fastjack upon them, or getting a leash put on you by Herr Brackhaus (the real one). Just remember that the second one comes with a rather draconian set of consequences if you fail. Best you can do is get a reputation for being the worst fragger to screw over in the history of the sprawl.

Now, where you screwed up was in letting the Johnson go without getting info on her you could use. Blood/hair samples, for ritual magic. Pictures, for finding her real name. Commlink, for draining whatever accounts she has access to. And so on. If she was good looking, you could always make her star in her very own porn trid (edit your faces out) and use it as blackmail. If she's not your type, there are always people looking for fresh bodies, such as bunraku parlors. That boat's sailed this time, however, but keep it in mind for the future.

Now, if you still have the goods (you should), then there's a small window where you can still get paid something. Find out what is in the case, and then find out who wants it. Bring it to your fixer, and they should be able to negotiate at least something for you. Don't forget the possibility of selling the package back to the corp you hit.

Still need money to make rent? There's always small jobs out there, you just have to know where to look. One of the things you learn as you get more experienced is to develop one or more sidelines, things you can fall back on when runs are slow. For me, it is the escort/bodyguard thing. For a hacker, there's any number of small jobs that need a bit of tech work. They pay like small jobs, but they'll probably take you a couple hours to do, and so on. For muscle, the bodyguard gig, or just playing security at a local watering hole, can be good. Drivers/riggers, look at courier jobs or driving a taxi. There's always people/things needing to get from A to B in a hurry, and people just don't trust the Matrix like they used to for sensitive documents (whether they ever should have in the first place is a matter of opinion).

That not enough? Then there's always the small cons and 'protection' rackets. If you're from a gang history, just fall back on all the things you used to do before 'graduating'. If you have the Talent, and the ability to cast healing magic, then that is pure platinum, especially with the corps cracking down on street docs. Xerena and I both volunteer at the local hospital in Tarislar when we're in town, and the local gangers/syndicates know they can come to me for some healing when I'm in town, though I'll charge them for it. I don't offer long term care, but if they're still breathing when they come in, I can usually keep them that way to the point where they won't be dying (at least not from those wounds). I deal mostly with the Ancients and the Leasa because I'm an elf nobleman from Tir Tairngir who hangs out in Tarislar, but do what works for you.]<<<<<

>>>>>[My favorite side business was always Corporate Leadership Consulting lectures.  Then again, with my service record and my education, finding small companies willing to pay me to tell a few embellished war stories, toss out of sports analogies was always easy, and relate them to the company's current commercial or staffing woes was easy.

The other fallback was always fixing.  I've always had a knack for finding the guy who knows the guy who can get guns, ammunition, armor, surveillance gear and the like for people.  I found that I was better at it than most of the full time fixers working in Manhattan, so I did a little contract shopping work

However, both of those were pretty specialized gigs.  In general, you're better off grabbing yourself a PI license and going to work for an attorney in private practice.  They all need information on people, so whether you're using magic, the matrix, or a lot of walking around asking questions, we're well suited to find that info.  The job tends to pay fairly discretely, and being on good terms with a good lawyer always helps.

One thing to remember with lawyers, though.  Slip them some cred every once in a while as a retainer so that any information you relate to them remains protected under attorney-client privilege.

Now that I think about it, I just might go get my JD.]<<<<<

>>>>>[Like I said, I'm a fairly decent engineer and mechanic, so I'll hit up my fixer and see if he needs any help in the shop.  Sure, its a glorified scrap heap, but so long as you know that you're shit tier, you're good right?
So, we got the case open, the paperwork in it can't be sold back to the corp it came from.  Well, it could, but nuh-uh.  I'm not approaching them with this case.  Just a list of runners and what types of jobs that they've done for the corp.  Everything dates back to 2070, so the corps that they hit won't be too interested.
Still, I can see if anybody on this list is still in the area, maybe make a few friends that way.  Have to be careful on the approach, though.  Its a thought.
Yeah, we got some information on "Mizz Johnson", she works for a small time SecCorp.  We're gonna keep digging and see how deep this drek goes before I go into any more details.  In the meantime, any ideas as to how I can save lives of other runners who would get into my shoes with her?]<<<<<

>>>>>[Its format is <Date><Runner> brought "Research Subject" from <corp>.  Paid <value>.  The dates, and the runners change, the corp is always the same.  Also details on an "apparently abandoned" facility in the PCC.  Passcodes are probably changed, and I'm expecting some new horrible thing to be there.
I thought about selling the list to the corp that they hit, but I can't imagine it would be too valuable.  More valuable would be the labs, right?  Go down there, see if I can find out what happened to those "research subjects" (kidnapped employees I'm sure) and loot the place myself.
I probably shouldn't give out more details than that, right?]<<<<,

>>>>>[Chrona's right. "Research subjects" combined with "Aztechnology" rarely means anything good. If you're very, very lucky, they're just using the poor bastards to see how metahumans react to their latest chemical warfare package. You're probably not that lucky, though. Azzies are big into all the creepiest kinds of magic, so be on your toes. By the way, you said that all the 'research subjects' came from the same corp? Is it one of the big 10? If it is either MCT or Ares, that brings up a whole new set of nasty possibilities. Its bad enough having MCT with their technomancer experiments and Ares with its Hive, but put one of those in the hands of the Azzies...

Yeah, now I need a drink. Chrona, let me know if you need another mage when you go in with him.]<<<<<
