So looking at herolab I see Type O as a quality.  Reading it over it sounds really good, but expensive, was just wondering what others thought of it?

Keep in mind that it's only for basic bioware (not cultured bioware) and that it keeps you from having second-hand implants.

Stuffing yourself so full of basic bioware that you'd need this quality is seriously expensive, even more so since you can't get second-hand bioware at half price.

Had it been for cyberware it would have been godly.
If it hadn't barred you from getting second-hand bioware it might have been good.
As it is, imo, it's too expensive.
If your GM has announced that he'll be throwing enormous amounts of nuyen your way quickly (a 'high level' campaign') it might be worth it... but even then, there's lot of other cool stuff you could do with 30BP.

(Oh, and evil GM's could send Tamanous after you to harvest your valuable organs.)

It's useful, but too pricey - not so much the 30 points, but the opportunity cost of losing 30 points of the 35 in positive qualities that you can get - you can be an adept, or get restricted gear once, but not both; you can't take any adept Ways, etc.  I am mentioning adepts because frankly, having an adept, and being concerned about how much 'ware you can squeeze in 1 or 2 points of Essence, is the only reason to even consider this quality.  For mundanes, it is not as much of a big deal.  Bioware is already Essence-friendly, and most mundanes will have more cyberware than bioware, halving the Essence cost of the bioware.

A better quality, in my opinion, is biocompatibility, a flat 10% discount to Essence cost that can be taken for bioware (all bioware) or cyberware.

I did miss the point that it did not cover cultured ok, nowhere near as cool as I thought it was...

I had it for my first character ever and he rocked. He was just a mundane ork but he was able to get enough money to buy the good stuff. What I got initially was enough to have him be the sole survivor of a run three seperate times. Experiences will vary but I found it to be amazingly helpful. He had bone density augmentation rating 4, Superthyroid gland, and rating 4 in both muscle toner and augmentation in addition to the trauma damper and platelet factories. He was brutal and tough as hell.

If you're a melee adept in a game that doesn't allow either Ways or Martial Arts, it's an OK option. Otherwise it's crap.

If your GM rules this way, it's crap because of the cost, but if ruled as I feel is correct (just not affecting anything Alpha or higher), then it'd be worth it.

The way the terms basic and cultured are used in the main rulebook, the RAW is pretty cut and dried.  Standard is the term used for the grade of augmentation, and basic is the term used for a type of bioware.  If you look at how they use those terms in Augmentation, it is more ambiguous, because they seem to get the two terms confused sometimes.

My reasoning for it encompassing all bio ware is simple. If it only included that one subset (roughly half of the bio implants) it wouldn't cost 30 fraggin points. For those who take that very strict interpretation, they need to reduce the BP cost by at least half.

Not just sometimes. Standard and Basic are used in reverse pretty consistently throughout the whole book.

Except cyberware suites start out "standard", not "basic".  And bioware is "standard bioware" on the heading on page 63, but "basic bioware" on the tables in back.  If they consistently confused them, it would be easy to just swap the terms around to get what they really mean.  As it is, it is used inconsistently enough that you could argue either way with regards to the quality.  The cost alone doesn't convince me about which interpretation is RAW, because SR is riddled with overpriced/underpriced options.  In the end, it comes down to "ask your GM".

Another thing to keep in mind is first aid, medical care, and healing spells are easier the more essence one has-- a side benefit of not sinking one's essence down to 0.02.

I had some Troll Magic Adept with Type O:

Bone Desinity [4] 1.2 --> 0.6 essence
which leaves room for 4 points of muscle augmentation/toner (2 each) which would be 0.8 -->0.4

This is all Basic Bioware and therefore should be as RAW as you can get

It boils down to:
30BP + a shitload of Nuyen + 1Magic Rating
for:
3P Damage, 4points of stats, 4 Points of Body for Soaking purposes only

which is an immense investment and leaves no more room for other qualities (30 Type O and 5 magic Adept is the maximum of 35)

The char was fun to play (high soak pool and distance Strike were primary concern while building the char but back then way of the adept wasn't out)

This is the only build I ever used Type-O for and yes it was fun and no it didn't munchkin that well
(40BP Troll 35 BP Positive Qualities 65BP for Magic 6(5) = 140BP 80k¥ for Bone Density 30k¥ for Muscle Toner & Muscle Augmentation is another 22BP)
200BP for Attributes +  ==> 162 BP for The Adept and Bioware stuff means 38BP for Skills and gear ;)
Speech - Thought - Matrix
Characters: Andy - Andys rolls

dude, that is not the kind of build I would advise making for a starting character. Take Type O and use Mission rewards to load up on bio :)
