I'm having a look at making a few characters to get to know the system and am currently trying to make a smuggler.  I still haven't actually played a game (hopefully in a few weeks) so I'm not sure how effective this character is but anyway

Haven't quite finished yet -  at the moment I'm not still sure about my equipment.  I currently have 32k left to spend (including the 20 from in debt).  My plan is to use the Kull for overwatch, and the Roto-Drone for combat, but it seems like spares would probably be a good idea   Also need to buy a few more miscellaneous things like earbubs, ammo, general electronics, etc.

Well the vehicles and stuff look pretty cool. Seems odd to have a really high charisma and then really poor social skills. Might be worth putting another level or two into the social group if you want to run as a face type.

Worth grabbing a backup weapon or two, some more recoil mods (folding stock and personalized grips are cheap options for pistols)
Some more subtle armour would be good, maybe a suit and some ffba to go under clothing to cater for diff types of clients.
Would be worth putting a few more points into contacts as well. Id imagine that a smuggler needs lots of contacts on both the supply and demand ends to make a good living really

Ypu'll also need a non-standard wireless link to make your network harder to find, and IC or an agent with attack program loaded for defense if you do get hacked. Some eccm would work nicely to prevent jamming attempts. You'll need a dummy commlink to run a fake sin on so you dont get pinged walking about town.

Yeah, not quite sure what I was thinking there.  I remember there being a reason for it, but can't quite remember what it was...

I've had another play with this.  The idea I was going for is a smuggler who normally talks her way past checkpoints, but also has the ability to run away, or shoot up those chasing her (or at least discourage them from chasing her further with a few full auto bursts of explosive rounds from a light machine gun in front of their cars).  For negative qualities, I was thinking that she had a recent run in with a group of metahuman traffickers (maybe they were trying to use the same route or something), and the resulting fight resulted in her freeing their captives, but losing her own cargo in the process, hence the In Debt (to her supplier) and the price on her head from the group she attacked

During runs, my plan is to slave my main vehicle (either Bike or Van) and the drones to my commlink and run the Tacnet. Just myself, one of the vehicles and the C D Dalmatian should be enough for it to work I think, but the others should be able to be included as well IIRC.

I have however just realised that I forgot to take any form of IC for her commlink, so even if she does spot someone hacking in there's nothing she can do about it.  I'll have to move things around again to fit an IC in...

Also, the lack of Anthroform Pilot skills is intentional - the microdrone is basically for 'watch my body while I'm in VR'.  It will probably be one of the earlier skills I would pick up once in game though, along with some hacking skills...

looks better.
there are a few things in there like using shotguns with only a skill of 1, lenses with smartlink but no image link.
a lot of logic linked skills are at skill 1, which gives you a very small dice pool.
might be worth just going over it and focussing it a little.

Yeah, I think you're right about needing focussing more.  Since I am a terrible mechanic anyway, I may as well drop the group entirely and use the points for a Mechanic contact instead.  This will also let me drop the 2x shops for more ¥ and leave some points for boosting another skill.   I can also drop a couple more one point skills (longarms, and maybe intimidate to free up more BP) as these will be fairly cheap with karma anyway. Will have a look tonight.

EDIT: Boosted perception with the freed up points, added an IC with Attack and Stealth programs.  Also, raised the rating of a couple of programs and added Chamelon coating and a small amount of Armor to my combat drone.  Not entirely sure if raising it from 2 to 4 is a worthwhile use of 800c but anyway.  Was considering dropping the Electronics group, but I really wanted to keep Computer and Data Search even if the dice pools are terrible...
