There is this brief, somewhat ague entry in Arsenal about something called operations cleanup tools. Problem is, it gives no description for what they could even be. Is anything about this explained somewhere else? I can't let a character in my game use a piece of gear that I can't even form a mental picture of what it even is or does.

Usage of cleanup tools adds a dice pool modifier to any Success Tests to hide the presence of criminal activity, as per the ToolModifierstable(p.61).Clean up tools are categorized by size as kits, shops, and facilities, and they follow the same rules for tools as listed on p. 323 of SR4."  - Arsenal, pg. 63

Pretty much. Also wood-putty, some 'universal match' scratch filler, and other such things.

In more advanced cases considering 2074, there would be nanite sprays that absorb and clean and remove traces as far as the nanogram scale, eating particulates and chemicals whilst releasing payloads of cleaning agents in order to further wipe out any sort of activity. Potentially expensive but worth its weight in nuyen.

Fully-automatic grenade launcher loaded with gas grenades full of Cleaner-Cleaner.

Police your brass and spent grenades.

Or better yet, don't have brass. Use caseless ammo.

Don't see why not (all firearms can be modded for Electronic Firing, which requires you use caseless ammo), though the grenade itself will leave debris.

Not nearly as readily identifiable, though. If I recall correctly, 20mm grenades don't have rifling or other identifying marks.

Serial numbers from the batch, but those are easily enough dealt with.
