I've been running a "generations" game, beginning in 2050 with months and years between sessions in game time, representing the characters randomly getting hired together. Coincidentally, these occassions are important sections of the timeline. After reading a short story about the Last Liferock,  I've decided to use single Obsidimen appearances as part of the over-arching, 20+ year plot.

The characters' first Obsidimen encounter was under DC, where an Ares subsidiary had been hiding a Liferock and single Toxic Shaman Obsidiman. During the riots after Dunk's assassination, the Obsidiman managed to overtake his jailers and try to "ReName" the Liferock to make only Toxics (utilizing a mana line the Rock is on and background count caused by the riots and Dunk's death). Sensing the ritual, Harley hastily dispatches the team while he does whatever the hell he does in canon at that time.

Two questions: Would 2050s Mana levels be high enough for "ReNaming" rituals? It ended up a moot point, but perhaps I could use the incomplete ritual's effects as a further plot device.

What other NPCs and Corps do you think would swiftly become aware of awakening LifeRocks and become embroiled in schemes surrounding them?

1) Doubtful, unless they had an artifact or something to help power the ritual. Of course, by placing it under DC when one of the most powerful artifacts is in town and Ghostwalker goes through the rift and uses incredibly powerful magic to seal it shut, causing a huge magical hangover for everyone in town... Who knows what may have happened during the ritual? >:)

2) Most of them. But the biggies would be Draco Foundation, Saeder-Krup, and Aztechnology. Not too mention the dragons and immortal elves. Heck, if Liferocks are becoming active, they could take a huge part of dragon civil war that is brewing, plus Harlequin knows of the DC one in your game and he's about to go to war against Ghostwalker with Aztechnology as an ally.

Thanks FastJack. I kind of figured the first point, that's why I set it when I did.

So, DIMR (who apparently has a sleeping one in canon?), I already let Ares know sbout them but not know what they are.

What use would the Azzies actually get out of one? For dormsnt Rocks, I understand asset denial, but for Awakened ones I'm not sure how it fits into their sects' overall schemes. Unless you can use Sacrifice blood magics on the former/potential Obsidimen inside, because that would be a terrifying prospect.

I see SK and Lofwyr potentially butting heads with Sea Dragon, since there's rumoured to be a tribe near her lair, apparently. They could be neutral, or they could be under her protection/dominion, or maybe another power has gotten to them and they're keeping tabs on her.

The Liferock is alive in a way, especially because it probably contains all the Obsidimen joined with it at the time in Dreaming. During the Age of Legends the Theran Behemoth 'Triumph' landed on the Ayodhya Liferock, and the Therans used it to fuel the flying fortress*. I'd say a Liferock could be used instead of a dragon (remember those hints in Atzlan?) to summon an immensely powerful Blood Spirit. If the Liferocks still contain their Obsidimen sleeping through the downtime (and why shouldn't they), that would be like sacrificing a powerful elemental spirit along with multiple (some prominent Liferocks had as many as two hundred Obsidimen, most of them had hundreds of years of experence, and almost everyone of them was an Adept - in the ED sense of the term, IIRC), also powerful, living and highly magical entities.

I'd say almost every power or society that has anything to do with magic would take interest in the liferock. As an unknown asset, if they don't know what it is, or as a very, very huge cache of knowledge, if they do (so either they would want to exploit, or deny access to it). Dragons had Obsidimen and their Liferocks in high regard, for obvious reasons, and trolls felt a deep connection with them, to the point or settling in areas near Liferocks, because the company of obsidimen and vicinity of their birthplace made them feel happier and 'serene'.

Corrupted Liferocks were also known, but their corruption was caused by Horrors. There is a way of cleansing it (or at least it's Brotherhood), but the place in which it happened is somewhere in Barsaive.

* Which ultimately caused most of the Obsidimen to rally behind these from the Ayodhya Brotherhood who weren't present at the Liferock, and form the so-called "Liferock Rebellion". I didn't read the outcome, not wanting to spoil the fun of our ED game, but I'm sure they kicked a lot of theran ass for a long, long time. :P
