I think the rule is good, but my group has the interpretation that ALL hits are used to stage it up.  This is what I take issue with, if I roll well with 15+ dice I might as well make a new character.  If I can choose, to hold back some hits, that's fine.  I'm supposed to talk to my gm this weekend, and I'll clarify this.
