I was considering using a cyberzombie as a reoccuring enemy in a game I am GMing, so I was looking over the rules. I notice that they have a magic attribute of one, which if reduced kill the cyberzombie instantly. Is there anything preventing a pc from casting a f 1 mana static spell and killing instantly?
ps taking into account the background count of the zombie a spellcaster would need m 5 to cast it, which is a normal starting pc magic
Also as a side note I dont see anything that says that he is immune to his own background count.

Background counts and mana static doesn't actually reduce the magic rating. It reduces the effective magic rating. Cyberzombie doesn't die unless someone manages to reduce his actual magic rating. And good luck with that.

"due to the cybermantic rituals, the cyberzombie does not suffer magic loss from implantation, but if the magic attribute is ever reduced to 0 by other means, the cyberzombie dies." Pg 157 augmentation
"... In game terms background count reduces a character's magic attribute by its absolute value." Pg 118 street magic
From my reading of the rules magic is reduced for all purposes and, effectively or otherwise, this would kill the cyber zombie. If im missing anything, let me know.

Cyberzombies are already hanging out in a background count of -4, so you'd actually need a force 5 mana static (and 5 hits) to create a "bigger" background count and kill them. There are much simpler ways to defeat a cyberzombie, such as taking advantage of the fact that they are dual-natured but have no ranged astral attacks.

Cyberzombies have never been meant to be indipendant or lone threats. They are not singular villians terrorizing the party. They are generally the centerpiece of a larger organizations response and will be deployed accordingly.

Putting it this way, a cyberzombie is a Aircract Carrier, they are powerful but they always have an escort to deal with threats. That's why no one should ever be deploying a cyber zombie without some form of counter spelling support.

Having said that honestly you shouldn't be able to kill a cyber zombie by reducing their magic to 0. It's just a bad rule and opens exploitation/headaches that likely shouldn't exist. I would just ignore it.

UramoVI, I was under the impression that background count reduced the casters magic rather than the spell or hits if the spell is in the area with the background count when cast. If thats true, you only need to have a magic of 5 to cast it at force 1.

Rather than ignoring the rule entirely, I was considering an arbitrary magic boost to 7 as this would require a mana void or storm to kill him.

You didn't read far enough. On the same page (emphasis added):

In effect, the cyberzombie becomes a domain in her own
right, tainting astral space around her wherever she goes. This astral
haze affects all attempts to cast magic on, at, or in the vicinity of
the cyberzombie. Whatever the ambient mana conditions are, the
cyberzombie always stands at the heart of a Rating 4 background
count
(see p. 117, Street Magic) that extends a number of meters
from her body equal to her total negative Essence. If she remains
in one place for long, that background count will expand at the
rate of about a meter in every direction every two or three hours.

So neither mana static, nor a mana void, nor a mana storm would do jack to a cyberzombie.

However, UmaroVI is right, being Dual Natured is the cyberzombie's real source of vulnerability. And it's a massive vulnerability.

If you have a cyber zombie coming after you, you have a bigger problem then just the zombie!

It means you have pissed off someone who can afford to sic a multi million neuyen death machine on you! If this happens to you or your group, you know one of several things happened:

A: your GM hates you.

B: your GM wants to kill you.

C: you f**ked up in a stupendous way!

D: it's a combination of A, B, C

E: your GM has run out of ideas/threats to throw at you.
Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Remember: You can't fix Stupid. But you can beat on it with a 2x4 until it smartens up! Or dies.

I think that's covered by "C". ;D
