Hi there

I was wondering if anyone knew how effective bladed combat can be? I was hoping to avoid making a troll character but could an elf or an orc adept be good in bladed combat?

I've played a blades focused street-sam, and I will tell you it can be rough. He was an orc and the way I went about it was focusing on Running and Reaction (and BOD/armor :P) - Running to close distance quick and Reaction for the passive defense (which combined with running, and being in melee, can be quite effective). But the catch is, seems like the only thing that scares someone more than a Mage is someone running at them with a sword. Something visceral in people just says, I better deal with this - now. i.e. You will become the focus of fire quickly after chopping down a couple of your opponents buddies and they can see they are next in line. It's fun, and rewarding and even effective because it mixes things up - gives opponents a lot to think about if your group has all the other angles covered, but you're going to get shot... a lot, and all it takes is a glitch to end your day in a bad way. Which can be said for anyone, but seems like it was especially true with my razor-boy.

And if you're truly doing 300 BP builds, it's gonna be extremely rough as an Adept if you guys have a 150 BP Attribute limit... I really don't see how 300 BP builds would be fun, you have worse stats than the "average Joe", but to each there own and I realize this isn't what this thread is about - just know you mentioned it in your first post in the Archive of Adepts thread...

It can be effective but it requires some finesse. emsquared gave good advice. I would also advise a good Infiltration dice pool and perhaps some inline skates could be useful for those times when you have time to prepare. Since you only get 1 attack per IP, using Edge on the attack is a way to decrease the chance of accomplishing nothing on your turn. Don't forget to add a personalized grip to your weapon, too.

There is in fact a modifier for making multiple attacks. That is, if you make 2 seperate attacks, you SPLIT the dice pool and -2 for each additional target. Couldn't you take Blades(dual wield) and then just split your normal dice(Specialization is actually a dp mod)

My main concern was the fact that you lose a lot of the protection of being able to hide behind a wall and spray bullets at people, that and the fact that by the rules your opponents have a lot more chance to protect themselves from your attack

as for the 300bp, its because he wants this to be a very much starting campaign for some of the newer (bearing in mind im quite new myself) players though he is from what he has said planning on being fairly generous with karma for people to advance quickly, just giving us more of a feel of that development from your characters first run and being a small fish in a VERY big pond to working your way up.  (im currently pushing him more towards 350 range but we will see how that goes)

The main thing that concerns me is whether I will be able to cut people down fairly effectively, will i be able to kill them as well as the people packing their Ares Preds or will I be the guy hacking up one goon all combat while everyone else is gunning people down left right and center?

Its not that I think that combat is the be all and end all, but I want him to be able to make a decent showing of himself in combat while balancing that while also being a bit of a B&E character

Like I said, you are going to get shot. And it will hurt. But, as long as you focus on your blade skill appropriately (maybe a pre-reach 12 or 13+ dice in your blades pool for a 300 BP build?) and your GM scales your opposition to your group's power - i.e. down, you should have no problems chopping a guy down in 1 IP. In my experience, most guys will just try and shoot you point blank, until your GM throws in that melee specialist now and then so you can have that "Ahh, a fellow chucker, eh?" moment, so they won't defend, and with Impact armor generally being worse than Ballistic, and a little tactical strategery, it can absolutely be effective.

I should have mentioned my orc was SURGEd and had satyr legs... so yeah, Shadowjack has a good point, some sort of base speed boost is a good idea.

You're kind of taking what I said out of context. Yes, you can attack multiple targets if they're very close to each other. In most cases you will probably not get to do so, and even when you do, splitting your dice pool can be risky against certain combatants. The typical melee action is to strike one target :)

I think you'll be fine, tblader. If you don't have a lot of bp to work with, Ork might be the best choice for you. Cheap race cost, good strength, strong body, both which will be quite valuable to you.

An adept focused on melee combat can be quite effective in that role. Powers I would recommend are: Combat Sense, Improved Reflexes (no more than level 2), Mystic Armor, Counterstrike, and Quick Draw. Mix and match with others as you see fit. Obviously, you won't be able to afford all of these, but they're some good suggestions. If your team has a mage with Increase Reflexes, then ditching the adept power for Living Focus is a big boost.

Skill-wise, Blades (with a specialty), Pistols (semi-auto specialty), Gymnastics, other physical skills as desired, First Aid, one pilot skill. Anything else is cake.

Gear-wise, a weapon focus (I like the katana for aesthetic reasons), multiple other blades (including concealed blades and forearm snap-blades. You don't want to lose out on your primary means of attack, yeah?), 2 pistols with enough RC you don't take penalties (One loaded with SnS, one with ExEx or APDS. A Sakura Fubuki is good for the SnS one, and the Predator or Praetorian works well for the lethal one), grenades (Flash-bang and Smoke, but also lethal or gas if you want), Armor to max unencumbered on both B/I if you can, goggles/glasses with vision mods to taste, everything else is cake.

Of course, that is just how I would do it. YMMV.

If you are going straight adept, good ware investments include Synaptic Boosters, Synthcardium (for Gymnastics dodge), Muscle Toner and maybe Muscle Augmentation.

Point being to focus your PP on things like Combat Sense and Improved Ability while ignoring overpriced options like Increased Reflexes and Improved Attributes. You don't want to lose more than 2 Essence though.

ProTip: Always remember that this is Shadowrun and not AD&D or some other class-based system.  Even if you're a <Insert Combat Style> Character here, always try to free up the point or eight necessary to take a combat skill of another style at a 2.  Blade Adept, great - like Mirikon said, pick up Pistols.  This lets you engage without needing to do something stupid (like run out from behind cover, waving your weapon until you manage to get down to them), and yet will allow you to still do your great damage in the close, nasty combat that you'll eventually get a chance to get into.

Other ProTip: By making an <Insert Combat Style> Character, you're defining your role.  Have fun with it, but don't seek to make that role dominate the game.  Let other people have their moment in the sun too.

Every melee character should have some kind of ranged skill.  Melee is a niche role, albeit a useful one.

Indeed. Even for my combat mage focused on melee combat who primarily uses spells for ranged attacks, I still have a 1(+2) in Pistols (Semi-automatics). For one thing, a pistol with SnS and one with ExEx costs less than having both Stunbolt and Manabolt. Plus, there are times (high background counts, mana ebbs, space, etc.) where using magic is not exactly easy. Plus, having a gun helps keep people from leaping to the assumption that you're a mage, and geeking you first.

Overall, blade combat adepts are cheaper than unarmed ones (no need for killing hands/critical strike), although they need to get a weapon focus if they want to be effective against things such as spirits.  The big question is whether your GM allows the martial arts rules, because the optimal choice for an adept is to get the two-weapon style manuever, which is ludicrously good.

It's also a decent idea to maximize your reach. A Fomori with the metagenetic Quality that gives even more reach plus a combat axe or nodachi works quite well on that front. If you prefer not to go troll, a satyr with celerity and the reach quality gets you fast movement and reach 2.

See if this helps you any (it's not such a low BP total, in fact it's using the 750 karma generation), but it may still help.
