"Which means someone would have to play the investor, and none of us remotely looks the part.  Plus, I'm trying to keep people from asking questions.  If the cover ties back to the movie, they're less likely to consider any followup questions.  It's not just a matter of explaining security - it's a matter of who in the group it would be security for.  So unless we want to spin a line about one of us having been targeted for extraction...  But that's only really useful if we want to create a target and draw someone in.  Otherwise it simply draws too much attention of the wrong sort.  And, frankly, I'd rather leave complicated cons like that to Torley - I got the impression its his specialty.  I've always had a way with people when I wanted to, but I'm no expert in the area.  Leads me to ask the same questions about you, though."

"If someone asks, how about we tell them to mind their own business and frag off" asked Clementine. She wasn't familiar nor comfortable with people asking too many questions about her or her past, which could made things complicated in a small town like Yakima.

"Largely because that would have the exact opposite effect to what we want.  If you refuse to answer questions - and especially if you become aggressive or defensive about it - it makes people think you have something to hide.".

"Okay, I think I can work with that...  Set armorer and 'realism' consultant...  From your earlier comments I took the impression that you're aug'd up, too - how much of a change to your aura do I need to get people not to question?  Know enough to seem like ex-Star or KE on the surface at least?"  Fionn was offering Clem a bit of an olive branch, asking very vague questions and implicit explanations for why he was asking the question.

"Could probably sell the idea that Icarus is Samantha's assistant or something...  Work for you, mate?  Do keep in mind you'd have to keep the image up until we left Yakima."

"I'm not all natural, however I have nothing electronic on me as you already know. I can pull off the ex-KE type for a short while but I'm not an actress. The more you make me talk, the less believable the illusion will be" answered Clem.

"Nothing that broadcasts, at least - but that's all I'd be able to tell.  Someone with the Sight, however, could tell how much you've got in you, maybe even where it is...  Or at least that's my understanding.  I don't want everything to unravel if someone does Look us over, which is why I'm worrying about what I have to account for.  And don't worry, I wasn't planning on you talking any more than you absolutely have to - it's perfectly clear that's a bad plan."

"No problem," Sammy said as she signed the picture, "say, do you know where the rest of the bunch went?"
"Not really, they haven't come back through since you all left, and you two were the last ones, don't you have their comms?"

"Yes, but we left our commlinks in the car," Sammy said, "I'm terrible that way.  I would forget my own head if it wasn't screwed on."
She made it sound like one of those 'famous people things'.

"Gotta be ready when the Ruskies come!"  Nick said conspiritorially looking serious, then laughed "Actually, that was the reason my grandad did this in the first place.  Me?  I just like the toys, and this is how I get to play."

Johnny chuckled "So your grandfather built this place, huh? Johnny  looked around appreciatively. He looked down at a pistol on the table and seemed to have a thought  " Hey do you know if there's a practice range around? If I' going to be putting guns into the hands of actors I'm gonna need them certified and familiar with using firearms ASAP. Even though we aren't using live rounds safety is always my number one concern."

"Hell son, we can go out on the back porch and start shooting if you want to.  If you folks decide to set-up out here I suppose we could find someplace to practice, official-like."  Nick waves his arm to indicate the area, "Gramps built the house, we been steadily building it up and keeping it SOTA since then.  It was touch and go there for a few years, what with all the hoodoo and dragons and elves and such, we just kind of hunkered down an rode it out.  But the redskins are good folks and we got a little Snohomish blood in the tree so it shook out for us."

Sam started talking faster, as if, having decided to trust his secret to the sheriff, he wanted to say it all before he lost his courage. "Back sixty, seventy years ago, there were a fair number of things called "reality shows". They were huge. People watched them constantly. Didn't seem to matter how hokey the premise, how low the production values were...people watched them. My boss thinks we could tap into that. You know, make a reality trid. And his idea...well, it's a survival-of-the-fittest gig, you know? Take a group of city people and put them out in the wilderness with as little as possible. Maybe not even the clothes on their backs, if we can get away with that. Then see if they can make it home, whether they're willing to break the law to do so, will they work together as a group or fall to infighting...and film it all with hidden camera drones. Maybe even broadcast it live, let people vote on who's going to make it, you know?"

"Thing is, my boss wants me to make sure that our...contestants...can actually pull this off. Which is the real reason for this scouting trip. The trid Ms. Delavine thinks we're going to do? Well, it might happen--we've got an early script that we've shown her--but we couldn't afford to do it right now. Not unless this survival show works out the way we need it to. So, I'm looking around, and I'm getting nervous. If normal people out here are this scared of something--" he gestured at the security again, "--well, I need to know what that is, and figure out if it's going to kill our contestants. Or worse the show. I mean, we expect a certain amount of challenge from wild animals, sure, but are people out here so scared and mistrustful of strangers that they wouldn't be able to get help? Or is there a corporation doing something shady out here that our people might run afoul of? We weren't figuring on anyone getting shot at unless they tried to steal what they needed or tried to sneak across the border or something else equally stupid...but if they could get shot just for going to a random house to ask for help, well..." Sam's courage finally left him, and he broke off, not looking at anything in particular.

“Well, I can assure you that I don’t see anyone getting shot off a doorstep just for showing up, though if you strip down some troll banger from the barrens to his birthday suit and set him loose around here I can’t see people welcoming him into their home with a blanket and a cup of coffee. “  John grinned at his joke, “I guess this would be a good place to try that kinda thing, the mountains if the Nations are about as low-tech as anywhere gets anymore.  I assume you are going to get all the permits you need from Council Island and what not.  I don’t think the concerns you mention are going to be a problem, I would be worried about the bloodbath you are going to be in for the first time they stumble across some wolves or a bear, or some paracritter.”

The Amerind thinks it over a bit as he walked, “The logistics of it shouldn’t be your concern though, the contestants are your problem.  Unless it is somehow against the rules to have someone just walk in and say they need help, I mean it’s not like you are going to use SINless for this show, if they are on the Net I can’t imagine we wouldn’t try to get them home, might ask a few questions, but we would get them there.  Had a runaway do that last year, no clue how she got here, but she walked into the station and said she was from MCT in Seattle and could we get her home.  Then you got the ones with The Talent, they could seem like they were bedding down and then go astral and get in touch with all their buddies back home to help them out, I mean everybody’s got friends, right?”  He walks along a bit before looking around again.

“Tell you this much though, it sure would be funny as hell to see some pinkskin cityfolk running around the woods, you might have a hit in the NAN at least.”  John grins again.

"I suppose if nothing else, 'represents a private inerest' is the sort of thing that keeps people from asking questions, and doesn't give them enough to notice any discrepencies.  Let's make with the scouting.". Fionn exited the vehicle.

“Tell you this much though, it sure would be funny as hell to see some pinkskin cityfolk running around the woods, you might have a hit in the NAN at least.”  John grins again.

Sam chuckled appreciatively at the sheriff's jokes, then said, "Of course we'll have rules and counters in place to make sure that they can't just comm up a buddy to come get them; can't imagine that anyone would want to watch that. Show'd be over before it began...and so would the company." He shook his head, then continued. "Stopping them from taking the easy way out is easy. I can't tell you the details, but my boss...well, he's got plans for making it so the contestants don't want to go the easy way. Set the situation up right, control the incentives, and everything else follows, you know? I mean, anyone came to you direct, said 'hi, I'm from Seattle, can you help me get home?', well, you're the sheriff; of course you'd get them there. But we can't have that, so we'll make sure they don't want to come near you. We wouldn't do anything illegal, of course, but if they think...well, let's just say they'll want to avoid drawing attention to themselves, and leave it there." He smiled conspiratorially at the sheriff.

"So, that's my problem--I gotta figure out how a group of people who don't want to ask for help, but who don't have much of anything, might be able to get out of here. Now, we could set up some false 'locals' that would help in a controlled manner once certain criteria are met, but I'm sure half the audience would see through that sort of gimmick before the credits rolled. So all the time we've been touring towns out here, I've been racking my brains out, trying to figure how someone with nothing could get food, gear, and transportation to get themselves back to the city--all while playing up to Ms. Delavine's belief that we're scouting locations for her trid. And I gotta tell you, I'm getting kind of desperate--if I don't give my boss a couple of damn good ideas, well..." He coughed nervously.

"Let's take this base, now. How long has it been abandoned? Any chance there's some old vehicles that'd still run tucked away somewhere?"
