Title: Johnson looking for a new crew. (PbP)
Post by: ismilealot on <04-07-14/0846:57>
You chummers look hungry. Hungry enough to take a new job? I've got a Johnson that needs an extraction, and needs it bad. Money's good enough for me to eye a crew I've only heard a few rumors on. But, the way I see it, if there are to many rumors either the crew is sloppy, or the noise is being put out there by someone that wants them noticed. Either way, they're not what I need. So I'm willing to take a chance on a new crew, at least new to me. If you're interested you can meet me at the Soycaf bar on 3rd. I'll be wear'n the obnoxious trilby. I don't want a word from you on the job. If you're in you'll lift my SIN and use it to buy yourselves a soycaf. Then follow me out. You're good enough to do that, then maybe you can get this job done.

Hello :)  I've only run a few games of SR, and I've never played SR. I DM 4 different games of D&D 4e, but, reading the SR material got me very excited to play this game. But, tbh, I work to much and DM to many games to do anything more than a PbP. So, if you're willing to run with a greenhorn Johnson than I'm your girl. Game would be 5e. Standard character creation rules. Yes, you will absolutely need a face because I run extremely heavy RP games. If your character can only grunt and shoot you're going to end up with not much to do for 90% of the game. However, you can add/throw bloody near any curve ball at me and I'm not just good I was born to run with it. If you want in I need a backstory by April 22nd and a character sheet by April 25th. I'll take 6 players and 2 alternates. Don't bother covering your bases because I can craft around anything. I'd rather have players playing what they enjoy and are really excited to play than just covering a role. That said, I will need a face and a decker, and all 6 of you need imaginations, and the time for 2-4 posts/week. I encourage character-character posts and I can handle the party splitting up to handle different jobs at the same time. I've got an Obsidian Portal account and plan on handling that via 2 forums so that players can concentrate on their groups tasks.

I'd like to get in this. And I'll take the face.

I'd like to be the Decker/hacker. I haven't decided on technomancer or mundane yet. I may even go crazy hacker/mage. Whatever it is, I promise to have a compelling background story.  8)   Do you feel like spilling the beans on whether the environment will be typical urban sprawl or something different?

I am posting here to express my interest. I will either play an Adept or a Mage. Leaning towards Adept. Sword Adept. Guns are for sissies.

I'd like to jump in with a mage if there is still room.

any room left ?

Ok, hats tossed into the ring so far are:

1.) ShadoWarrior - Face
2.) Triskavanski - ?
3.) Joe15552 - Decker or Technomancer
4.) The DarkMessiah Adept or Mage
5.) Jim - Mage
6.) Ericen - human rigger  Anatar "Shade" Shadowstar (character and backstory already submitted. Obviously this chummer needs a paydate bad.)

Alternates
1.) Celtibero - ?
2.) Bewilderbeast
3.) DaGob

The group isn't final until I've ok'd your backstories, and if I don't have that by the deadline I drop you, no appeals. Same goes for the character sheet. There are several good ones online and you can send it as a pdf or put it in dropbox, and send me a link.  (If you don't have dropbox let me know and I'll send you a link, we'll both get a tad more space that way.) If at all possible I'd like a realtime meet with the party via Skype, Teamspeak, or RPGTO. That's so that we can flesh out how you know each other and you can discuss with me what you want from the game. Once I've ok'd backstories and have a final roster I'll post a few times that I'm avail. and get a consensus from that. If you can make it great, but as this is a PbP game attendance at that meet is not required. We'll use Obsidian Portal to track session progression, NPC's and miscellaneous info & rolz.org for die rolls unless someone has a better suggestion. Faster you chummers gear up, the faster I can fix this meet. My Johnson ain't payin' for my squat time. See you in Denver 2075.

I missed the initial sign-up, but I'd be happy to take another alternate spot. I have close to a dozen characters made up, so in the event somebody drops, I can have a guy ready to go to fulfill his role.

A realtime Skype meet would be difficult for me due to my wonky schedule (I work EST 3 PM to midnight on weekdays), but since I'm just an alt that shouldn't be a big deal.

Roster updated to include you Bewilderbeast.
Title: Re: Johnson looking for a new crew. (PbP)

i would probably be playing a street sam, guy down on his luck, illegal substance use, dishonourable discharge and all that jazz kind of guy. do you want me to submit the background and shee (just in case) or do you only want it if any of the other guys default?
Title: Re: Johnson looking for a new crew. (PbP)
Post by: daGob on <04-07-14/1301:26>
If there's still room I'm totally totally up for playing. Not picky about character type but there are some I'm more familiar with and some I'm less familiar with.

Post by: ismilealot on <04-07-14/1308:18>
As an alt Celtibero I really do need a character sheet and backstory. But you can wait until closer to my drop-dead date if you'd like. Reason being if the others default I want to be able to move you in and already have an idea of how to do so. Same goes for the other alternates. daGob, I'll add you as an alternate, but that's a lot of work on you for a very unlikely shot at the game.

Hoi Chummer (Chummette?)!  I'm a 40 year old veteran Shadowrunner/GM.  I started playing SR1 way back in '89/'90.  I stopped playing when 4th came out, but just nabbed a copy of SR5 a couple weeks ago.  Unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere in the southern Appalachian mountains so I don't have local gamers to play with.  I'd be very interested in playing a game with you if there is still room available.  I typically play mercs (small unit combat style characters - think SEALS/SRT/Delta - as I have a military background and know how small units should move to avoid getting the team killed).  I like smart characters with some social skills, i.e. not just a power-gamer super champ.  I also play shamans/combat mages as well, but they tend to end up looking like mercs with magic lol.  If your character pool ends up lacking a military professional (assault rifles/grenade launchers/machine guns w/ merc contacts:  international arms dealers, hot spot Johnsons, and international spy agency operatives), then please consider me as a team member.  I have not made any characters for 5th ed so I'm able to custom-create characters for your game.

Thanks in advance,

Josh Cummings

P.S.  I also bring gunsmith/weapon n' armor modification to the table as well.

Got to admit Mortimer you look real good on paper. But good on paper and good when the drek hits the fan are two different things. Chummer's who've seen action can start having flashbacks that interfere with the job. And wired reflexes can kill friendlies as well as enemies when you can't tell friend from foe anymore.

And that's my way of saying jeez but I really wish you'd popped in and applied earlier, Because I really do want you. You've got the RL skills to talk to me and both of us enjoy the conversation. If you want 4th alt position you've got it. But, with 4 alt's on the list the guys making up 1-6 are definitely going to get me their backstories and chara sheets asap so they don't lose their spots. You're chance of seeing real game time would be like me bullseyeing a target with a tomahawk. If I knew you better I'd make a game just for you ;) Any chance I can talk you into making a game just for me? As you've seen it's extremely easy to get a group of runners together.

Denver, eh?  Drek, I'm gonna need a better SIN.  Those border crossing are frakked.   8)

You can't handle it chummer then you'd best bow out now. I need runners who can get themselves into and out of every situation as easily as they get into and out of bed. I mind my own business as to whose bed it is.

;)

No problem smiles... maybe I can get in on the next run.  It's true that most player made mercs are just bullet sprayers!  Think less Arnold Schwarzenegger, and more SEAL Team 6.  It's true that wired reflexes can cause issues, but some initiative booster is absolutely necessary to stay competitive in the combat arena.  The gunsmithing/arms dealer contacts allows me (and my group) to always have the right tools for the job (silencers, stun/AP ammo, multi-warhead grenades like smoke/teargas combo), and the ability to use machine guns bring CC (crowd control) to the table.  When using these heavy weapons in a covering fire mode, I force the enemy to use their first actions to run for cover or die while my team picks of stragglers or find cover of their own.  This allows my team to effectively "choose" the actions that the enemy will take instead of waiting to react to what the enemy intends to do!  You will always win a game of chess when you get to play both sides.  Grenade launchers allow me to lay smoke screens for my team to duck out of an imbalanced fight or take out an armored vehicle full of corp cops before they can enter the battle.  A cheap disposable rocket launcher can lay waste to those pesky observation drones, blinding the enemy.  I would say that this kind of character is all about battlefield control.  Anyway, keep me in mind and I'll join the next game.

Cheers

As for GMing a game myself... I would love too!  I'm a massive stickler for game pace.  That is to say that I HAVE to know the rules inside and out so I don't bog things down.  At the moment I don't feel that I know the 5th ed rules well enough (I never bought 4th ed so I still have the mindset of a 2nd/3rd edition GM.  I'll be making a few trips to a gaming store in Athens, Ga over the next couple weeks where I can talk with people who know the rules inside and out.  Once I have a good grasp on the new rules I will be running fairly regular games both live and PbP.  The first campaign is one that I've been dreaming up for the past few years called "For the Children".  A group of orphan children (ages 6 to 12) grow up in the basement of an abandoned building together, living and surviving on the streets of Seattle.  10 years later, those children have grown up, and several become runners!  Will they team up and fight those that would take advantage of children.  Pimps, sex-traders and BLT dealers beware... memories fade slowly and those that you abuse and allow to live may show less mercy when they catch up to you!

Currently, I'm building a Technomancer/Drug Dealer/Doctor. He's more of a support Technomancer though, as in, not a dedicated hacker.

I think technomancer's make very poor hackers anyway. With that character T-bone I'm really looking forward to the backstory.

How long do you want our background to be? I'm more of an improvisation role-player, but I already have a lass peculating in my head.

As a quickie blurb.

"Fiona O'Dare is the daughter of human emigrants from the Elven land of Tir na Nog. Having manifested as a physical adept at a young age, Fiona was taken in and trained in a number of techniques by Ares excelling at close combat. Fiona was also athletic and with natural looks to seduce others if required. Ares decided to utilize as an espionage agent. This went well, until the rage she had at the takeover of her homeland (fueled by her parents tales of Elven treachery) resulted in her attacking and almost killing a dignitary from Tir na Nog. Even worse, this was directly against her orders. Having blown her cover, Fiona burned her SIN and hit the streets, forging a new identity for herself as the Shadowrunner known as Morrigan."

Please bare in mind I wrote that as it flowed in about a minute, so sorry if it's kinda a poor effort. ;)

I can work with it, it's more important that you like it. However, if you'd like to work together I truly excel at helping players flesh out their backstories so that it's exactly what they want. I've had DM's send their players to me for that. Let me know, because it's totally up to you. But, PbP players need to have a strong sense of their chara. because they're not going to get the same feedback from other players. They are going to get the chance to craft more thorough thoughtful answers in their posts

(And I'm offline for a few hours to run my tabletop.)
Ciao Baby

Hey, i'm willing to chat it through a bit more. I'm generally pretty good at getting into a character when i'm playing them. It's the choosing abilities bit that I am concerned about. I am not a power gamer by any means, but I want a character who is at least basically capable. I'm even having difficulty choosing the exact layout of my capabilities!

A) Attribute B) Magic 3) Skill 4) Metatype 5) Resources (Probably have to be supplemented by karma)

When would you like to work it out? I prefer to do that sort of thing as a discussion so I'm PM'ing you my Skype name so we can have this discussion real-time. Please let me know who you are, Dark Messiah as I routinely decline friend requests from random guys. (To be fair I'd turn down friend requests from random girls too but I've yet to get one of those.)

My character sheet is getting there... Making hackers has always taken a lot of time, and these new rules were kinda kicking my butt. I have made good progress today though, and I got the sheet halfway done. Here's an intro that includes background.

Edit: It looks like my character is going to be a hacker/B&E guy, so... yeah. Lots of crap to lug around and lots of skills. Good times.
He is known as "Son" in the shadows.

Edit: Um... looks like someone tripped over a power cord or something because spoiler code is no longer working for me.

Edit: Almost Done. Just gonna let this marinate for a while to see if I forgot anything or my math was bad. I also made up an item: "Black Backpack". They have no bags or backpacks in the gear listing anymore (that I can find), so I just made one up! Enjoy the spam.   ;)

Edit: Not sure where I got the x3 multiplier for knowledge skills... Fixed it.. and other wierd stuff that I did.

Name: Faith
Alias: The Modern Philosopher/Tron/Son
Race: Human
Sex: Male
Nationality: North American
Lifestyle: Low
Karma Spent(unspent): 25(0)
Physical Description: This young human male sits at the cafe lounge area with his goggles, and headphones on, smiling and waving his hand around, obviously detached from reality. His face is speckled with acne, and his shaggy blond hair is a tangled mess among data jack cable and headphones. You come over to him and wave your hands in front of his face, and he shakes his head and beams a smile up at you, "I know you're there. I know everyone is here." Kids these days... They just think they can multitask through life, and this one is certainly multitasking.
Personality/background    Not long ago there lived a technomage named Jumpstart. Jumpstart was a burnt-out troll mage that was "let go" by his mega corp after he lost his usefulness. He just couldn't handle implants like some of the other mages, and before long, his magic fizzled out. He managed to scrape by building electronics out of spare parts he found in garbage dumps.
One day, Jumpstart found a human baby in a garbage heap while he was looking for spare computer parts. Jumpstart couldn't just leave him there, so he decided to take him home and try to care for the poor thing. It turns out, a kid was just what Jumpstart needed to give him that old lust for life again. He started smiling more, making better hardware, and started teaching himself how to program better software. Pretty soon, he found that his magic ability came back, and started a successful little business as a programmer, hardware manufacturer, and enchanter. Jumpstart had previously just been calling the baby "baby," so Jumpstart decided to name the baby "Faith." After that, he would frequently tell his friends, "When things were looking bad, all I needed was a little Faith."
By the time Faith was two years old, Jumpstart had time and money to start giving the toddler a homegrown education on modern survival. Faith learned just about everything there is to learn about the matrix, society, and, most importantly, how to be a hacker. Faith took to technology like a worm in dirt. When Jumpstart gave Faith his first deck at 5 years old, Faith wouldn't let go of it. He took it to the dinner table, the bathroom, and took it to bed.
When Faith was 14 years old, one of his bloggs entitled "The Modern Philosopher" had reached the "Top 100 Best Bloggs" list, he had sold over 200000¥ in paydata, and was beginning to catch the eye of some Mr. Johnsons. That was when Jumpstart died. Trolls don't live very long, and Jumpstart wasn't all that healthy to begin with. This was a big hit to Faith, but Jumpstart had taught him well. Jumpstart had once said, "Life is too short to wallow in self pity."
Faith couldn't keep up Jumpstart's enchanting business, and that was raking in most of the household income, so he was forced to move to a small apartment in the city. He didn't mind too much, it was just lonely without Jumpstart there. Faith carries on as a successful blogger and hacker, but with these two priorities in mind: 1) improve self  2) improve surroundings.
So far, he has maintained 3 entities on the matrix. One is his blogger alias: "The Modern Philosopher" with which he discusses topics like "Negative Thinkers Are Better Off Dead" and "How To Exploit Mega Corps." The other is his gaming alias, "Tron." He is not a top player on any of the games, but he is definitely pretty good. The other is his hacking alias "Son," which reminds him of how he always will think of Jumpstart as his father.

Joe, that was a beautiful backstory, brought a bit of film. You're in. You'rs and Triskavanski's backstories have me thinking of changing the tone and direction of the game. I was going to call it Devil's Advocate, Shell Game, Defiler's Dance or Sin of the Father's, Now I'm thinking of calling it Faith and Fairy Tales or Witch Light and making it far more edgy/ Which brings me to an important question chummers. When you leave your calling card what's stamped for the UV light to expose?

(Yes, I do watch a lot of TV dramas.)
He has a complete set of high-quality licenses for both of his fake SINs. None of his cyber/bioware is detectable with the naked eye. He looks like a normal, unenhanced elf. He wears an armored, tailored business suit most of the time, which he swaps for casual clothes covered by an armored duster (trenchcoat) when he's doing a run or going anyplace where he expects to be in serious danger.

backstory to be posted...

You mean like a team name?

Well, here's a couple ideas: "Whole Aces", "Doing Denver", "Clean Seconds"

Not sure if you guys are into funny group names, but here's some: "Walnut Pork", "Jerry's Rig", "Murphy's Flaw", "Denver Cowboys"

James "Deadeye" Cussack

background snippet:

someone said one day that war never changes, that's true, it is true whether its a war room, a sprawl, a household or even your own mind, war never changes. war is something they teach you about in the UCAS military, before they they chew you up, pump your brain full of drugs, screw you and then spit you out without even saying a "thank you, you fragger... well I am also to blame, no one told me to go guns blazing to save those snotty kids, no one told me i would take the fall... ah frag it... it was my fault, the whole op went south at that moment, I was supposed to be running ECM and support fire for the whole stakeout on those miserable scum-bag terrorists, the coke on the system also didn't help... frag it all... frag the UCAS.. frag the brass and the whole dirty politicians that fragged the military over and over... frag me for being an idealistic bastard who sucked up all the crap they teach you boot camp... military intelligence my ass. and frag Kelly for dumping me for the ork underground and who thinks they are the sunshine coming out of God's own arse.

Hey Mister, what's with that shiny arm?

This? a job that also went south, not my fault... the Don thought i deserved a shiny new one after my old squishy one got mangled. and kid, enough with the questioning, you run along to your mother or ill tell her about the posy you where hanging out with. The kid just kept looking at me sheepishly like i had drowned a kitty litter... Go on, scram.

Hey Mister, why did you geek that chummer out by the foodshack? he pipped back at me

Because he was annoying me, just like you are kid.

And just like that the kid gave me the middle finger and scrammed. Not a bad kid, reminds me of my brother... kid's mom seems to be ok, minds her one business, too much BTL´s up in her brain and too many john's down on her pants... memories... and that's the whole fraggin problem, too much fraggin memories and the bastard that said that you can drown your sorrows did not account for the fact that they float... now thats one chummer that deserved to get geeked.

-------------------------------------------

and quite honestly i don't think its wasted time, even if i don't make it in i can always use this chummer on one of my games as a PC or NPC, so... nothing lost :) ell even submit the sheet today or tomorrow, besides, someone might also like the concept and all that jazz.

Hi Joe, the game is a PbP so a Skype account isn't really necessary. I give my Skpye name to my players as a convenience to them so that they can talk to me real time if needed. Also, I'd like one meet as a group so that you can meld your backstories a bit, After all, you trust this chummer to shoot straight, conserve ammo and have your back when your dealing with a dragon. Why? When I've finalized the roster and posted a bit of background on the setting I'll also post times for a meet & greet and it'll be held when the most # of players can show. You'll get a chance to talk over your needs and what you'd like to get out of this game and what you really don't want in a game. It'll be a one and done sort of meet. All of the real game will be played in the posts, and attending isn't necessary in order to play.

Just a quick note to let the GM know that I'm still working on Handsome Jack's backstory. I'll try to get it posted when I'm next online on Wednesday. Since I haven't heard anything, I trust that there's nothing wrong with my character's 'sheet' as far as skills, gear, et cetera?

Post by: ismilealot on <04-14-14/1500:04>
The GM works brutal hours one week and then next to nothing the next week. It's one of two reasons the start date had such a long lead time. I knew I wouldn't have time to go over character sheets until this week. That said on my on week I'll only be able to post 3-4x/day unless you guys are able to catch me awake via Skype and let me know you posted, and even then it'll probably only be 6-7x as I respond before and after I go to sleep.(The other reason was Easter as family men have extra activities to tie them up and so I allowed for that.)

So, I'm going to build an dwarf illusion mage for MoneySpiders game (he wants it by tues), and then go over you guys chara sheets. And, if everyone has their sheets ready we'll start the game. Again, I need a solid backstory or as far as I'm concerned you don't have a character to play with. I'll allow mechanical tweaks after the game starts on a case-by-case basis. Gear up chummers, dark is descending at it's time to use the shadows to party.

I have the basics of my character sheet down (I too am a pretty busy person!) I just need to work out the skills and such.

Oh, and actually write up all the juicy background stuff we discusse.

Handsome Jack

Physical Description: He's a tall (6'9"), slender elf who appears to be in his early twenties (he's actually 27) with shoulder-length platinum blonde hair and piercing emerald green eyes. He usually wears a well-tailored, expensive-looking dark blue business suit (complete with white pocket square) over a white cotton shirt sporting a black silk bow tie and gold cufflinks, and a pair of old-fashioned lace-up black Oxford dress shoes. His voice is a soothing tenor quite good enough for a career in music, if he were so inclined. He often affects an upper-class British accent, to go along with his dandy appearance. He's gone to some lengths to make sure that none of his cyber/bioware enhancements can be detected by the unaided eye.

When walking, he glides from place to place with an almost supernatural smoothness of motion. When not taking a client's limo or public transit, he rides a shiny new cherry-red Suzuki Mirage street bike.

Background: Handsome Jack was born Nathan Ford on June 2, 2048 in the UCAS sector of Denver, the bastard son of an elven diplomat and a female human staffer. His mother, not wishing to surrender her child to the elves, had fled to Denver without ever having told the father that she was pregnant. She was killed later that year in one of the many Humanis Policlub attacks when a suicide bomber detonated himself in the Chinese restaurant where she worked as a hostess. A fire rescue crew later found the squalling infant, miraculously alive and intact, buried under tons of rubble. Baby Doe was given the nickname "Handsome Jack" by a paramedic and the name has been with him ever since. Once he was old enough to walk, the too-bright and difficult child for most humans to deal with was bounced from one foster home to another, never in one place for more than a few months before his restlessness and mischief would land him into more trouble than he could finagle his way out of. By the age of seven, SINless, he was learning to survive on the streets using his wits and considerable charm. His eidetic memory made him an excellent and valuable messenger-spy, able to repeat what he heard word for word, complete with vocal inflections, and to accurately describe or sketch anything that he'd seen.

He has a cozy (euphemism for small) low-rent flat in the Sioux sector, just outside of the Hub. He has a complete set of false IDs and licenses under the names "Thomas Magnum" and "Neil Caffrey", the former alias used for most activities (such as paying rent or buying food) while reserving the latter alias for when he's engaged in blatantly illegal endeavors.

Personality: As he got older, and arguably wiser, he became ever more adept at manipulating people to his benefit. First doing so instinctively, then as an intellectual game, he's been treating people as pawns for so long that it's debatable whether he's even capable of having an honest relationship with someone else. He works for whomever is willing to pay him and asks few questions other than the amount of his pay. He's apolitical, except for an outspoken dislike of form-shifting creatures such as dragons.

Brief Backstory
James Cussack is a ex-UCAS military intelligence operative, he was a Sargent acting as a warrant office in the service, usually conducting field operation, surveillance, both physical and matrix, while he was not your top of the line decker or corporate spider he did have enough skills to make a difference for his team. But that was to no avail when a set of faulty information, an order arriving too late from the chain of command, a couple of trigger happy rookies turned what had supposed to be a simple neutralization of a couple of smuggling operatives into a nasty firefight with a gang of milspec armed smuggling ring. the objectives had been simple at first, neutralize the two operatives and retrieve either their commlinks or any files present at the site. security wad supposed to be lax and numbers in favour of James team, The hierarchy, in particular major Hogan, had shared his doubts about the whole operation, but the information James had was solid, or so he though.

The whole thing was a bust, faced with overwhelming fire-power, without magical support, the matrix position jeopardized, it was FUBAR if one had to put in twentieth century terms. in a matter of seconds two men where down, prvt. Carl Ingram (no relation to the manufacturer) and prvt. Spencer Jade, the riggers, providing surveillance and fire support, position jeopardized, as if someone knew exactly how, when and how many would be at the derelict warehouse. It all stank, extracting the platoon was no easy feat, but the men did it, the whole operation turned into a fiasco, two men down and Sargent on the fast track to a court martial.

It was all circumstantial, even the drug use charges, the military have most of the grunts on any a sort of chemical cocktail, even if you do take them (which may have been the case) it should make no much worst that the drek already on your system. In the end james accept to take a dishonourable discharche instead of having to face court martial, he later received a curt message from his father "i had already lost one son, now i am father without sons", that hurt him way more than the discharge, but old man Master Sargent Marshall Cussack was never a easy man to get along with, his expectation always too high, his standards always too strict, he was the true archetype of a drill Sargent, something he carried from his professional life into the upbringing of his children.

James "dead" brother had goblinized during SURGE, it was a shock to James at the time, at first he no longer considered Michael his brother, the effect that turn him into a troll barely making him recognizable in the eyes of his brother. Later as he perceived the social bias that hit his brother, James tried to correct his error, it was not fair in the eyes of the teenager the level of pain the society inflicted upon another that did not had any say on its fate. But some things are hard to correct, his brother fuelling with hatred by the way he was being treated, fuelled by the unfairness of it all ran away a couple of eyes later, while his father never blamed nor ostracised Michael he could not forgive him the inability for not facing the problems and running away, so his blunt statement was that he only had one son left after Michael ran away.

James troubles piled on him when Kelly kept pushing him to use his contacts and skills to help the ork underground, it became a recurrent issue with them, along with the alcohol and drugs. Since he had left the military James had been adrift, Kelly being a militant member for metahuman rights kept pushing James to take a active stand, "By God James, after you how you treated your brother it only makes sense if you amend it by helping other metahumans! why cant you lift your finger to help those in need!", that was usually the flavour of the discussions, after a while Kelly took a stand, she could no longer be with him if he did not take action in her cause, at first the military had been a good excuse for him not to, but having left it... James had ran out of excuses in her book. they broke up their engagement, it was not a pretty thing.

James was left to pick up the pieces of his life afterwards, no home, no fiancée, no service, it all just became a slow spiral down into the abyss of despair that the sprawl is known to be. is he self-destructive? by all means, no. many would just say he is just an angry man adrift in a world that kicks more often than it pulls you up, like someone once said "when you're down even the dogs come to piss on your leg".

A few noteworthy events did arise, there was that job for the mafia, it was supposed to be a simple protection, but as they say "there are no milk runs", that became evident when the safe-house their employer had picked to stash the accountant (no more details about the nature of the person where provided, as if saying he was an accountant sufficed) was attacked by the pawns. James is not a person to directly flaunt the law, its not something he does callously, but if the pay is right and there are no innocent victims involved it just becomes another day in the shadows. His right arm got short pretty bad, from the six man crew only tow where left standing, 3 dead, another severely injured. what had been a simple keep-the-target-safe ended as a fight-for-your-life, its not much of a story really, just a heads up on how he lost his right arm, the Don, at his Capo bequest Robert "Scrimshaw" O'Donnel, arranged for a replacement, some of it was paid by the Mob, some of the improvements by James personal fund, we could say it was a bonus payment for a tougher than expected job (and also one that had not to be split among so many interested parties), while the operation did took some of his edge (no one goes through that kind of trauma and comes back as they where) the right arm more than compensated for it, better than his squishy one had ever been, faster, stronger, that's cyberware for you, it may have some disadvantages, but sometimes the advantages are more than welcome in James line of business.

who? "Deadeye"? yes i can give you some pointers about him, former UCAS military Sargent, former UCAS Department of Strategic Intelligence operative, currently gun for hire and private dick at your service, whatever gets food on the table and a regular fix. not a mean person nor one without conscience, the military and the dishonourable discharge and his breakup with his long time fiancée have turned him into somewhat callous. one can say he is not a peoples person but so wouldn't you be if you had been through the same drek, so yeah, he can be gruff, its true he sometimes can get a bit violent, but hey, its a violent world chummer, at least he wont kick you when you're down, unless you deserved it of course, and yes, cross him and he might just geek you if he can get away with it, but you shouldn't complain, you would do the same to him if you where in his shoes, right chummer?

Origin:

Anatar Shadowstar was born as a young boy into a very poor family. As he was growing up his mother had a BTL addiction that left her useless to her children, Anatar learned to beg and steal for food to feed his sister and himself. When he had reached the ripe old age of 13 his mother died and left him fending for his little family.
Now he was forced to up his effort to keep the place they called home and food on the table for his sister and him. Then that fateful day when he got caught trying to take a cred stick from a drug drop that went bad. Anatar grabbed it when it hit the ground when the rival drug pin was geeking the drop man.
He actually got away a full 2 blocks before the black nightsky rolled up on him, that is when the world ended, he was dragged into the back of the limo and beaten terribly. He was told the cost of theft was death or servitude. They pulled up to his doss and he was told since you are not answering for your crime I will choose for you.
That is when the huge troll bodyguard came from the building holding his sister, the suited man nodded and Anatar watched as his sisters brain was removed from her skull with a large caliber bullet. I spun on the suited man screaming and swinging until I was struck unconscious. The next thing I remember is waking up in more pain than I can ever remember. Then after I could finally stay awake and focus the suited man walked in. I tried to leap from the bed to strangle him for killing my sister but I found out I was restrained.
He then sits down and explains what he has done to me, he said you will become my driver and body guard. I start to laugh and say the minute I am free I will end you, he shows me a button and says you even think of crossing me and I push this detonator to the cortex bomb in you brain. When you have paid off your debt to me I will remove the bomb, but know the cost of the enhancements are great and you will owe me for years.
So my career started as a rigger, I learned control and fighting, I strived to learn everything, to be the best of the best. I started doing off site jobs when I knew it was safe. Started saving cred till I could get the bomb removed without Slick Sammy ever knowing. Then years later the day finally came. Sammy went to his vacation home, I had the procedure done when he was out of the country without me. Then he returned and that day had finally come. I was taking him on his daily pickup route and I had the Roto drone waiting. He stepped out and the ares alpha turned him to Swiss soy cheese. Now alone in the world with just the starting equipment I could gather and hide I turn to the shadows looking for a home and a family.

I like it. We are so tech heavy... which is actually how a good team needs to be in shadowrun. If everyone in your group is a mage, that's a big "uh oh". I also like how we only have one really combat savvy character. I think this will be fun to roleplay because all the characters will be so different.

Can't wait to start.

Ok, I've finally been able to look over chara. sheets and here's what I've come up with so far.

Joe I'm assuming the overage in attributes and skills were paid for by Karma. Your limits are physical 3, Mental 8, Social 5. You are way, way over on knowledge skills. It's L+I x2, not x3 so you are 14points over. Blogs, while it can be 4, you did state you earned a living that way. You need to pick a topic to have specialized in, same as history, literature etc.

ShadoWarrior  ok

Celtibero, you are way, way over on Karma spent. There is a max of 25 from negative quakities of which you have 17 points in neg qualities and 22 in positive for a net of 20 in Karma, you used 6 for nuyen leaving you 14 Karma for contacts and skills.. You are way over in skills, by my count you are 19 over in action skills and 3 over in knowledge skills. If I missed a skill group and counted it let me know. Asfar as contacts you have 6 free karma to spend and the rest comes out of your karma pool so you really need to trim the list down.

Ericen  ok

Triskavancy willpower is max of 6, looks like you need to spend 3 more, unless you're 3 over for the 2nd sprite, but, I thought you only had 1 complex form from your attributes table. Knowledge skills you're 3 over. I don't see any qualities chosen.

Jim, I really need the breakdown of your priority table. It looks like B is both attributes and skills. Which did you choose, which did you spend karma for. You also didn't choose a foci for channeling magic.

I will admit I haven't gone through gear costs yet as I want to do it with a friend. If they're not avail this weekend I'll do it Sun. Hopefully you guys will have the corrections, (or explanations of what you've done), by then. I'd like to have the game set-up and running no later than the 25th so I need the last 2 backstories and character sheets. I'm going to add the list of your contacts to the Obsidian Portal page of NPC's for this group and will update session notes and NPC's there for quick reference. I'd like you guys to post your character sheets there if possible. If not then the first 6-7 posts of the PbP thread will be your chara sheets. Please don't post anything else there before that's done as I want to have a quick reference sheet for each of your chara's always avail. to me for instant access.

Improved Attribute: Willpower, the qualities are right after the knowledge skills.

I count 16 points in knowledge skills.

Second CF is bought with Karma.

and I only have K Nine as my sprite, using 4 karma points.

Post by: ismilealot on <04-20-14/0810:35>
Ok, a better mind than mine looked over your chara sheets and here's the breakdown.

HANDSOME JACK
His BOD should probably just be listed as 3. Bone Lacing only helps with certain things. It isn’t a universal boost to Body.

Condition Monitor: As mentioned above, Bone Lacing doesn’t help here, so it should be 10/11
Overflow: As above, should be 3
Limits: Mental is fine (+2 from Mnemonic Enhancers), Physical should be 4 (as above), Social is fine.

Skills (55, way too many: see notes)
Automatics (6) + Con (6) + Etiquette (6) + First Aid (2) + Forgery (3) + Gymnastics (2) + Intimidation (2) + Leadership (6) + Locksmith (2) + Navigation (2) + Negotiation (6) + Perception (6) + Pilot Aircraft (2) + Pilot Ground Craft (2) + Pistols (1) + Sneaking (1)

Notes: Alright, so Jack has the Influence Skill Group at 5. This includes Etiquette, Leadership, and Negotiation. In your karma write-up, you state you spent 5 karma to raise these skills (as well as Con, for some reason) to 6. That isn’t possible. To raise the Skill Group to 6 would cost 30 karma. (I know it sounds like you can do that from the skills section, and you can break up the group, but, not until the final step at which point raising skills is Rating x 5 Karma (pg 103). Now, assuming you were incorrect in thinking Con was part of the Influence Skill Group and reverting the group and Con back to 5, we get the following:

Automatics (6) + Con (5) + First Aid (2) + Forgery (3) + Gymnastics (2) + Intimidation (2) + Locksmith (2) + Navigation (2) + Perception (6) + Pilot Aircraft (2) + Pilot Ground Craft (2) + Pistols (1) + Sneaking (1) + Influence Skill Group (5)

Which gives 36 points in individual skills and 5 in skill groups. Checks out for Skills B. Your knowledge skills are correct.

Karma & Qualities:
25 Karma
- 25 (Analytical Mind, First Impression, Photographic Memory, & Quick Healer)
+ 25 (Moderate Seafood Allergy, Distinctive Style, Outspoken Prejudice (Small Group))
- 10 Strength from 1 to 2
- 10 20,000 Nuyen
Notes:
- 5 karma left over due to the misunderstanding in skills
- For your allergies everyone sees seafood and thinks lobster and other expensive, easily avoided things. What you may be unaware of is it also includes krill which is the 2nd most frequently occurring food substitute in Shadowrun, based on previous editions. Given your Low-Lifestyle, you will likely be exposed to this often. Otherwise, it is an easy 15 free karma points. With the prejudice. I'm good  with shapeshifters, but, knowing that you have the prejudiced I will definitely add them and it will definitely work both for & against you, it’s not just free karma.

Joe, in regards to Faith
Attributes (Total is 17, but he indicates 16 w/ 20 karma, See Notes)
B (2), A (1), R (1), S (1), W (4), L (3), I (4), C (1)
Notes:
- Did you use karma to boost Logic from 3 to 4? (It’s very expensive). You could dumpstat both Strength and Charisma to 1 and bring each of them individually up to 2 for 20 karma. This would mean he would have two more points to allocate wherever he wants. I would suggest either two points in Logic (for super hacking) or a point in Logic and a point in Intuition.
Initiative: Um. That’s not right. It’s Reaction + Intuition, so it would be 7+(2)D6
Limits are correct

Skills: Everything checks out, although you probably meant Electronics SG rather than Cracking SG at 5, as you have none of the Electronics skills, but all of the Cracking skills listed individually. If you do change your attributes as above, your knowledge skill point calculation will change and pick up a few more after adjustment, just not as many as before when you had the x3 multipler.
Gear:
- You should probably grab a datajack over an imagelink. Same cost and essence, but the datajack does more and precludes the need for an imagelink, trodes, or AR gloves.
- I will double check availability ratings. Some of it doesn’t look right (R6 Agent, for instance). Also, I'm told most GMs allow for generic permits so that you don't have to get a fake permit for every single piece of ® rated gear he has. That gets super expensive, super fast, which I did see, but thought that was the rule. If multiple items are the case I'll allow a single permit for items in similar groups for a x2 cost of 1 license so that you can have multiple items covered under 1 license. You'll still need several licenses, just not a scrolls worth.

Triskavanski
Oh, Trisk's guy should have a Physical Limit of 3. ((2x2) + 2 + 2)/3) = 2.6666), I believe

Between skills and specializations less skill groups, I am counting a total of 52 (6 more than he should have) individual skill points. Was your chara Resonance B at one point in time? and you forgot to remove the bonus Resonance related skill points that comes with that when he downshifted to Resonance C...

I'm not going to allow Codeblock (Set Databomb) NQ for 10 karma. I didn't like it when I first saw it as it's to rare a use for that much Karma. I sat on that decision for a few days and it's still no. I've been trying to think of an alternative. Hacking on the fly is to expensive a cost for that much Karma. I'd like a few suggestions on it from the group to come to a fair codeblock.

Celtibero for Deadeye
- Agility with cyberarm should be 8 rather than 9, as they start at 3 and strength with the cyberarm should be 5.
- Reaction and Initiative include Wired Reflexes as if they are always on. Some people play this way, but there should be an RP penalty.
- Essence actually totals out to -0.75, so he's technically dead. Some of his ware may be higher than standard grade, but there is no mention of it.
-  physical limit should be 6.
-  skills are fine
-  gear looks okay. I got up to his weapons and stopped at 401,450 nuyen. I don't think the rest would put him over the top.
- contacts are fine.

Attributes (Total is 17, but he indicates 16 w/ 20 karma, See Notes)
B (2), A (1), R (1), S (1), W (4), L (3), I (4), C (1)
Notes:

So, what happened was, I took 2 points out of logic, added cybergear, then for some reason saw it as a specialization (in an attribute ?!?!?!) when I was counting points. So, it looks like I have a free attribute point! WOOT! I will just annotate which attributes I increased with karma. This math gets screwy otherwise. I have issues with having a "1" in an attribute.... so that's what I do with the karma, increase them from 1 to 2.

I.... didn't realize datajack had image link and took away the need for other interface equipment. I was trying to figure out what the hell a datajack was for when there are trodes... Now I know!

Fixing other crazy randomness, too. Including that rating 6 agent program.... Brought it down to 4, and now I have extra cash to burn. Prolly gonna convert it back to karma (2 karma) and buff up my contacts a little bit. Gotta think about it a little bit.

I'm still working on the permit thing. I'll just make up a permit called "Hacking Programs Permit". Sound good?

sry for being slow to post these last couple of days but i was sick.

the cyberarm, it shoudl actually be:
obvious full arm
+customization (agility) 3
+customization (strenght) 3
+enhancement (agility) 3

that was what i intended, 3 base+3 to raise to racial limits and +3 for the custom works on the chrome

alphaware:
cyberarm
bone density aug
wired reflexes
cybereyes
cyberdeck
commlink

and that puts the essence at .17

on a secondary note, further into the game, how do you handle the essence? will it be a essence hole? for instance, lets say he goes under surgery to remove the wired reflexes to replace it for a rate 2 synaptic booster, does he remain at .17 with .6 in essence that allows for further cyberware up to that rate?

i had to alter the config of the cyberarm, remove the implanted SMG and downgrade the fake SIN to keep the inventory spending from not overflowing.

i also had the clothing in my sheet that i did not include in the updated sheet, ill do it as soon as i post this one up.

the datasofts, i am still working on the content of them, should have it updated asap, same for the shoftsofts and mapsofts.

ill update the reaction and initiative to reflect that the Wired reflexes might not always be on then :)

Edit: updated the sheet on page 5

Joe, as memory serves Hacking is still illegal in 2075, so think of a legal name to hide your hacking programs in lol.

Trisk I really do think Hacking on the Fly is a very expensive cost for that Karma, but since most of the Hacking will be the decker I'm ok with it if you are. I'll still entertain suggestions from the shadow gallery out there though for something else.

Celtibero, ty for fixing the gear and the essence. I can absolutely see your concerns as you are so far down on essence you can't afford more loss. Sooooo, if you replace gear with better, with a lower essence cost I will let you add ½ of the difference in gain. Once you fold the paper it never truly lays flat again.

Ok, for the meet & greet to mesh backstories I have today off & tomorrow off an then 7 days of brutal. Can any of the party do a meet and greet this evening say 4pm EST, that's GMT -5? or tomorrow morning EST 6am. or EST 3pm. I've added all of you who's Skype names I have to a Skype contact group already. Makes real time notifications possible.

Smiles, the Official method is the Essence Hole.  Basically, once you've spent the essence, you never get it back, but you don't have to spend it again.

So, you start with 6 Essence, and buy a 3 point augment.  You are now at 3 Essence, and 3 has been spent on gear.  Say a month later, you pull all that gear out, and get new replacements for those parts that cost 1.5 Essence.  You are still at 3 Essence, but only have 1.5 worth of stuff in you, so you can go out and buy 1.5 essence worth of stuff to fill in what you've already spent, without losing more Essence, and dropping below 3.  You don't lose any more essence until you have more than 3 points of augments installed.

If it was illegal, then all the hacking programs and decks would be forbidden. They are not forbidden, they are restricted, and so is hacking. I am trying to obtain a fake licenses to partake in that restricted activity with those restricted programs using that restricted equipment. If that's not viable in your game, then I shouldn't buy any licenses at all, and just stick with my fake SIN and try to hide everything else.

on a fake SIN rate 4 just go with a plausible activity :) say the guy is an "security consultant" or "programmer"  or even a "software developer" its not the same as saying "I am a legal hacker" because if you are not part of GOD or a corporate spider (and they would not be called hackers)... there is no such thing as legal hacking... even a corporation hacking into each other is not legal and would be addressed (if it came to light that is) by the corporate court. that is ofc my pov :)

edit: take guns for instance, its not restricted ot forbidden to carry some of them, but as far as i know killing a person (if he has a SIN at least...) is not exactly legal if you get the drift... :D

Spiders are basically matrix guards though, right?  I freely admit that matrix stuff is my only real weakness left in my rules understanding, they just struck me as focusing more on the defensive side of things.  I suppose the best defense against a matrix attack could be to nuke the hacker.

Surely corps would have separate teams who's job is to try to beat the spiders.  I wonder what they're called?

Spiders would probably have a Corp SIN, meaning that they can fall back to Corp immunity if they are picked up/harassed by Lone Star or Knight Errant.  They wouldn't have to worry about licensing their equipment.. but even so, they would probably have legit licenses tied to that Corp SIN.  Same with Company-employed hackers, aka, Security Spiders.

Just remember..  any Sleaze/Attack action pretty much automatically start your OS..  The only ones who really don't have to worry about OS, are those Spiders, and legit Deckers that are working in Hosts, G-Men, etc..  If your character is not one of those select few that don't have to worry about their OC, then you are, in fact, hacking illegally.

Now, you can buy a fake SIN that might label you as a security Spider, and have fake licenses for your deck/programs to corroborate that story.  Or, you can forgo licenses, hoping that you can back up the fake SIN, or just bluff the hell out of anyone that stops you and finds your gear.  But don't try fooling yourself into thinking that hacking is legal, just because the related gear is Restricted, and not Forbidden.

Post by: ismilealot on <04-20-14/2330:52>
My further explanation on the subject was going to be: “
And that was my point Joe. Yes in today's world there are absolutely corporate hackers. Their real job is to try and hack into other corps security and steal secrets. But, that is absolutely not their title and if they get caught the corp tries to disavow all knowledge, “ie John Doe was absolutely acting on his own in this instance and has been fired, and woops, you can't ask him any questions because he's been the unfortunate victim of an accident.”  What I think of those licenses as is a legal trail that the officers won't question. The better the rating, the better the job someone did at hiding the illegal in a very, very legal system when someone actually does start nosing around and asking questions. The better the rating the more likely you can even get a job at the place your trying to hack into because your credentials check out on a preliminary scan. So, my dear Decker, while you think of them as your hacking programs license, when "suits" start asking nosy questions like, "Why does a kid like you have this stuff as it's illegal to have it without a license? and Why do you have a license for it?. Why does a blogger need equip and software that can let them hack into high security systems? etc" What's the story you're going to spin, and what legal activity is it supposedly for? What's the legal title of that license? And it is absolutely your option to try and just go the illegal route with no cover story to explain your equip when you get caught. But, hacking is illegal, there's just a lot of legal jobs that use very similar skills and programs.

On another note. Drop dead date for backstories is the 22nd, no exceptions. ShadoWarrior we discussed yours and I'm happy with it if you are. But you need to post it. Your team mates need to know who they're working with. And the drop dead date applies to alternates as well. I've made the Obsidian Portal Page. I'll place plot point notes from sessions there as well as contact info and setting info, If you want to join it then you need to send me your Obsidian Portal Name. I've titled the PbP thread as Neverland. Those who've had their chara's ok'd please place them there. No takers on the meet & greet. So those of you who are in this game need to start workingout how you met/know each other etc in the thread.

Thanks for pointing out what I need to fix on my character build.

RE: skills, of  course I'll revert the 3 skill group skills and Con to 5. I'll think about whether to spend the spare 5 karma during building or start the game with it.

RE: the allergy, I was expecting it to apply to all seafood (fish, crustaceans, etc.), and not just fancy hard-to-encounter stuff. I understand the concept of 'common'. But I wasn't aware of the usage of krill in the game. Which changes a 'common' allergy into an allergy to a ubiquitous substance (like high-fructose syrup in the real world) and a much more serious problem than a mere 15 points is worth. I'll change the allergy to something else, something more reasonable.

RE: his prejudice, if it's going to cause our group to frequently run into a dragon then please let me know and I'll pick something else to dislike. I'm not going to screw over our entire play group over a silly 5 point pick.

EDIT: almost forgot about the bone lacing. I'll have to give that mod a lot of thought. If it doesn't affect the derived stats, then it's not all that useful to someone who's not a razorguy. I may be able to find better uses for the money and  essence.

Spiders almost always use Biofeedback and hot sim when dealing with an enemy hacker, unless the gm is trying to go easy on the hacker, or wants to be different.

Armor, Defuse, Guard, Shell, Sneak, Stealth, and Wrapper are programs that could be considered defensive, but they are called hacking programs.

Spiders almost always. . . .
. . .are legitimately employed by the Corps (or other places that are allowed legitimate Spiders), and so that employment typically trumps law (Extraterritoriality, and all that).  a Spider can use "illegal" attack actions all day long, but since they are registered as employees of a Corp, their OS doesn't twitch, the GODs never come down on them (p.232, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph)

Shadowrunners, on the other hand, are.. typically..  not legitimately employed by the Corps, so they don't have the same legal backup to let them get away with carrying the illegal stuff.  Instead, they have to rely on trickery, forgeries, Fake SINs and Licenses to try to convince anyone checking, that they do have legitimate reasons to be carrying "hacking" software.

So it really doesn't matter what Spiders use, because f they are stopped by the cops, they typically have the credentials to back themselves up.  Sh

As additional food for thought that self-same corp spider or security guy would absolutely not be covered by his licenses or corp legal muscle if he was using company equip & software to do things on his own time and for his own benefit, You can use the company car on company business. If you get caught using the company car to smuggle drugs on your weekends off they will let the police arrest you. If you get caught using the company car to smuggle drugs and it's going to reveal that the car has a built in hidden compartment that still has DNA from a body they've disavowed all knowledge of they're going to extract you, find out how much you know and then get rid of any loose ends.
Same with hacking and those licenses. Tied to SIN's and give you a reason to have that stuff. "Just trying to catch up on some work officer" and the license checks out, or it doesn't. "Yes, I've worked with Mitsuhama in the past as a traveling consultant and I'd like to settle down now. So, while I'm settling in I'm putting my resume out there." "I'm an AR designer but I'm here on vacation." So, you can have them and use them to try and bluff your way out when you're caught. You can save the nuyen and geek the suit asking you nosy questions. BUT, bottom line I want you to think about your chara and what they're going to do and how they're going to do it and what cover they're using and start thinking outside of the rulebook. Yes the book calls them hacking programs, because it's a rulebook and you need to know what they are and what they're for. But, if you're going to have them I want you to actually think about them, and spin a cover story for them because cops don't buy that you're using hacking programs as a legal hacker outside of a corp anymore than they'd buy that you're using high-grade milspec and armor piercing bullets to go deer-hunting, Walking down the street isn't the problem, getting caught inside a secure facility with a set of lock-picks is. And then the licenses aren't likely to help you for long tbh. But they may just give your team the time they need while the suits spend some time checking them out. There are lots of ways a smart runner uses his tools. But not if he hasn't invested the time to think about them.

First of all, I bought regular ammo for my character for a reason, and a permit for regular ammo for a reason. If my character doesn't think he can smuggle his forbidden gear into a place that he intends to go (let's use a soycaf bar for an example), then he is not going to bring his APDS rounds, or any of his other forbidden equipment for that matter. In fact, if he doesn't think that he can come up with a good cover story as to why he is bringing any of his restricted gear that he has licenses for to a soycaf bar, he won't bring that either. My character is not going to be walking the streets of Denver with a deck and a full backpack full of B&E gear while he's buying soycaf at a local soycaf bar. This is what an apartment is for.... which is why my character has an apartment.... to store gear that he doesn't think he can smuggle or explain away.

Second of all, why is it assumed that my character is going to be using his deck for hacking while broadcasting his fake SIN? That's about the stupidest thing you could possibly do... Almost as stupid as broadcasting your SIN while taking out security personnel with your semi-automatic weapon. The fake SIN and licenses are ONLY for some credentials to back up whatever story he (or the face) has come up with (fast talk, and that's why I purchased that skill) as to why he is going from point A to point B with said equipment. Point A being his apartment. If my character doesn't think he can make it to point B (the job) with his restricted or forbidden equipment, then he is going to have to do the job from the privacy of his apartment, or get some help to get to point B with the equipment (we do have a team, after all). I bought the licenses to give our face a little bit of a break when he tries to explain why the teenager in the back of the van has a deck and a gun (which he hopefully never has to do anyway). Once we get to point B, time to stop broadcasting a fake SIN, get our comlinks into silent mode or Wrapped with some good cover icons, and get the job done. ANY AND ALL HACKING should NEVER be done while broadcasting a SIN. That is just plain dumb, unless you are hacking for a mega corp, security company, or some other entity that has monopolized the legal system, i.e. a spider ON THE JOB.

Thirdly, I bought these fake licenses to HELP my character. I am really starting to think that everyone wants my fake licenses to HURT my character. If the writers of the game wanted fake licenses to HURT characters, then they would be a negative quality characters could obtain for extra karma.... BUT THEY ARE NOT! They are items in the game meant to help characters survive the world of Shadowrun, and the cost of them reflects that.

Fourthly, I am not going to come up with a single cover story to explain all my equipment and licenses. That would be setting up my character, and our team, for failure. I need to be able to have the flexibility to come up with the best cover story for the situation at hand, and our team needs that flexibility too. The cover story may not even be created by my character. The cover story may be created by our face, so if my character is sticking to his own little cover story he made up with his little teenager mind, that may screw things up for our face and our team.

Fifthly (yep, that's a word), I put a LOT of thought behind just about everything I say, write, or do. I'm not claiming that everything I say is correct, appropriate, or true, but it is certainly well thought-out. Insinuating the opposite is an insult. Period.

Lets take it by parts shall we?

I'm still working on the permit thing. I'll just make up a permit called "Hacking Programs Permit". Sound good?

To me (and all of this post is ofc my opinion) that's the same as having a SMG with the permit "firearms: murder tools" attached to them. carrying and possession may be legal within some groups (security guards, KE, whatever) that have the permits (legal ones for that matter) but i would not be one of them, i am a shadowrunner, thus the permit should be something that does not draw too much attention or raise any flags, think about it for a second will you?

your whole point about hacking not being illegal...

Joe, as memory serves Hacking is still illegal in 2075, so think of a legal name to hide your hacking programs in lol.
If it was illegal, then all the hacking programs and decks would be forbidden. They are not forbidden, they are restricted, and so is hacking. I am trying to obtain a fake licenses to partake in that restricted activity with those restricted programs using that restricted equipment. If that's not viable in your game, then I shouldn't buy any licenses at all, and just stick with my fake SIN and try to hide everything else.

its illegal, thus there is GOD and demi-GODs, are you a corporate spider? are you a member of GOD? no? good, then its illegal. a corporation hired you to do some hacking? if it goes south do you think they will say "oh yeah... we hired him for that alright, just don't touch him plz"... most unlikely, they will dissavow any knowledge of your activities (and possibly contract a wet-work on your head just to keep it safe)

Thirdly, I bought these fake licenses to HELP my character. I am really starting to think that everyone wants my fake licenses to HURT my character.

hmm... like... everyone has them? but guess what? they are FAKE :) yup, you read it correctly (and you also wrote it correctly), they are fake as in not legal... so... is it advisable to keep them as plausible as possible? hell yeah imho.

Fourthly, I am not going to come up with a single cover story to explain all my equipment and licenses

I've created a user account for Obsidian Portal.  User name is Radecliffe.  ;)

I chose the following priorities: A: Magic 6 / 2 x Magic skills at rank 5 / 10 spells | B: Attributes 20 | C: Metatype Dwarf (1) | D: Skills 22 | E: Resources 6,000.

The one special attribute point I got from metatype went to boost magic to seven which i could do since I took the Exceptional Attribute PQ for magic.  If that is not ok then just let me know and I will adjust.

I got 2 magic skills at level 5 from taking magic at priority A.  That is Summoning and Spellcasting.  I also boosted both to 6 and specialized Spellcasting from my base skill pool.   Also all the rank one skills (Alchemy, Binding, Ritual Spellcasting, Astral Combat and Survival) are paid for from karma at 2 points each.

Karma breakdown:
Qualities: net 3 karma spent (see below)
PQ: 19 karma spent
NQ: 16 karma gained
Contacts: 2 karma spent
Skills: 10 karma spent
Resources: 10 karma spent

Note:  I've saved my worksheet as a pdf and linked below for reference along with my character sheet in case excel is a problem.  I've made a few minor updates since I initially posted it, just FYI.

Description:  Of average height and slender build for a dwarf Tobias sports a heavy tan and a weather beaten look that indicates a great deal of time spent in the outdoors.  Other distinguishing features of note is the fact that he's bald as an egg and sports a neatly trimmed van dyke that he tends to stroke when contemplating a particularly difficult problem.  Tobias can most often be found wearing comfortable work clothes on the order of work boots, cargo pants, pull over shirt, armor jacket, leather gloves and an old battered panama hat.  When the situation warrents it he will also strap on an ancient, but still deadly, Ruger Warhawk.  Just to keep the opposition honest, of course.

Personality:  Tobias can often appear absent minded though when the pressure is on or when he is working on his research there is no doubting his ability to focus.  In social settings Tobias has no problem holding his own and is always willing to regale those around him with tales of the places he has been, the people he has met, the things he has seen and the critters that have tried to eat him.  It is When he comes across an interesting piece of arcane lore or some object of historical significance that his true obsession comes to the surface.  Running the shadows might pay the bills but it is in the delving of secrets and the pursuit of rare knowledge that is his true passion.

Background:  Tobias was born and raised in a small community a couple hours from Denver deep in the Rocky Mountains.  He will tell you community but really the it was more of commune than community.  Tobias' parents along with the other residents were all a bit radical in their thinking that corporations were a corrupting influence on metahuman society and they wanted nothing to do with it.  They stayed off the grid, conducted their research for the sake of research and raised their kids to follow in their footsteps.  More or less anyway.  Tobias was a particularly talented mage, much like his father, but also a particularly lazy student except concerning subjects that piqued his interest.  Then one summer Tobias two things happened.  The first was The final straw came when Tobias discovered the field of archaeology.  He devoured every scrap of text available on the subject and eventually declared his intention to leave home to pursue his research in the field like any good archaeologist.  Not surprisingly his parents were not overly supportive of his decision and over the next several days the arguments were long, loud and numerous.  Finally, Tobias packed up his few belongings and stormed out of the house never to return.

Arriving in Denver broke, SINless and without a clue as to how the outside world worked it was a minor miracle that Tobias was not picked up at any of the various boarder crossings.  But with a lot of luck and not a little paranoia Tobias managed to stay out of trouble and (more importantly) out of jail for several days.  Things probably would have still ended badly if not for a chance encounter late one night.  Walking to his squat Tobias saw a couple gangers working over a Dwarf in an alley.  One Earth Elemental later and it was the gangers laid out on the ground and the older dwarf, Mr. C as he called himself, professing his gratitude.  Mr. C got Tobias a job with a talismonger he knew, Sally One Eye.  Sally gave him the job of helping her collect and process reagents for sale to the local magic community.  Mr. C also helped him find a place of his own in the PCC sector community of Lakewood.  It did not take Tobias long to realize, however, that if he were going to make enough money to pursue his research he was going to need to do a lot more than harvest reagents.  Eventually Tobias secured his first shadowrun commission and never looked back.

Over the next decade or so Tobias would run the shadows building up a stake until he had enough money to either finance a small expedition of his own or buy into a larger expedition.  He did several digs in China, South America and Europe and after each one he managed to end up back in Denver broke and more or less empty handed but still satisfied he had managed to delve a little deeper into the past each time.  Ever undaunted Tobias would return to the shadows long enough to earn enough money for the next dig and it was off to work the next site.  Never in it for the bling Tobias would have been content to continue this cycle indefinitely had it not been for that last dig in South America.  To say that things went badly in South America is like saying Nanothrax is a nasty cold.  They had just started working the dig when the expedition was overrun by pack of feral beast spirits.  Tobias had taken seven, well equipped, veteran researchers into that jungle and when he came stumbling out a month later he had two half dead, gibbering wrecks with him.  For the first time Tobias had learned a lesson that was not to his liking.  If you are going to go digging up ancient secrets in the sixth world you damned well better have the power to blow the living drek out of whatever it is that didn't appreciate you digging it up in the first place.  So now he's back in Denver running the shadows and biding his time until he has the power to do just that, assuming he lives long enough of course.

Legal hacking is legal. Illegal hacking is illegal. There IS such a thing as legal hacking. Anyone that wants to set up a secure network can to it best by using hacking programs. They can do this legally. That's what the permits are for.

GOD looks for illegal activity, not all hacking in General. No, I'm am not a corporate spider, and no I am not a member of GOD, but those are two possible explanations of why I would have a license to use hacking programs.

My character's entire existence is illegal. He has no SIN. He has a fake SIN to appear to be legal. He has fake licenses to appear to own and use equipment legally.

And this is exactly what I'm talking about. Penalizing a player for using the game system correctly is bad gaming. Period.
The programs are called hacking programs, and they are not called anything else. They are restricted so everyone that owns them and uses them must obtain a license to  own them and use them. My character is obtaining those permits illegally in an effort to appear to be legal. The best rating he is able to obtain on those permits is rating 4, which is enough to pass the random roadblock that you described. If you don't think so, then you should probably let your players know that the in-game items they purchased will not work in your game.

Pardon me for pushing in, but "Licensed decker" seems like a perfectly valid wage-slave job to me.

Also "Permit for restricted cyberprograms" or "License to own and use restricted cyberprograms" would work, at least for my table. It's similar to how the Archetypes have licenses for their guns.

quote from page 231: "some matrix actions are illegal, making them more risky than legal actions. The Matrix was built with security in mind, but of course they couldn't make it hacker proof. The list of illegal actions is pretty simple: all Attack and Sleaze actions are illegal."

this is the canon, if you disagree you are free to argue that it should be different, just don't go about saying hacking is legal, because when it comes to fluff it is not legal, period.

Spider get away because they can, they have the corps backing them, covering them, take your pick, and corps spy on each other, they take as much illegal activity against each other as much as they can in order to get that extra edge, but that does not make any of those actions legal. its unfair? yes it is chummer.

"Of course, G-men, security spiders, IC, and other users who are officially sanctioned by GOD never rack up an Overwatch Score, even if they're misbehaving. Such is life on the Matrix. And in the meat world , too, Come to think about it" page 232

you are talking about actions, not programs, but while we are on the subject, here are some actions that are not attack or sleeze actions: Control device, Disarm Data Bomb, Edit File, Enter/Exit host, Grid Hop, Invite Mark, Jack Out, Jump intro Rigged Device, Matrix Perception, Matrix Search, Reboot Device, Send message, Switch Interface Mode, and Trace Icon

Almost all of these actions can be enhanced with hacking programs.

hacking programs....by themselves they do nothing, they are just cyber programs, its what they are used for (outside the boundaries of law) that sets them as restricted, it may be fairly legit to protect your hardware against illegal bricking, that's not illegal, but using those programs to facilitate criminal activities (i.e. hacking) is why they are under the close scrutiny of the law (same as certain cyberware, firearms and ammo)

The program itself may not be illegal, but like i said earlier, if you have stated on a permit "hacking programs" that's going to arouse suspicion, (on a best case scenario the KE agent might be thinking you are making fun of him) and that's the last thing a (non suicidal) shadowrunner should do, correct?

Joe, I happen to like rules lawyers. I happen to like guys who argue legalities with me. And I absolutely love guys with such a strong sense of their chara's they know what cliff edge their chara's absolutely will and will not jump off of. But, all your early arguments have been more of the, "No, this is legal. So if you're going to say that my fake licenses aren't viable in your game than you should let players know that their legally purchased equip, fake licenses and all aren't viable in your game." When all I asked was for you to come up with a cover story, and call the licenses that and hacking programs in parenthesis. No intention on my part to do anything with those licenses than any other GM does. Useful sometimes, subject to the occaisional scrutiny where the ratings matter. But, then you saw posts from other people, and you let me get a good look at you. This has been the most adriot bit of snarky trolling I've ever seen. You're comments haven't given anything remotely close to being bannable and on the surface have seemed reasonable, while being snide, sarcastic and baiting. (Nice job on the baiting btw, you baited on multiple levels simulatanously in an excellent bait & switch subjects tactic.) So, I had intended to give you a bit more rope and see what you made with it. But, bottom line is that this is a cooperative story-telling game. And in that game it's essential that the players are able to work cooperatively with each other. And, snide, sarcastic baiting of the other players just isn't fun for anyone but you. So I'm dropping you from the game. You were my absolute fave backstory, and I wanted a rules lawyer in the game. But, I need a player that can play well with others.

I need you guys to start building connections with each other. I expect each of you to build a connection to two of the other players. Two of you may be lazy and call dibs on building a connection with csjarrat's chara once he brings it. He's working on a decker and will have the backstory here tomorrow or the day after at the latest. (He's getting a date extension because it's a different chara than the one he submitted via pm the first day of this thread.)
So, who went to school/gang/Basic Training/space camp together? Who's friends from the old country? Who's the baby brother of an old fling/ex-wife? Who met on what job? (If you use that I expect a paragraph on the job and how it went.) You chummers are working together. I expect you to build reasons for that. And that includes liking and trusting some of your crew more than others. If you build an oil & vinegar relationship I expect you to make sure it's got grudging respect to explain while you still work with each other. Or if you trade insults constantly it's because you're actually good friends and you both know it. By the end of this process I expect everyone in the group to have a connection to 2 of the others. I will not have a metahuman left behind. There will be no freebie contacts and no foci waving to say, "Umm, yeah ok, y'all all know and trust each other already. I expect that done no later than the 25th. You're all PbP'ers. You've all committed to posting in this game. Consider these you're prequel posts. As such, I've made the OOC thread for all of this set-up material.     http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=16197.0

If you'd like some help with suggestions I'm happy to help. For example Trisk's chara the professor could have read a paper on magic written by Jim's dwarven mage and thought it was interesting enough to start up an online friendship with him. Celtibero's chara could have met the mage on one of his expeditions when his crew was assigned to "Get those %&$# civilians out of that area, We've got word that insurgents are going to be coming through." ShadoWarriors face could have done some messenger/spy work for Ericen's old boss. But there was no love lost between them and Ericen's chara may have tipped off Shado's to an intended double cross.  etc, etc But, bottom line for me is that these are your characters. I'm not just going to make your connections and tell you to just live with it. I know I've asked you guys to do something hard. You don't know each other, and so don't know what would and would not be acceptable to each other. You've also got nothing to work with. I haven't put an NPC or situation out there for your chara's to respond to. But, this early set-up is some of the most important, and it'll help guide you in how to respond/interact with each other once the game starts. Because when it starts you're hitting the ground running, and your skills and interactions are what will be tested. So, go ahead, throw something out there for the other players. They're all grown men with their own ideas. If they don't like it they'll tell you. And then offer up a counter-suggestion. It's ok, you guys can do this.

He's apolitical, except for an outspoken dislike of orks, whom he views as ugly and stupid brutes.

I think that covers all of the issues/concerns that our GM had.

I need you guys to start building connections with each other. I expect each of you to build a connection to two of the other players.

ShadoWarrior's face could have done some messenger/spy work for Ericen's old boss. But there was no love lost between them and Ericen's chara may have tipped off Shado's to an intended double cross.
I'll be going with your suggestion of a connection between Handsome Jack and Shade's old boss as one of my two. For the second connection, I intend to tie to The Professor, as I really don't see how I could tie to the dwarf mage (Tobias) based on what Jim's written thus far, nor to Celtibero's gunner, except for the bit about the mafia job he did, but I'd rather not have similar connections to two characters and Ericen's background meshes with my character better.

Its possible handsome Jack and the Professor know each other from high society social gatherings.

Professor could know anyone who uses the matrix fairly well, such as a rigger/decker/gunner etc.

hi guys, here's my char + backstory:
Anyone had a run go wrong in denver?

Derren Smith:
Weapons specialist and all round gun-nut.
Now late in his 4th decade, Derren looks quite the grizzled vet, a greying beard flecked with ginger hairs dominates his face and his greying mane hangs down to his shoulders, framing a face full of lines as well as a few scars.
He grew up the son of a farmer in the Boulder foothills, north west of Denver, born into a family that loved the great outdoors and every Americans' right to own a firearm.
His father collected guns and introduced Derren to them at a young age, setting up an impromptu target range in the far fields.
He became very competent and eventually competed in regional championships in the non-assisted .22 rifle category, winning a small trickle of prize money in local events.
Derren eventually signed up for a tour with the UCAS military, following in his fathers footsteps, but his good family standing granted him a cushy position in the logistics corp. The position thoroughly bored him and he sought refuge from the boredpom out on the shooting ranges.
His excellent marksmanship skills made him eligible for transfer to a sharpshooter team, being one of very few soldiers able to place a tight grouping at 800m+ unassisted.
Common sense prevailed however and he turned the position down, realising from the mangled bodies that came back from active ops that the heat of combat wasn't as glamorous it was made out to be.
He served two years honourably and then bailed out, falling into private security work for the big-wigs in Denver as a contractor after a short stint as a weapons trainer for DocWagon.
10 years in the biz honed his skills and paid the bills, allowing him to live a reasonably comfy life until his firm was bought out by a rival.
The firm was asset-stripped, its major contracts re-assigned to the parent company and the staff subsumed, fired or re-assigned out-of-state.
Derren had made a name for himself as one of the "old guard", easily racking up the best professional record of successful "client safety events" and was an example of.
He was the first to go after militantly opposing the contractual changes to pay and pensions under the new management.
Out of work, it wasn't long before the people he once protected clients from sought out his skills in circumventing the practices he once helped put in place for corporate protection.
Once in the shadows, it wasn't long before a run went south. An extraction in Aurora failed horribly after the Decker was fed misinformation or just plain didnt do his homework well enough. Derren would never find out in person, thanks to the APDS sabot that ended the Decker's life.
The opposition was overwhelming and the small runner team was heavily outmatched. Only Derren and the {face/decker/sam/whatever} got out of the shitstorm alive, both scattering to the winds.
Derren hit the Seattle Barrens and laid low for a year, carefully building up his contacts, gear and doing odd-jobs to cover the cost of the bills.
The 1 year lease on his flat is nearly up and its time for him to get back out there and repair his rep, plus find a way to keep a roof over his head.

Ty for asking Poindexter. But, I've decided against having an alternate list. If I need players I'll advertise for backstories and character sheets by XYZ date and I'll choose a player from the submissions.

I'm dropping Jim from the game. He's simply not posting in the game despite being online and posting in the forums and being invited to post in the game both in the OOC thread and via PM over several different days. That really leaves a rather large hole in the team and lets the team down as a whole. So, I'm looking for a player that's able to post a minimum of 2x/day and able to log into Skype and be a part of the group there even if it's only for an hour or so per day. You must be a strong RP'er, not trigger happy, and a team player both IC and OOC, mage is a plus. You need to post a backstory today. The party will vote on the selection and the person selected will need to have a character sheet posted no later than tues evening. My tuesday evening, (I'm GMT-5.) I wouldn't bother to post if you've really ticked off any of the current party members as they all have veto rights. Current party members are Celtibero, Csjarrat, Ericen, Triskavanci and ShadoWarrior. The Campaign is Neverland in the PbP forums so that you can read it and find out if it's a style of RP and storytelling you'd enjoy. Fair warning I'm very new to SR and still learning the rules. But while I may be a new SR GM I'm not new to RPG's and I'm definitely not new to online play and I have very strong and definite ideas as to what I will & will not tolerate from players, so don't test me.

I'm reading through the OOC and IC posts right now, but I'd like to submit a utility mage by the alias of Loki, posted here. (http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=16098.0)

Fair warning; I'm not used to playing a magician, but I know the rest of the SR5 rules well enough, and though I'm currently active in another PBP (Splintered States (http://forums.shadowruntabletop.com/index.php?topic=16046.msg288269#msg288269), run by Celtibero and playing with Triskavanaski) I can definitely handle the frequent posting.

Let me know what you think; the contacts won't be very useful since they're all in Portland, but I'm OK with that considering he's looking to make/has made his escape from the good, old Tir anyway.

[EDIT]
Looking at the other characters, I'd say it's most likely that Loki would know Handsome Jack. They both have club owner contacts, and they're both elves who speak Sperethiel; Alessia Thorne (Loki's club owner contact) could have arranged to have Loki get out of Cara'Sir as a roadie for a band heading to Handsome Jack's Club Owner contact, in exchange for help with some work doing PR or even actual roadie work (though he'd hate it, and probably not be very good at it).

I could see Loki looking up to Handsome Jack as a person quite simply due to his charismatic character; Loki is a bit of a talker himself, and appreciates good conversation.

Gut reaction pending feedback; to be developed with ShadoWarrior if you pick me.

Done. Will need some input and/or thoughts from the others with regards to connections.
