Joe, that was a beautiful backstory, brought a bit of film. You're in. You'rs and Triskavanski's backstories have me thinking of changing the tone and direction of the game. I was going to call it Devil's Advocate, Shell Game, Defiler's Dance or Sin of the Father's, Now I'm thinking of calling it Faith and Fairy Tales or Witch Light and making it far more edgy/ Which brings me to an important question chummers. When you leave your calling card what's stamped for the UV light to expose?
np Celtibero, looking forward to it. I've pm'd you my Skype name. I'll post possible times for a group meet when the group is finalized. Next week is my off week where I'll go over the character sheets, start the PbP thread and give the group it's details.
I got it yesterday. :)
The GM works brutal hours one week and then next to nothing the next week. It's one of two reasons the start date had such a long lead time. I knew I wouldn't have time to go over character sheets until this week. That said on my on week I'll only be able to post 3-4x/day unless you guys are able to catch me awake via Skype and let me know you posted, and even then it'll probably only be 6-7x as I respond before and after I go to sleep.(The other reason was Easter as family men have extra activities to tie them up and so I allowed for that.)
So, I'm going to build an dwarf illusion mage for MoneySpiders game (he wants it by tues), and then go over you guys chara sheets. And, if everyone has their sheets ready we'll start the game. Again, I need a solid backstory or as far as I'm concerned you don't have a character to play with. I'll allow mechanical tweaks after the game starts on a case-by-case basis. Gear up chummers, dark is descending at it's time to use the shadows to party.
Here's what I've got so far for submissions :
*1.) ShadoWarrior - "HANDSOME JACK" : ELVEN FACE : backstory and character complete
*2.) Triskavanski - "THE PROFESSOR" : HUMAN TECHNOMANCER : backstory and character complete
*3.) Joe15552 - FAITH : HUMAN DECKER : backstory and character complete
4.) The DarkMessiah HUMAN ADEPT : backstory complete
5.) Jim - TOBIAS JONES - DWARF MAGE : Character only
*6.) Ericen - ANATAR "SHADE" SHADOWSTAR : HUMAN RIGGER : backstory and character complete
*7.) Celtibero - JAMES "DEADEYE" CUSSACK HUMAN GUNNER : backstory and character complete
Alternates :
2.) Bewilderbeast
3.) DaGob
Attributes (Total is 17, but he indicates 16 w/ 20 karma, See Notes)
B (2), A (1), R (1), S (1), W (4), L (3), I (4), C (1)
Notes:
- Did you use karma to boost Logic from 3 to 4? (It’s very expensive). You could dumpstat both Strength and Charisma to 1 and bring each of them individually up to 2 for 20 karma. This would mean he would have two more points to allocate wherever he wants. I would suggest either two points in Logic (for super hacking) or a point in Logic and a point in Intuition.
Celtibero, ty for fixing the gear and the essence. I can absolutely see your concerns as you are so far down on essence you can't afford more loss. Sooooo, if you replace gear with better, with a lower essence cost I will let you add ½ of the difference in gain. Once you fold the paper it never truly lays flat again.
Joe, as memory serves Hacking is still illegal in 2075, so think of a legal name to hide your hacking programs in lol.If it was illegal, then all the hacking programs and decks would be forbidden. They are not forbidden, they are restricted, and so is hacking. I am trying to obtain a fake licenses to partake in that restricted activity with those restricted programs using that restricted equipment. If that's not viable in your game, then I shouldn't buy any licenses at all, and just stick with my fake SIN and try to hide everything else.
... there is no such thing as legal hacking...
.... and spiders... there is no such thing as legal hacking...
Don't mind me popping my head in, but I just wanted to point out, there are in fact legal hackers right now. They are people hired by companies to test their security and try to find weak points. It just struck me as an interesting day job for a runner (especially one with a corp SIN NQ).
Spiders would probably have a Corp SIN, meaning that they can fall back to Corp immunity if they are picked up/harassed by Lone Star or Knight Errant. They wouldn't have to worry about licensing their equipment.. but even so, they would probably have legit licenses tied to that Corp SIN. Same with Company-employed hackers, aka, Security Spiders..... and spiders... there is no such thing as legal hacking...

On another note. Drop dead date for backstories is the 22nd, no exceptions. ShadoWarrior we discussed yours and I'm happy with it if you are. But you need to post it. Your team mates need to know who they're working with. And the drop dead date applies to alternates as well. I've made the Obsidian Portal Page.I did post the backstory ... here, in public, where every player could see it. If you need me to post it on Obsidian Portal then I'll need the URL for your page, as I don't recall seeing you post a link to it in this thread. Please be aware that I'm not online every day, just 3-4 times a week. I'll next be online on Wednesday, so I'll post my revised character sheet then.
Spiders are basically matrix guards though, right? I freely admit that matrix stuff is my only real weakness left in my rules understanding, they just struck me as focusing more on the defensive side of things. I suppose the best defense against a matrix attack could be to nuke the hacker.Spiders almost always use Biofeedback and hot sim when dealing with an enemy hacker, unless the gm is trying to go easy on the hacker, or wants to be different.
Surely corps would have separate teams who's job is to try to beat the spiders. I wonder what they're called?
Spiders almost always. . . .. . .are legitimately employed by the Corps (or other places that are allowed legitimate Spiders), and so that employment typically trumps law (Extraterritoriality, and all that). a Spider can use "illegal" attack actions all day long, but since they are registered as employees of a Corp, their OS doesn't twitch, the GODs never come down on them (p.232, 2nd column, 2nd paragraph)

Shadowrunners, on the other hand, are.. typically.. not legitimately employed by the Corps, so they don't have the same legal backup to let them get away with carrying the illegal stuff. Instead, they have to rely on trickery, forgeries, Fake SINs and Licenses to try to convince anyone checking, that they do have legitimate reasons to be carrying "hacking" software.
So it really doesn't matter what Spiders use, because f they are stopped by the cops, they typically have the credentials to back themselves up. Sh
Yes... but his SIN and his licenses are not fake... they hold up to scrutiny.... yours... well... not so, then why flaunt it?!? to get jail time? seems a fast way to the county house (or to the river bottom if KE officer in charge does not give a damn about 1 less SINless chummer)

Exactly, so when a spider is not being a spider and walking down the street and broadcasting his SIN, his licenses to do all that hacking he does at work using a deck and hacking programs show up if security personnel/drones run a scan on his SIN.
why would a spider be walking down the street with his deck?
As additional food for thought that self-same corp spider or security guy would absolutely not be covered by his licenses or corp legal muscle if he was using company equip & software to do things on his own time and for his own benefit, You can use the company car on company business. If you get caught using the company car to smuggle drugs on your weekends off they will let the police arrest you. If you get caught using the company car to smuggle drugs and it's going to reveal that the car has a built in hidden compartment that still has DNA from a body they've disavowed all knowledge of they're going to extract you, find out how much you know and then get rid of any loose ends.
Same with hacking and those licenses. Tied to SIN's and give you a reason to have that stuff. "Just trying to catch up on some work officer" and the license checks out, or it doesn't. "Yes, I've worked with Mitsuhama in the past as a traveling consultant and I'd like to settle down now. So, while I'm settling in I'm putting my resume out there." "I'm an AR designer but I'm here on vacation." So, you can have them and use them to try and bluff your way out when you're caught. You can save the nuyen and geek the suit asking you nosy questions. BUT, bottom line I want you to think about your chara and what they're going to do and how they're going to do it and what cover they're using and start thinking outside of the rulebook. Yes the book calls them hacking programs, because it's a rulebook and you need to know what they are and what they're for. But, if you're going to have them I want you to actually think about them, and spin a cover story for them because cops don't buy that you're using hacking programs as a legal hacker outside of a corp anymore than they'd buy that you're using high-grade milspec and armor piercing bullets to go deer-hunting, Walking down the street isn't the problem, getting caught inside a secure facility with a set of lock-picks is. And then the licenses aren't likely to help you for long tbh. But they may just give your team the time they need while the suits spend some time checking them out. There are lots of ways a smart runner uses his tools. But not if he hasn't invested the time to think about them.
Fourthly, I am not going to come up with a single cover story to explain all my equipment and licenses. That would be setting up my character, and our team, for failure. I need to be able to have the flexibility to come up with the best cover story for the situation at hand, and our team needs that flexibility too. The cover story may not even be created by my character. The cover story may be created by our face, so if my character is sticking to his own little cover story he made up with his little teenager mind, that may screw things up for our face and our team.
I'm still working on the permit thing. I'll just make up a permit called "Hacking Programs Permit". Sound good?

Thirdly, I bought these fake licenses to HELP my character. I am really starting to think that everyone wants my fake licenses to HURT my character.

its illegal, thus there is GOD and demi-GODs, are you a corporate spider? are you a member of GOD? no? good, then its illegal.
hmm... like... everyone has them? but guess what? they are FAKE :) yup, you read it correctly (and you also wrote it correctly), they are fake as in not legal... so... is it advisable to keep them as plausible as possible? hell yeah imho.
Seattle Downtown
2113pm
Impromptu roadblock at undisclosed location
A large van stops at a Knights Errant roadblock
KE officer: Good night gentleman, start broadcasting your SINs. KILO-ECHO-delta01 start scanning for weapons and cyberware, KILO-ECHO-delta02 run a matrix search.
Face: come on officer we where just going downtown for a drink
KEofficer: all SIN seem to be in order...
KEdelta01: Sir, scan this, one of the broadcasted permits reads " Hacking Programs Permits"
KE officer: are you guys joking with me?!?!? Weapons at the ready, hands up and leave the van immediately, double check all the permits and SIN's boys.
Face: errrr I am sure the teenager in the back can explain better than i....
Pardon me for pushing in, but "Licensed decker" seems like a perfectly valid wage-slave job to me.That's a good suggestion.
Also "Permit for restricted cyberprograms" or "License to own and use restricted cyberprograms" would work, at least for my table. It's similar to how the Archetypes have licenses for their guns.
on a fake SIN rate 4 just go with a plausible activity :) say the guy is an "security consultant" or "programmer" or even a "software developer"
quote from page 231: "some matrix actions are illegal, making them more risky than legal actions. The Matrix was built with security in mind, but of course they couldn't make it hacker proof. The list of illegal actions is pretty simple: all Attack and Sleaze actions are illegal."

you familiar with the comic character "Groo the wanderer" from Sergio Aragonés?
after a few hours you actually say that something (very) similar to what i proposed earlier is actually a good suggestion.... dont know if i should laugh or cry, or maybe laughing so hard i cry :D better not... kids asleep ;)
nope... you actually skipped that post i reckon :)

you are talking about actions, not programs, but while we are on the subject, here are some actions that are not attack or sleeze actions: Control device, Disarm Data Bomb, Edit File, Enter/Exit host, Grid Hop, Invite Mark, Jack Out, Jump intro Rigged Device, Matrix Perception, Matrix Search, Reboot Device, Send message, Switch Interface Mode, and Trace Icon
Almost all of these actions can be enhanced with hacking programs.
nope... you actually skipped that post i reckon :)
Why are you saying this?
disclaimer: if you are not familiar with Groo and google it, its not an insult, ill explain why if it must be, but do not take it as an insult m8.Why would I take the existence of a comic book character as an insult? Do explain.
Joe, I happen to like rules lawyers. I happen to like guys who argue legalities with me. And I absolutely love guys with such a strong sense of their chara's they know what cliff edge their chara's absolutely will and will not jump off of. But, all your early arguments have been more of the, "No, this is legal. So if you're going to say that my fake licenses aren't viable in your game than you should let players know that their legally purchased equip, fake licenses and all aren't viable in your game." When all I asked was for you to come up with a cover story, and call the licenses that and hacking programs in parenthesis. No intention on my part to do anything with those licenses than any other GM does. Useful sometimes, subject to the occaisional scrutiny where the ratings matter. But, then you saw posts from other people, and you let me get a good look at you. This has been the most adriot bit of snarky trolling I've ever seen. You're comments haven't given anything remotely close to being bannable and on the surface have seemed reasonable, while being snide, sarcastic and baiting. (Nice job on the baiting btw, you baited on multiple levels simulatanously in an excellent bait & switch subjects tactic.) So, I had intended to give you a bit more rope and see what you made with it. But, bottom line is that this is a coopeative story-telling game. And in that game it's essential that the players are able to work cooperatively with each other. And, snide, sarcastic baiting of the other players just isn't fun for anyone but you. So I'm dropping you from the game. You were my absolute fave backstory, and I wanted a rules lawyer in the game. But, I need a player that can play well with others.

For the second connection, I intend to tie to The Professor, as I really don't see how I could tie to the dwarf mage (Tobias) based on what Jim's written thus far, nor to Celtibero's gunner, except for the bit about the mafia job he did, but I'd rather not have similar connections to two characters and Ericen's background meshes with my character better.
ShadoWarrior's face could have done some messenger/spy work for Ericen's old boss. But there was no love lost between them and Ericen's chara may have tipped off Shado's to an intended double cross.
