Apologies for being so late to the party, here - was crazy busy with end of term stuff, and Marlowe and I were settling out some character stuff via PM.
Character Background (Brief overview): Iris "Aziyan" Baudin was born in New Orleans and raised by her father (a skilled detective, and one of the few honest ones at that) after her mother died giving birth. He taught her some of what he knew, both hoping that she might one day follow in his footsteps, until corruption forced him off the job; he had barely made it out with his life and his freedom. Seeing her city's so-called protectors for what they were, but still feeling the loa calling her toward her father's path, she chose instead to open a practice as a private detective and occult investigator, taking the cases the city's private police force would ignore or railroad. She continued to serve the people and the loa as a mambo as well. In the late sixties, however, the loa's call placed her on the trail of a bokor who had been using his dark magic to take advantage of the chaos in the city, leaving behind many dead victims (and, most disturbingly, taking the bodies with him at times) and leaving the astral space deeply and sickeningly twisted as he did his work. Just as she thought she might be close to unearthing his agenda, the bokor chose to strike at her, but not directly - he came at her through her father.
As she came to visit him one day, there was no answer at the door. A vague sense of dread building she found her way in, into the home she had grown up in, but the comfort of childhood memories was completely beyond her. A great deal of blood was found; later testing proved that it was her father's, and it was far too much for anyone to survive the loss of. It was clear that the place had been used as some sort of dark hounfour, but for what purpose she was much too late to determine. It almost seemed as though blood magic had been involved, and varying remains used in whatever ritual had been conducted could be traced to those victims whose bodies had been left at the crime scenes. Soon after, no matter how hard she threw herself into the search she could make no progress - all her leads had tried up; it was as though, his dark purposes complete, the killer had moved on. Her search wreaked havoc upon the community, however, and in time she realized that there was no longer place for her in the city she called home.
She cast herself to the wind, going wherever the loa took her, until she found herself in Seattle, where it seemed she was to stay. She has since struggled to rebuild her practice, but has met with little success. Moving into the shadows was never a conscious decision she made, and in her head she is not truly there, but slowly they have crept over her life as much of the work that she has been able to find has led her there.
