Ok. Thanks. I thought there had to be a password, in some form or another, for one device to communicate to another for update, etc.
There'd be some kind of authentication, certainly. SR4 had Passcodes as one of the less secure forms thereof. Really, though, something like that's more likely just to use a list of trusted devices (which would be purged on change of ownership).
In any case, this is one of those things where you've got to think through how your players would respond to it - and whether the reaction is to what an NPC did, or to what you did. That sort of thing is really just from the "well, you didn't SAY you put out the campfire" school of things, and that's not something that leads to a fun game for most players.
