When GMing I'm considering the idea that used cyberware means at least one other person has the password. Have any other GMs used something similar? I guess I need to put the caveat that: of course I wouldn't do this to everyone, every time they purchased used ware. I was thinking of a roll to see if the password got leaked when the ware was bought second hand. Or, depending on the disads the PC takes, maybe have it come into play. i.e (from 4th ed) If the PC was In Debt then maybe the lender had the password to shut off the ware if payments weren't made or maybe to keep payments coming after they were made. Maybe a threshold test that decreased depending on the disads at chargen.

...  What password?  There's no real indication that that's the primary means of authentication in SR.

In any case, the change of ownership mechanics shoot this down pretty hard.

Not to mention if there was a password, why wouldn't you change it after you bought the thing?

Ok. Thanks. I thought there had to be a password, in some form or another, for one device to communicate to another for update, etc.

There'd be some kind of authentication, certainly.  SR4 had Passcodes as one of the less secure forms thereof.  Really, though, something like that's more likely just to use a list of trusted devices (which would be purged on change of ownership).

In any case, this is one of those things where you've got to think through how your players would respond to it - and whether the reaction is to what an NPC did, or to what you did.  That sort of thing is really just from the "well, you didn't SAY you put out the campfire" school of things, and that's not something that leads to a fun game for most players.

Try just leaving it blank.

Not really - most people use 1234 or 123456. 12345 catches them off-guard. :P
