Background: Soraya has 1 life goal: to be a fixer, and considering where she came from, she figures that running the shadows is the quickest route to that goal. Runners tend to respect retired shadowrunners more. Johnsons are less likely to turn on them, as they know what they're capable of. She's made it 2 years in the shadows already, twice the average life-expectancy of a runner, and the way she figures it a few more connections, a few augmentations to go, and she'll be ready to open up shop and play the information game full time.
Both of Soraya's parents were Saeder-Krupp employees. Not top-shelf talent, mind you, but the decent schools and "family prospects" kind of wage slaves. Despite constantly moving around as a child and adolescent, Soraya was a mostly successful student. Still, her father Mohammad Aboud, expected more and constantly drilled his daughter. He lamented the fact that he couldn't afford a Cerebral Booster for Soraya, an augmentation he often said would level the playing field for her among the wealthier students, and he would apply for any new positions which may help with getting Soraya letters of recommendations from influential figures in SK, though ironically, this constant moving did little to bolster her grades.
Instead, Soraya's main talent became working the constantly rotating cast of students she was shoved into class with. She taught herself to be interesting, enigmatic, played up an "Orientalism" when her father was stationed in western Europe, and turned Sufi when the family was relocated to Seoul. Soraya never had a social group of her own, but she was an adept social chameleon, feeling at home with rugby players and IC code writers, goody-two-shoes corp worshippers and the synth-leather jacket wearing bad kids who stunk of deep weed.
Despite her mediocre school performance her junior and senior year, Soraya was accepted to an SK sponsored university that offered Associate's Degrees in things like "Human Relations" with an emphasis in "Cost-Benefit Analysis" or other such drek, but Soraya couldn't stand it. Two months in, and she was back to Korea, back to the clubs that had soured her last few years of high school, and back to (X), the boy her parents were probably right about.
For the next few years Soraya had a number of jobs: bartender, dancer, and eventually hotel concierge for a mid-level gray market joint. It was there that Soraya's talent with people really took hold, and where she was exposed to the shadows. Cautious by nature, it was another year before she entered in the workforce her self, but to be honest, the first time a fixer had uttered the words, "Nice work, omae," when she had approached him with a bit of information about a certain street sam who was starting to show the signs of a nasty twitch, she was hooked.
Crunch forthcoming. I have a pretty good idea of what she's going to look like mechanically, but I want to sit with her story for a day or two longer before I put anything down. I'm thinking pretty augmented and mundane. I like the idea of her having to use her wits and smarts in a culture that really respects magic.
