It was nice to feel the wind in his face and around his glasses. The Suzuki Mirage ran smooth and Isaint started to relax a bit. Whoever was after the Doctor would probably not risk his life on a high speed chase. Only when traffic forced them to slow down again it would become interesting.

So far the run had been manageable. He listened a bit to the matrix chatter if the campus security had already released a statement regarding the severe destruction and a bunch of bodies. While he was at it, he sent Snow Crash a few pictures he had taken of th opposing team.
<<Snow, could you try to find out who those jokers and what kind of runners they were? I'd do it myself, but I don't trust my bike's autopilot and I try to keep watch of the group. We might learn something about the rest of their group or the kind of opposition we might have to contend with when we reach London.>>

Isaint had to admit: It felt a lot better to be once again the protector instead of the infiltrator. It was the harder job, but it went along far better with his nature.
When they reached the outskirts of London he received the Frenchman's message:
<<Isaint here, roger. I'll take point and scout our way. We wouldn't want a fiasco like '73 in Istambul>>

Snow Crash was mulling a lot of things over, it wasn't often that he found himself in Matrix Overwatch, events had over-taken him and it had taken a long time to be able to respond. What he needed was more speed, more speed int he matrix and better efficiency with Marks.

The message from Isaint broke him from his musings

Isaint to Snow Crash <<Snow, could you try to find out who those jokers and what kind of runners they were? I'd do it myself, but I don't trust my bike's autopilot and I try to keep watch of the group. We might learn something about the rest of their group or the kind of opposition we might have to contend with when we reach London.>>

Clever find, and not a bad idea.

Snow Crash to Isaint <<Good thinking, I'll do some poking around and let everyone know what I find.>>

With no fancy driving going on the orc decker is easily able to open some AR windoes and start searching for information.

I'll take a moment to swap my overclocking from Sleaze to Data processing.
Matrix Search: Opposing runner identification. Browser program halves search times.
Computers 6 + Intuition 5
Matrix Search: 11d6t5 4 hits
Data Processing limit 6

in case this is an extended test, I'll do a couple of extra rolls.

Computers 6 + Intuition 5 - Extended Test 1
Matrix Search Extended Test: 10d6t5 2 hits
total hits 6

Computers 6 + Intuition 5 - Extended Test 2
Matrix Search Extended Test: 9d6t5 5 hits
total hits 11

I think I checked Jackpoint or something on that last one  :o

Swapping back to his leather Jacket and helmet Solo felt that it was time to test his new drones in the actions. <<@all - I am sending my new toys for some recon on the safe-house. I am also covering matrix and Astral - it should give us some info very quickly while we do some logistics.  PS... if you have some popcorn PLEASE bring!

He sent the 3 flying eyes toward the safehouse to try and see that it is indeed clear, the brand new RCC was a simple model but it could run 3 autosofts and share them. Stealth, perception and some noise reduction. Were his choices:

Drone tests:
3#9d6t5: 3 # 1 [9d6t5=3, 3, 2, 1, 2, 4, 1, 5, 4] 4 [9d6t5=5, 1, 6, 3, 3, 5, 2, 6, 2] 4 [9d6t5=3, 5, 1, 3, 4, 4, 6, 6, 6]

Drone perception: 3#9d6t5 1 4 4

Then he casted the improve intuition spell along with heighten concern and entered the matrix scanning it for anything suspicious, weapons, cyber ware equipment that is characteristic of shadworunners anything that may imply an ambush or armed people in the vicinity of the safehouse. He also took new attention to drones of any size in the vicinity.

Matrix Perception in hot sim: 21d6t5 13
21d6t5: 13 [21d6t5=6, 6, 6, 5, 6, 2, 6, 3, 4, 4, 3, 5, 6, 1, 6, 6, 1, 6, 5, 1, 6]
the maximum is unfortunately just 6.

When he returned to meat space, the drones where already close to the target Solo felt it was better to augment them with a spirit and his other spirit was out of range and the connection with it was lost due to it's blending into humanity so aggressively. He casted the improved willpower and struggled the deep concentration that two spells required for him. With his mental state augmented summoning the spirit was relatively safe and indeed he was able to do so without taking drain.
"Go to the safehouse and report to me anything unusual, magical or any living people inside and in the short vicinity of the warehouse, augmented or awakened are a priority. Stay in the astral near the safehouse and let me know how things change" was his instruction to the spirit that did not even materialize.

Improve intuition:
15d6t5: 5 [15d6t5=2, 1, 6, 2, 6, 5, 3, 2, 5, 2, 2, 3, 1, 5, 4]
Improve Intuition Spell: 15d6t5 5
Solo Drain(2): 15d6t5 9 (drain + improve intuition)

Next spell was improve willpower, after the matrix search: (sustaining of intuition negated with heighten concern)
15d6t5: 6 [15d6t5=3, 3, 2, 4, 6, 5, 2, 3, 6, 3, 6, 4, 6, 3, 5]
Improve Willpower Spell: 15d6t5 6
Solo Drain: 19d6t5 3
no drain, now when Solo has 9 willpower and 10 intuition he can summon another spirit of man safely, corrected by Aria, the heighten concern only reduce -2 of the sustaining bonus spirit of man will have 17 -2 15 dice to summon, Solo asks for level 7 and get level 8 due to spirit whisperer.
15d6t5: 6 [15d6t5=1, 4, 6, 4, 3, 1, 3, 3, 6, 1, 5, 2, 6, 5, 5]
Summon spirit of man force 7: 15d6t5 6
spirit defense: 8d6t5 2
Solo Drain(3) (spirit): 19d6t5 5

4 services and no drain. The spirit sent for astral sensing - probobly a remote service depending on how close to the safe house we are. The role is mediocre but let's hope it is enough.
17d6t5: 3 [17d6t5=1, 6, 3, 4, 3, 3, 2, 5, 6, 4, 2, 1, 1, 2, 3, 4, 3]
Astral Senssing: 17d6t5 3

It had been a bit awkward getting to this point, the logistics of moving four people from one city to another, but the task had been accomplished.  The boyfriend had been removed from the equation quickly, before he had seen too many faces.  Smiley had no idea what the level of paranoia was among his teammates, but he was not going to risk the boy being killed "because he knew too much."  In the initial confusion following the siblings reunion, the Amerind had put the teenager out the same way he had the guard.  A few strips of duct tape and a smashed commlink later and the punk was another hard partyer sleeping it off in a dumpster.

Gathering the family in the van had been another odd moment, the boy was excited for the adventure, but sleepy, the daughter was completely at a loss on the situation, wondering, as only a teenager would, whether she was still in trouble for sneaking out or not.  The parents had not been his concern, but the Primary looked to have taken the worst of the evening.  Smiley had quickly turned away from the gathered family, and towards a long pull on his flask to ease his tightening throat.

He played the co-ordinated game of leap-frog with the other outriders, his eyes sweeping their surroundings at all times, quietly acting the professional.  He tried to quiet his mind too, but he knew tonight was going to be bad for him, he hoped it was close to being over, he really needed drown out the memories before they got too real.

When London was in sight, Isaint again send a message, this time to his two fellow outriders Smiley and Duke:
<<We are getting nearer to the zone with hightened threat level. We are now going to engage in a manouvre called Travelling Overwatch. What this means is: The two of you now start following at the distance from the main transport, I indicate on your AR. I'll take overwatch position. That way you'll be in optimal position to react to a surprise attack.>>

The message was followed by a quick AR scematic, so the two knew where and how to position.

Again engaging in Small Unit Tactics:
TRAVELING OVERWATCH
Successes Required: 2
Description: Similar to Bounding Overwatch, Traveling Overwatch is a preventative maneuver. It’s meant to be used when speed is essential and best intel indicates contact with an enemy is unlikely. When the team is in motion, one—or preferably two—members take a trailing position and periodically stop to carefully survey their surroundings. If the main body of the unit is attacked, the overwatch pair can respond with either long range-support or engage in a flanking maneuver. In using this tactic, a drone or spirit will either complement or replace a team member in the rear overwatch position. The drawback to this tactic is that the rear overwatch has a chance of being separated from the main group or being eliminated without the main group realizing. This is why drone and spirit use has become popular in this position. For this maneuver, the team leader is always the team member in the overwatch position.
Benefits: + 1 on all Perception Tests and + 2 to the overwatcher’s Initiative roll if combat is initiated.

[Thursday June 18th, 2076, ~01:15, Soho, London]

Al steered the dirty white panel van through the graffiti-riddled canyons of Soho’s lanes and alleys, following the lead of the outriders. He couldn’t always see them, but he knew at least one of them had him in sight all the time, and he had all their positions on the heads-up the stretched across his windshield, a local map overlay piped in from his comm. Isaint was choreographing their movements in some sort of paramilitary street dance, but Al had to hand it to the ork, he was keeping them all in striking distance of the drop point without ever repeating a pattern and without looking like they were all together.

He’d been happy when the lights of London had come into view. Unlike the drive out to Oxford, the trip back had been pure misery. First Doctor Dick had complained the music was too loud. Hurting his ears or something. Like he’d never been flashbanged before. Then there were a couple of Chinese fire drills as they moved the whole damned clan into the van. Smartest play, but that didn’t make it a laugh. Right off the bat, the damned pimply-faced kid had almost lost a hand trying to pet Spike. Then little miss too-cute-for-proper clothes had started in on the smoke. Child didn’t even have sense enough to wear a full set of clothes, and here she was on him about a few cigarettes. He’d tried ignoring her, but then she was off about how many poor Africans could be fed if they converted all the tobacco fields into damned rice paddies. So he’d put down a window and then of course Miss Precious was too cold. Eventually her bellyaching had taken all the pleasure out of the thing and he’d tossed the butt out the window, only to be lectured about the environment or some such. And then there were the potty stops. And the hell that broke loose with the wife when he’d handed them an empty beer can to use.

At least he’d had a few cans left that weren’t empty, but they were soon gone.

So now, the oil drum fires in the alleys and the passed out drunks on the street were a promise of eventually getting off the clock. He hadn't slept in a few days, and he was starting to feel due. Solo was in back living up to his name, scouting the drop about every way a body could without actually using a body. Then they’d send in an advance team. He had to hand it to these people, they covered their bases. Not like the seat-of-their-pants jobs he’d done in Seattle.

Well, they’d soon see how much good it did them. In his experience, the only thing surer than bad things happening was the eternal truth that, no matter what you did, they’d happen when you weren’t looking for them.

[Thursday June 18th, 2076, ~01:15, Soho, London]

Snow Crash was content to stick to his car pouring over the data on the hostile team, he'd made a few calls and found a place where he could get some of the latest cyberdeck mods. His deck now faster and tougher than before, granting him a bit of an edge if he got stuck in VR like that again.

Now as he was driving through one of the rougher sections of London, his AR hidden just under the seat and the front of his jacket loose to quickly access his MP. He keeps his eye on the van and the approaches. He'd already seen this run go south in a major way very rapidly once already, and was nervous about what tricks the drake they'd left behind them might be able to pull.

WTF!? Could the Frenchman be right about feeling the two had met before? Under which circumstances?

<<'73 has long been forgotten. Want to explain what you considered a fiasco?>>
Of course, the Frenchman had no clue of what may have had happened in Istanbul. Neither could he remember ever being there. He tried to focus for an instant; digging in the darkness that was his memory. Istanbul, Istanbul.... If he ever was there, he must remember glimpse of it....

His effort was interrupted when he heard Solo. He called on all channels:
<<Solo, what do you think you are doing? Where is Rachel?>>

<<ISaint, Mel and I will enter the parking lot and help secure the area, then. >>

Solo smiles when he gets the Frenchman text: <<I am now with the whole family, I am not sure what's more amusing the drone feeds or their family dynamics... The father seems a bit shaken up... I think the main team showed him more than he expected. The only thing I really miss is a cold beer and popcorn but I hate to ask for favors twice in the same day... I should have thought about it when I called my friend for the drones.  >>

Isaint replied: <<Roger, I'll just get my rifle from Snow. Not that I'll use it in close quarters, but it might deter some unaffiliated scavengers and could come in handy in a siege. And yeah I know, it was only a fiasco for me. You damn well taught me not to get to close to the principal or into their bed for that matter.>>

He opened a privat channel to the Frenchman: <<If that's a peace offer I'm glad to accept. I understand that we both were doing just the job we were hired to do. No hard feelings. Besides I know that the Bozkurtlar reneged on their deal with you and tried to have you killed after you brought them the girl. I'm not mad at you - after all if it wasn't for you she would have died in their headquarters. And I surely wouldn't have gotten her home if you had decided to pursue us instead of wasting your former employers.
When this is over, I'll buy you a drink and you can tell me why the hell they call you the Frenchman when you were clearly in the Foreign Legion..."

Isaint did as he said: He got his equipment, but slung the rifle across his shoulders. He opened his coat, so that he had unrestricted access to his various holsters. He waited for the others before entering the presumed safe house.

[Tobbis -Wednesday June 17th, 2076 - Circling Safehouse at a safe distance away - Kid Extraction team - Current condition 2 Stun damage -In VR- Silent -
As they moved on up, Tobbis stopped by a small shop to pick up a few new gizmos, Particularly of note was an AI package for his car, having found that it was very difficult having to constantly change where the car was going instead of just telling it to follow a car. In addition he got a small fly spy which as he goes to join the group flies around and above the rest of the caravan, checking for signs of danger. Isometric views were always one of the best ways of doing strategy games after all, and he found it to be no different in real life, cept you could die.

<< I'm scanning the area for signals of hidden icons and what information I've got on them. Will be posting in through my feed at chat room Where's Waldo, 77484, password is san diego>>

If anyone was as well versed as Tobbis in some of the things you could find on the matrix, they'd find he was fairly well into old cartoons and shows. After all one of his other call names they'd see him broadcast was Mr. Peabody.

I'm looking right now for Icons running silent around the base and firearm icons not running silent.

[Tobbis -Wednesday June 17th, 2076 - Circling Safehouse at a safe distance away - Kid Extraction team - Current condition 2 Stun damage -In VR- Silent - Solo's Chatroom]
<<Alright, Coming in.>> he replies back to Solo. The Changeling Technomancer's persona steps into Solo's room, Looking something like a large wolf with heavy metal armor on him and a rather large sword on his back. The great thing about the matrix is you could be anyone, anything, it was a paradise like no other.

Moving to sit down, he changed his persona to look just a tad more like him, shrinking down to a small size, but still within the normal bounds of the matrix, soon setting a case of beer and popcorn down. <<While these might not have actual sustenance to them, I think I got the flavor information right. So if you're running hot, you'll be able to taste some of the best beer ever. And its free!>>

Soon with a flick another couple of screens appear. The few cameras in his car to make sure that no one did anything bad, the car's sensors, Hal's camera, Solo's camera, and most importantly. his own fly spy's vision.
