...OK a kind of silly character.

Played her in 3E and she was a lot of fun.  Unfortunately some of the rules changes made the character a little more tricky to design as some Bio and Cyber she had no longer exists as well as changes to how some skills work.

Leela's backstory is rather complex and thus too long to discuss in detail here. Basically she was once an exceptional child prodigy (keyboard music) who after her nation was invaded (during which she lost her family) and subsequently occupied, became a member of her people's underground. A number of her bio and genetic implants were part of an experimental procedure to save her life and help her recover while she was kept underground (The occupation force mounted a "cultural cleansing" in an attempt wipe her nation's identity off the map and assimilate her people).  As she recovered, her course of study was no longer music, but instead the "art" of guerilla warfare. As her late father was a renowned pyrotechnician, explosives were nothing new to her so that is the route she took, eventually convincing the Cell's commander to let her join the fight.  Hence she became the cell's demolitions expert as well as the occupation forces' most "elusive" saboteur, the latter thanks to the fact she was physically underdeveloped and not only looked, but acted, like just an innocent young girl.

During a mission that went sour, she and her compatriots were extracted by a group of mercenaries, the leader of which recognised her as he had heard her perform back before the war.  As the "fee" for the rescue, he took Leela out of the war torn country to the UCAS where she ended up in Chicago

...apologies.  I had discussed the character on another thread and someone was interested in seeing a post of her.

Besides, she is a Missions character and therefore cannot have the  Cyclopean Eye or Unusual Hair Qualities as Surge based characters are not allowed. Plus, she'd need an Ares Redline Laser which is impossible to get at Chargen and rather difficult even after the character enters play.

Though I admit it would be an "interesting" experiment to work up the Futurama character.

...[Leela says]

"Aww, looks like nobody like Leela as I  don't have purple hair, big boobies, and one eye...

...guess I'll just put on my Guy Fawkes ballistic mask and go blow up the Houses of Parliament then, heeheehee

There's just not much to criticise to be honest.
It is a well rounded character with a lot of potential. Ware, skills, and abilities complement each other nicely. I'd probably moved a point of willpower to intuition but it is not necessary.
I think that's the demo expert done 'right'. Very organic.

@celondon: Wrong girl.

....yep. she was the base model for the character (even to the way she spoke).

back in the 3E days, I was originally designing a character loosely based on Ace from Dr. Who as I wanted a demolitions expert with a twist who wasn't just some hardcore ex-merc. While working on the backstory, 5th Element came on the telly.  I decided to take a break as I love that film. Afterwards I looked what I had already written, crumpled it and that was when Leela was born.  I especially loved Leeloo's almost child like nature and outlook in spite of her being one of the most powerful beings in the universe.

Leela is very similar, seemingly innocent and child like, but if you crossed her, she'd blow up the chair you were sitting on.

Totally shameless little girl.

Her backstory is quite detailed.

Firstly. My compliments to you Sir on this very well rounded character. I have a few quick points at first which might result in some cost reduction or optimization and then I'll throw out a more broad critique. Please take this as a constructive comment as that is how I intend it. Also its Halibell if your wondering!

1. I do believe that unless your agility is higher than your will power that adding agile defender isn't actually netting you any actual advantage. Some of my other recommendations might lead you to still want to keep this but I thought it was the smallest change which would help you so I started with it.

2. I think its really cool that your character can and is using the performance skill which, in my opinion could see more uses. Consider for a moment though that you have chosen to play the classical piano with the performance skill but your calculation seems to be based on the concept that you would use charisma. I think that you could argue that this use of performance, like dancing, is just as dependent on your ability to actually strike the right keys at the right time and thus should run off of agility.
-Thus I propose for your consideration that perhaps you should move two of your Attribute points to Agility as it will not only make your Demolitions expert sneakier, a better shot, a faster runner and potentially adds to your defense but also make your Performance skill better. I realize that it drops your con and etiquette but it could be a good idea. It would also be cheaper to raise charisma or skills up and start with 6 Agility than to try to raise agility as it is.

3. As far as the Qualities go I think you should consider the addiction quality to one of the drugs that you use often. It could replace other ones that you may not like as much. If you get the Geneware Narco you are able to gain greater benefit from drugs and greater resistance to increasing your addiction once you have them.
-Even if you don't take any of the other advice in this point you should definitely look at making the drugs you buy and use Pharmaceutical grade as it reduces the addiction threshold by one for double the cost of the drug. In the case of cram its only an extra 10 bucks for a significant decrease in addiction potential

Well that is all that I thought of when I looked at it so good luck. See you at game

...some interesting suggestions.

If I was able to use the A priority, (which I would have used on either Attributes or Resources) She would have turned out a bit tougher.  Leela is built on Sum to Ten which is is mmm...allowable in Missions provided the character isn't imbalanced. After discussing with some members of the group, she would be allowed if I created her as a B (Attributes) , B (Skills), B (Resources), D (Metatype), E (Magic/Resonance), build.  Hence, she doesn't get the maximum value in any area which made for a lighter build than the 3E version of her which used the point build system.

Her augmented Agility is 6, which would add two extra dice to her full defence over using Willpower giving, her a total pool of 14 dice instead of 12.

Yes it will be expensive to raise Agility with Karma, but then Attributes and skills are all she can improve on anyway. As she has the Jack of all Trades Quality,  she gets a break in learning new/improving skills up to rating 5

I was primarily looking at using the base Performance skill more for Acting to help supplement her Con (Fast Talk) skill. Unlike in previous editions, all specialisations of Performance are now Charisma based so Agility (even though it would make more sense for keyboard or dance performance) does not come into play there.  Since she is a Missions character, I have to design and play her "by the book".

As demolitions is a fairly "dangerous" occupation (not just from the risk of blowing ones self up, but a legally as well) dumping the Signature quality would probably be a good thing as using explosives is not very"subtle".

For an Addiction a mild level with Cram would make perfect sense as that is her combat "drug of choice" to get that extra little boost to initiative. As again Leela is a Missions Character, she can only get street grade drugs unless she has a specific contact (who can be gained through play).  I will have to wait for the Genemod since there wasn't enough resources to go around

Originally I gave her Blighted: 6 Months as she lived a fair part of her life in a war zone where tac nukes and chemical agents were used. As she has a decent edge (5), I could give her that again instead.

So basically the adjustments would be:

Qualities: Dump: Signature,  Add:  Mild Addiction to Cram, (4K) and Blighted 6 Months (5K)

Attributes: no change

Skills: no change

Karma: remove 1 Karma (2,000¥ from resoruces to make up the -1 deficit in Negative Qualities .

How about making her older? I think that would be fun since you did play her back in 3E :)

....If she were she'd, be a Prime Runner character as she amassed over 200 Karma before she "retired" from running and became a classical keyboard "Novastar" the likes of which the world had not seen in centuries.  Finally having a stable life, there isn't very much that would lure that her back into the shadows, particularly as she is the inheritor of her late adoptive mother''s estate in the UK along with a seat in the House of Lords as well as has a daughter, and founded a successful controlled demolitions company (long story). Hence she has far too much Public Awareness to go sneaking around in the shadows blowing things up.

Even so, she still would pretty much look like a young girl and similar personality the new version has (let's just call it a "genetic issue", very long story again).

Effectively, she wouldn't work or be allowed in a Missions setting.

As there was too much revisionism to the world setting, since 2062 (yeah I know, they say 2065) from and since System Failure, this new version of "Leela" supersedes the 3E one.

..OK a couple other ideas.

As the Hardware skill primarily relates to computers commlinks & the such (basically what a deckmiester would work with) , I thought of dropping this and instead putting three build points to Armourer skill with a specialisation in explosives. (giving her a pool of 10) and either spreading the other three skill BPs among the remaining skills, or purchasing something like Industrial Mechanic skill with a specialisation in Power Generation Systems or Automotive Mechanic (for sabotaging vehicles and setting car bombs up),

One of her roles in the resistance was as a saboteur.

Thoughts?
