In Shadowrun I'm not sure how big a Middle Class home would be. I know right now the character I need this information for lives with her adoptive brother in New York in Middle Class accomindations and I'm not sure how big the house or condo would be in 2077 New York.

3 bedroom 2 bathroom?
4 bedroom 2 bathroom?
2 Bedroom 1 bathroom?

Middle class seems like it would accomidate at least 2 people with a minimum of 1 bathroom. It should suit your needs Foxcat-san.

Ok thank you. I was hoping for something close to three bedrooms at least with one bathroom. I know houses vary depending on city/state/country etc

Thanks Raiderjoseph!

Sixth world populations are the same, but living space is at a premium unless you're ok with squatting in one of the numerous ghost towns, abandoned regions, or polluted housing areas that border industrial zones. Arcologies and enclaves will be better, but middle class (something that had virtually disappeared) is a reasonably safe and moderately clean shoebox per family, at best.

A home, as in a detached dwelling, would probably be outside the reach of most two-person families, unless it had some mitigating factor such as those already mentioned were present.
More common would be an apartment/condo in some proto-arcology, or a pod complex. If one were to find one that accomodated larger metatypes, it would give a bit more space, at the expense of odd looks from neighbors and things like chest-height countertops.
There's probably just enough value in providing the illusion of separation for megacorps to subsidize the construction of townhouses, and possibly even some really inexpensive tract housing. Probably nearly all prefab. Likely also nearly as easy to take down as to put up, in order that they can be leased/upgraded as with cars IRL, which is probably the most common model of financing them.
Housing, though not rare, will still seem tenuous, and one bad performance review away from being lost, to most wageslaves.

YMMV, of course.

I'd agree with that. The house with white picket fence is not that likely but I'd imagine most middle class lifestyles are the 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom, 1 carpark and up range. I can rent one of those for 1,500 give or take a month here and around 3,600 in Sydney. Throw in food, infalation and 5k nuyen seems reasonable enough especially if its a dual income family earning 10k and then saving a little to buy, paying a little more on rent or what have you.

It isn't "class" specific but you could go back to 1E-Sprawl Sites Sourcebook for some info.

3 different "Residence" maps/layouts.

All are Apartment,  All are 1 Bathroom,  All have optional balcony/patio.

Small = Living Room + Bedroom  (Roughly 3x10 Meters total or 330ft)

Medium = 2 Bedrooms w/ open concept Living, Kitchen, & Dining,   (7x22 Meters total or 1600ft)

Large = Large Living Room w/ Bar, Formal Dining Room, Separate Kitchen, 2 Bedrooms  (16x25 Meters Total or 4200ft)

You "could" translate that into Low-Medium-High if you wanted to.

So middle class is a 1600 ft apartment with 2 bedrooms.

In the 4th edition source book Runner's companion there are the advanced lifestyle rules and under necessities 'middle' (which I would assume means middle class) there's the following (from what I can see it's close to what Tarislar posted from the 1st edition source book):

Quote
Your home is comfortable and cozy. You have stable utilities, although
the occasional peak-usage brownout still occurs. Your home
has room for a small family, with perhaps an extra guest room.
Examples: You have a 90–100 square meter home with a
small yard or an apartment with patio/porch. It comes with a
designated parking space in an underground garage or a garage
attached to the home. Soy is prepared on a multi-function soy
processor and is almost indistinguishable from the real thing, and
you can occasionally splurge on real food like coffee on Sundays.
You can afford bottled water, you have centrally controlled appliances
that work, such as a laundry machine and dishwasher, and
you have mid-priced new clothing, or items you bought on sale
from Mortimer of London or Vashon Island.

Thank you everyone for your input! This really helps out a lot! Middle class is kind of dead/dying right now anyhow. I hope it gets revived but now I can just picture what a middle class home would look like.

Do keep in mind, if you have other people living with you, that is extra money you're paying for lifestyle costs.  Part of that is food, utilities, clothing and the like, but it also includes rent for a place that can support more people.

A higher lifestyle does not mean a home that can support more people.  It means a home that can support the same number of people more comfortably, with greater stability and security.

How big that is largely depends on where you live.  In Seattle, Denver, and other large urban sprawls that most games take place in, that means space is very much at a premium, and you're most likely talking a decent apartment at middle class, unless you go way outside the sprawl for a small house, along with commutes in the hours range.

You said your game was in New York?

If it is, at Middle Class, you are talking a small crappy appartment in any area of worth....

Or a moderate sized place on the out edges of the city. (Which is honestly where they do probably live, given how 'locked down' NYC is.)

There have been several books that talk about just how messed up NYC/Manhatten area is.  The best is Rotten Apple (4e book) for pure flavour and description. And the other is........

Where am I going? And why am I in a hand basket ???

Check out Sprawl Sites if you can find a copy of it.  That 1st edition book gives floor plans and prices.  It may not be accurate anymore but it will give you some ideas.

Reaver might be thinking of Season 3 of Missions, which was set in New York.

The Neo-Anarchist's Guide to North America had a bit on New York, as did Shadows of North America. Neither of them were as extensive as The Rotten Apple.

Battle of Manhattan is an adventure set in Manhattan, but I haven't read it so I don't know what sort of setting details it contains.
