When Rex was back in his body he replied to the message: <<Alright, but before that I'll try to locate Bernie through the Astral - maybe I can talk to him and we can avoid the trip. I really can't state how very much I don't want to physically enter that zone. The background count could kill me or - worse - disrupt the shapechange spell.
But it's better to be prepared for the worst, so let's get some protection while we are at it.>>

Back in the van he took his time to prepare himself, increasing his mental acuity as well as his resistance, anchoring them on his body.

"Yeah, for sure, you need to get going. About reaching out to the Geistratten. Yes, I could put you in touch with them, but I don't have a direct access. So I'll do you one, and reach out to my contact - and call you if I got anything... But to be honest, it generally takes days before I get one of them to either call me or drop by here. I got the impression that, by then, this all mess will be resolved... One way or the other."

Valentin, at the same time, shares an ARO with the location of the "gear place": apparently it's a former restaurant nearby the wall of the SOX, in the north of Zweibrücken. The place was called Brückenpfeiler. Matrix clearly states the place is closed, and there is no available pictures of it. Prago then asks the runners for a commlink to join him, in case he managed to get in touch with the Geistratten in time.

The runner heads back to their van, where Rex is casting all the spells in preparation of his astral trip. Once the van is moving, he jumps into the astral, trying to get his bearing, so he can fly to Metz.

Zweibrücken is next to the SOX, but the astral place here is still pretty clean. It is thus fairly easy to spot, on the horizon, the distorted and twisted part of the space associated with the SOX. Sadly, because he never went there, and neither to Metz, Rex can not just "beam over there", and he needs to fly at a relatively slow pace (astral-wise), to keep track of his position in relation to the physical plan. But he is quite good at doing so.

However, Rex is quickly stopped in his trip to the SOX. Indeed, he barely reached the border, that he spot astral form patrolling along the border. MET2000 is certainly taking no chance and does not either people to have an "astral peak", but also anything unwanted "coming out" of there. From where he astrally stands, there is at least two astral forms patrolling nearby. Rex flies along the zone border in both South and North direction, but can not find a less control spot. Wherever he goes, there is always at least two astral entities who can spot him crossing the border.

To make matter worth, MET2000 magical team apparently spent some time aligning the border to their magic user, and there is, on top of everything, a background count, diminishing Rex's ability.

About money: I'm not doing book-keeping, but I expect you guys to pay his due to Valentin. Assuming you do so, you add him as a next contact, with a Loyalty of 1 and Connection Rating of 2.

Some side note on Astral sneaking/perception - as a RAW are a bit lacking in this regards. My interpretation of being "sneaky" in the Astral, is that you use the same Sneak skills as in the physical world - with, of course, your astral agility. Being spot in the Astral, is following the same logic - ie Perception + Intuition. I used to (mis)use Assenssing for this, but nowdays I've limited Assessing at what it is for - reading aura and nothing else.

In the astral, any (magical) bonuses that applied to be sneaky - where it is Invisibility or Concealement, does also applies. Again, AFAIK, RAW is not clear on an invisible character being also invisible in the Astral, but I find that for game balance it is just make more sense. Being utterly visible on the astral, and invisible on the physical world, makes the spell useless, but also, bring no way to counter astral perception (short of background count).

Regarding background count associated to the wall, I'll spare you the assessing test, it's 2. Last rule point: whatever the astral form are they are going to teamwork their Perception test.

Side note: I'm not trying to block your character to go look for Bernie astrally, it's actually a pretty good idea. It's just that crossing the border of the SOX has to be hard. Part of the reason corps have secret facility there is for the astral protection it provides, due to the radiation, but also the investment made in setting up a "shared" perimeter. Also note that once the border crossed, you'll have to do a couple more "astral bearing" test before getting to Metz - and hopefully find Bernie.

Last item - I saw a spirit cast an Increased Reflexes on Rex, but I'm not sure the bonuses would applies to the Astral space - or is it clearly stated somewhere in a FAQ or RAW ? If not I would rule against it, stating that the spell is making your "physical body" faster, not your astral one - but if there is a RAW/FAQ that contredicts me, I'll allow it.

@Waywalker, to keep things going while Rex is in the Astral, let's deal with your activity at Brückenpfeiler in parallel, if you don't mind :) (I know that neither Rex, nor Waywalker are "good" in meat space, but let's abstract that, as this is not about rolling dice here.

In the meantime, Waywalker's van is parking nearby the Brückenpfeiler. The place used to look nice. A small "maisonette", with an old fashion looks, and with wood beams and red brick, so typical of the region. However, it's look closed, abandoned, and not taking care of for a while. Some bricks are missing, a lot of tags are covering the wall, and the outside part of the restaurant - the "Biergarten", is completely trashed. All the entrance looks firmly closed. If Prago had not said this was the place, Waywalker would have not suspected there was anything going there - expect maybe for a pack of ghouls or some squatters...

That's ok.
I had expected them to use mana barriers but that makes sense too.

If concealment works for that purpose on the Astral I'd have my spirit use her last service for that too.
But all in all my LOG isn't that hot, so sneaking will probably not work.

Dismiss Spirit of Men F6 and try to call an F8 Spirit
Summon F8 Spirit of Men: 14d6t5 6 [14d6t5=6, 6, 6, 4, 2, 6, 2, 6, 2, 4, 1, 6, 2, 1]
Spirit Resist Spirit Resist F8 Spirit of Men: 8d6t5 1
Wow, 5 services
Drain Resist: 21d6t5 7
No Drain

Ok, gaining concealment from an F8 Spirit means -8 to the perception test of the others

Sneaking (Astraly): 8d6t5 3

Rex returned a bit frustrated to his body where the Princes still waited: 'I thank you for your service oh beautiful one and bid you farewell.'

<<Bad news, the border is better secured than expected. I'll give it another try with a bit more power.>>

He concentrated and dared for the first time to call upon a Kami that was quite a bit above his station. He was aware that incuring the displeasure of the Thunderlord would most likely have him bleeding on the floor, but to his own surprise he felt only the gentlest of resistance and the Kami, wreathed in clouds of rain and lightning appeared before him in an instant.
'Oh High Lord of the three Thunders, I thank you for coming to my aid in my hour of need. Please shield me from notice in the spirit realm and watch over my earthly form. Thank you.'

"Sure this place has seen better times...as me. If something is going on here I'll find out."
Waywalker had his Agents look for some clues of Matrix activity in the near vicinity.
Then he jumped in the Fly Spy.

In the astral, the appearance of The High Lord of the Three Thunder reveled all his power and glory. It looks intensely at Rex for an instant at Rex, like he is assessing the mage, or even decide if it should comply or on the contrary defies his order. But the spirit finally acknowledges the mage order, without a word - just a roll of thunder echoing from the depth of the astral space. And just like that, the astral projection of Rex is suddenly surrounded by waving shades, that somehow conceal his presence. Surrounded by the might of the Kami, Rex finally attempt to cross the astral border of the SOX.

Spirit's teamwork on Perception: 12d6t5 5
Leader Spirit Perception: 17d6t5 7

@Jack_Spade gosh, I'm sorry, they both rolled pretty well... Please roll Astral Initiative, for both you and the High Lord of Three Thunder.

Sadly, despite the mightiness of his Kami ally, the two spirit of Air patrolling immediately spots the concealed astral form. While one of the spirit stands by, clearly reporting to his master the trespassing, and looking for other potential intruder, the other simply charges on Rex...

In the meantime, in the physical world, Waywalker is safely back in his favorite place: the Matrix. While maneuvering his Fly Spy to do a little reckon around the house, he also uses his deck to search for nearby activity. There is still a lot of houses nearby being inhabited, and many of them have "honest to God" devices, all displaying broadcasting their ID (and often their owner SIN). However, in the mist of all this legitimate activity, there is a number of devices running silent around him. He would need to put MARKs on them to locate them exactly, but he has strong gut feeling that they are, not surprisingly, inside the abandoned restaurant.

@Waywalker now that you have learn there is running silent devices nearby, you need to roll an other Matrix Perception to learn more about the devices.

In the meantime, the Fly Spy finds a way into the building - sneaking into a crack in the wall. Once inside, however the Fly Spy connection suddenly degrades quickly...

@Waywalker your drone just entered a jammed area (Noise: 6). Please roll a surprise test (Reaction + Intuition) - if you get 3s, you are not surprise, and you can compensate for noise with your RCC. Note that, AFAIK, your Fly Spy has a Device Rating of 2 - if the Noise rating is above 2, your drone is disconnected from the Matrix (ie you are losing contact with it).

Compensating for the jammer, Waywalker restore the connection and the feeds to his drone, and discovers that the inside of the abandoned restaurant is indeed something else. In what used to be the main dining room, there is now bunch of stands, each apparently selling some restricted or illegal gears - all clearly aimed at exploring the SOX. On the left of what used to the main door, a large troll is selling can of water, doubled with radiation protection, along with military ration. Nearby him, a small, weasel-looking human, appears to be haggling hardly with a pissed Ork - clearly a street sam, about the price of a HazMat suit. Not sure who is buying or selling, but Waywalker drone's sensor clearly picks up the sentence, from the small guy : "At this price, I cut my own throat..." - and wisely decided to focus his attention elsewhere.

Behind what used to be a counter, a dwarf seating on high stool, appears to be selling a lot of electronics hardware. Behind him, the bottles has been replaced by a collection of drone, commlink and other electronics devices. most of them are both shutdown and in pretty "used" state. Nearby him, a scrawny woman, with a long nose and a rather (ugly) leather jacket appears to be selling reagents and potions. When the drone flies nearby, it can even picks up that "it's a detox potion, specially aims at removing radiation, buddy, if you want to cross the SOX, you'll need that". The customer is a rather snobbish elf, wearing a fancy suit from Mortimer of London. He does not appears at all convinced by her sales pitch, and simply - in a very "Spock-ish" way, rather an eyebrow at the comment.

I'm not going to list every gear you guys can found here - just do an availability checks for any item you want to purchase (and I would advise to throw some money at it to increase chance). If the roll is successful, somebody here has the goods otherwise you are out of luck. Pre-Edge and Post Edge is allowed, if needed.

In the meantime, Waywalker cyberdeck is gathering data on the numerous running silent devices. A bunch of commlinks, a cyberarm - most likely belonging to the ork street sam, but also some drones, and one cyberdeck. All of this makes Waywalker suddenly a bit worried - what if somebody has also spot him ?

@Haywire, in case somebody wants to spot your (I assume) running silent cyberdeck (which is also I assume running the PAN with the running silent drone) can you roll Logic + Sleaze ?

Not to nitpick you ruling, but wouldn't all observers even if they use teamwork suffer the same penalties on their checks (so -8 from concealment)

In any case, as soon as Rex is spotted, he'll jump back into his body. There is no sense in fighting an army:

Rex Astral Ini: 18+3d6 25
LotTTAstral Ini: 16+3d6 25

If I'm faster than the spirit, I'll just move back to my body and leave the astral, if not, I'll go Full Defense and then disengage.
Astral Defense (Full): 20d6t5 5

Rex had no desire for a fight - at least not a futile one against an army. As fast as possible he tracked back towards his body, trying to evade the elementals attacks.

"I knew something was going on... Now I only need to find an entrance."
Waywalker sent a message to Rex: "I'm going in. There's a black market in there. If you wish to come with me let me know. If you could boost my capacity to haggle, that would be great."

@Jack_Spade you are right, I utterly forgot the -8d for both rolls !

Spirit's teamwork on Perception: 4d6t5 2
Leader Spirit Perception: 6d6t5 1

So cleary, you passed - let me duct tape that narratively...

Rex was about to giving up and run when he felt his Kami focus to increase his astral's concealment.... and suddenly, the rushing spirit stops in mid course, gazing at the astral, just where Rex astral form is, looking ... confuse. After a few milliseconds, both spirit resume their patrolling, like if it was never

Then, and for the first time, Rex hears High Lord of the three Thunders whispers in his head : "Don't you ever doubt my power, mage.". Hidden for the astral patrol, Rex astral forms then move forward and enter the dread SOX. In front of him, patch of astral gets heavily distorded - he tries to avoid obviously damaged zone, while somehow getting closer to Metz...

@Jack_Trade all my apologies - we are back on track

Just as Waywalker sends his message to the mage, he remembers he can't communicate with him when he is in the astral. But he does now recalls what the mage asked him...

@Jack_Trade: here you are with an other duct taping trope : flashbacks :)

However, the decker get quickly interrupted, by a message arriving on his deck:

>>> However you are buddy, you are not a cop, so I'll assume you are here for business. Comes alone -and no drone either, at the front door. If you have no weapon, we'll open the door for you.

Instinctively, Rex increased the altitude within the zone. The higher he went the lesser he felt the sickening emanation of the blighted ground. Using the sun to navigate. The direct course was a bit over 100 km, but he covered roughly 5 km every 3 seconds. So it took him only about a minute to find Metz.

Now came the difficult part: Descending slowly, Rex aimed at the small river island that the photo had showed. With any luck he would find the Rigger's lair before the radiation turned him and the Kami toxic...

No problem, well saved ;)

The message on his deck was not a surprise. Waywalker replied: "Incoming, I'm here for business."
He recalled his drone in the van and left an order pre-imposted on his RCC: "If not receiving a ping from my deck, arm drones and shoot everything ablaze."
He closed the van and then went at the door, waiting.

Long time ago, while he was still learning magic, Rex met a shaman who made fun of the tendency of mage to rely on "calculation and prediction" -especially in the astral. The Shaman made a brief speech on how the magic is "always changing" and "expecting it to behave according to a fixed model" was, in short, a terrible idea. And so, the amerindian  warned him about putting too much stock in it.

Trusting more his japanense Sensei than the indian guy, Rex had simply shrugged at the warning. And it certainly vexes Rex to recognize today that the old guy was right. Indeed, even if his plan went smoothly, he actually reached the wasteland that is Metz in astral far more quickly than he had expected. Astral travelling is not an exact science - especially inside a horrid place such as the SOX.

Fortunately, years experience saved him and he did not plunged immediately, and by mistake, in the twisted and hazy astral mess sitting now just below him. The irradiation zone must only be a few kilometers above ground level, but he still requires him an intense concentration to see through it. After a little while however, he is pretty sure his assessing is indeed correct: below him, through a disgusting layers of fetid astral distortion stands whatever is left of the french city of Metz. And within its ruins, their target - Bernie.

The astral form of Rex takes a pause to gauge at the few kilometer of never ending shades and waves of astral between him and his target..

@Jack_Trade center of Metz is background 4 - while Rex is going to cross a layer at 1,2,3 and finally 4, I'm going to simplify - in a mean way ;) - and simply applies a -4d to your next tests.

You need one more bearing test to not get lost and gets to where you want - of course -4 applies to this test, and no bonuses (nothing is "obvious" in this mess). Also roll a Intuition (Astral Reaction) + Intuition, in case "something" wants to have the "drop on you". You can also try to move through the area discreetly, rolling an Logic (Astral Agility) + Sneaking, but this would then add -2 to any other tests. It is getting harder, but you are getting closer...

Also please feel free to add "flashback" where Rex explains to Haywire what kind of gears he is looking for (and why, if nothing else, for me to know what you expect out of such gear). This way, Haywire can start "shopping" - also please roll your Charisma + Negociation, this will be a teamwork roll for Haywire's own Availability test. (Rex did prepare him before he went Astral, so...)

In the meantime, Waywalker has reached the door - who suddenly opened, after, he suspects, a weapon scanner came back clean. This is certainly not making him feeling secure, but he takes comfort into the fact that his drones are ready to jump on a simple command from him. As in enters the room, the scene he just witness through his feeds has barely changed. He starts looking at the stands and the gear they offer, to see if he can already spot some stuff him and his partner may need. And maybe discussed a bit with whoever is around - he has no idea when Rex will show up, and they do need some intel anyway...

Rex was about to begin the final leg of his journey but stopped, blinking despite not actually having working eyelids in this form. He just had remembered something from his old life and quite distinctively at that. For a moment he feared that this was a false memory, generated by the twisted astral space of the SOX. But he knew with a brilliant clarity he hadn't felt before, that what he remembered had happened during university.
But as brilliant as this flash of insight burned in his mind, the rest of his memories stayed in shadows.

Yet, with renewed vigor, he went to face the dangers of the zone.
