To put things in perspective: There's a story about a friend of the family that showed up at a department store after working in her garden and not changing out of her work clothes, the staff ignored her completely. The next day, she showed up dressed what was normal for her, which is quite well. The staff fell over themselves to help her.
She politely pointed out that she could buy the store five times over and not give a damn about the cost, and that she had been in yesterday and ignored based on her appearance.
I got to do this once

After scraping and saving for several years, I had enough money in savings to buy my new car outright. So I went to the bank and got it out in cash

After visiting several car places in shirt and board shorts, was eventually got served by one new girl, and advised her I'd take the car.
She gave me all the dubious looks of:
And how would you like to finance that?Response:
Erm, well, do you take money? *drops bundles of cash tied with rubber bands*
The store was actually really pissed with me, as they had to spend time counting the cash and locking it up... apparently people don't pay in cash anymore....
But yes, appearances matter. In game, I have specific wardrobe packs for occasions... some armoured, most not. I do however, appear to be the only PC ion the group who spends money on non-Combat requirements.... damned combat monsters....
