if you run or play shadowrun, you eventually get one of these stories.
short version, an AI hired the shadowrunners to steal 3 things from 3 warehouses. these warehouses had magical sucurity from bug spirits. when meeting the johnson, they failed to do much research. a subcontracted NPC decker was hired, but he died (it was an AI hiding inside of a megacorp nexi), and after that they were too afraid to follow up. at the first of these warehouses, the runners had a somewhat..... poor plan. they penetrated the matrix-side security and arranged for the box they wanted to be shipped, then put a deposit on renting the right company van to load it in. the target in this case was a signal rating 7 upgrade with UCAS military markings on it. (the other 2 cases were a response 7 upgrade, and a good anthro drone body that looked like synthetic alphaware). they failed to find the on-site wired-only security.
the elf rigger? well.... he had on makeup to prevent computer/camera facial recognition. he was in the van alone, with the rest of the team nearby for support if needed. while waiting for the box to be loaded, he pulled out his hip flask(he was a mild alcoholic rigger), and offered a sip to the security guard. this made people suspicious, so they slapped an extra security RFID on the box, and had vtol drones shadow him.
when he deviated from the planned route by pulling into a mall parking lot, a security van with guards and mage was sent in. when they saw a group of people (the rest of the team) in the back of the van messing with the crate, they assumed the worst and engaged, first using burst fire to destroy the tires and prevent escape. the teams dwarf mage had spirit bane(fire), and was thus the primary target of the enemy fire elemental.
they managed to escape by stealing an 18-wheeler from a loading dock (it was a big crate), and deleted various facebook pictures of them from an idiot on top of the parking deck. because the rigger was seen by the facility they robbed, his home was hit by lonestar. guess where he told me he left his van and drones when i asked him 'are you sure?'. he almost quit the game because of that due to being too attached to his expensive equipment, but the face was able to help him get it back out of the lonestar impound lot.
when i gave him his sign, he was hiring out a blimp drone for banner adds as cover for his surveillance. it was a picture of his face in the bad makeup, as part of an add for a makeup company.
