There seem to be a number of AI characters being critiqued at the moment so I thought I’d throw mine into the mix while it’s all fresh – thoughts and comments very welcome…is there anything obvious I’ve missed?

<<Gossamer>> AI Hacker

I’ve made a couple of assumptions:  The MetaAide uses the Evo Orderly stats and I assume this is a humanoid drone despite what the Arsenal artwork suggests.  The drone is an advanced version of the Orderly and adds bodyguard and childcare duties to the standard medical assistance the Orderly gives.  Seems like there’d be a market for that…?!?

AIs run programs like Agents (ie using their own system rating for program caps) – I think that’s correct isn’t it???  Response is governed by the node they are in.  Is there a way of increasing their firewall above the base?  Hopefully that won’t be a problem as I’ve tried to make her as invisible on the matrix as I can…

AIs get the VR bonus that a hacker would get…this I’m less sure on as it seems like a base +2D to more or less everything, but on the other hand, without it I don’t see how they can compete with meat hackers (less IPs too!) which makes no sense to me!

As a drone body I considered taking another humanoid drone with mimic 3 to act as the “old person” that Gossamer is looking after…does this seem like a good idea?  Is the mimic skin alive and have some sort of astral signature?  Otherwise there’s little point I suppose.  I’d need to juggle some points around to afford it, mimic’s expensive!

Thanks!

The Orderly is supposed to be a humanoid drone. Errata correct that. It should have walker and two mechanical arms.

AIs run program like hot-sim hackers. The do have to expend matrix actions in order to use their programs. Response/Signal are governed by their current node (remember that you can hack a node from any other node within mutual signal range, though). Firewall is average of Charisma and Willpower. System is average of Logic and Intuition. All node stats improve if it's the AI's home node. Other than that, I don't see any reason why an AI couldn't run a Firewall like a program; it's just a software option.

AIs always act as though they are in Hot Sim (which, yes, means that they get +2 to all Matrix actions). They CAN make use of Simsense Accelerators on their inhabited nodes, however, for 4 IP, and Custom Interface for improved initiative. The big advantage AIs have are their higher home node system stats, and their intrinsic programs. Rootkit is pretty awesome too.

Mimic skin is alive, that's why you need nutrient packs for it. It has some astral signature, but not a strong one; it should be fairly obvious (threshold 1 assensing test) to see that something is off about a Mimic drone.

Critiques:
-You can afford to drop Charisma an additional 1 without losing anything important.
-I notice you have neither Disguise nor Con. You might have a hard time appearing to be human without either.
-You are paying for two home nodes. Node lifestyle costs are for home node only; you need to start paying upkeep on a second node if you transfer to it.
-You can replace Perception with a Clearsight autosoft.

As a note, you don't add you Dodge autosoft to you base Ranged defense. It only applies to full defense.

Other than that, looks good, though three addictions might engender a GM smite.

Unfortunately, AIs have a pathetically slim number of Negative Qualities to choose from, otherwise "human contact" could be changed to Poor Self Control - Compulsion.

The AI quality rules are pretty stupid all around (why can't they take Restricted Gear?). You might ask your Gm to houserule them, to allow for more variety.

Ah good, I knew they'd added walker mode and arms but not that it had been confirmed as humanoid, thanks.

But what are they running their programs on?  A hacker runs them on their 'link so AI's run them on whatever node they happen to be in (be that home node, a nearby link or a corp nexus)?  I'm thinking about response degredation for multiple progs etc...

+2 to all matrix actions includes actions when "jumped-in" doesn't it?  For an AI all actions are matrix actions?

True enough.  I don't want her to be a foolproof human (impossible anyway).  My take on the levels of mimic are that lvl 1 you pass as human at a glance up to 3 where you are physically indistinguishable.  I know that's not exactly what the rules say but a drone with mimic doesn't want to have to keep making disguise rolls.  It's a bit like my take on SIN ratings.  Lvl 4+ shouldn't need to make a roll at all unless it's being seriously interrogated...

-I have a derth of influence skills at the moment but once she gets used to human society she may want some, having a good cha can only help that process (although I guess an additional point of edge would be useful!)
-See note above about human appearance - I don't neccesarily want her to be able to pass for human at the moment (except at a glance) but it might be something she wants to pick up later
-I was only paying for the drone node, I've adjusted it for clarity
-But if I keep it as a skill I can still use it whilst loaded up with autosofts for shooting stuff!  I am assuming they use up program space on the drone node like any other prog?!?
-Doh, corrected that one, thanks

Heh, what can I say, she's clearly got an addictive personality :P  And, as has been pointed out, there are bugger all negative qualities for AIs that fit with my image of her so...

I've realised Sapper is cheaper and better than codeslinger so that netted me 5 points and I ditched an addiction.

Thanks for the assistance :)

AIs are a bit weird, degradation-wise. No matter what node they're on, they always use their System score (with bonus in home node) for program degradation thresholds, but the actual degradation affects the Response of the node they are inhabiting. It could be said that an AI runs the programs on themselves, meaning that the programs act sort of like an Agent's payload.

Yes, a jumped-in AI gets the Hot-Sim +2 to all drone actions, like a hot-sim rigger would.
